for a side that presses like we do, we seem to really struggle when sides return the compliment and press us high - don’t think the pitch helps at home.

it is what it is, the manager won’t be happy with us being that toothless - and we’ve got plenty of credit in the bank with how we’ve played this season, but man we were bad today!

If you think my heart took a battering today, wait until we see what Big Sam will do against us. He will put the press on and go route 1 because thats the only way to beat us with a poor team. He will be set up for set pieces and going the Ariel route with the biggest forwards he has

3points, a clean sheet against a very aerial team who had 12 corners!
No new injuries or yellow cards.
9 points plus GD ahead of 18th place.
    Happy Days <party>

Played well first half but fortunate their goal was chalked off. Second half we were poor but at least we defended against a barrage of set pieces.

Burnley are a boring team to watch though, relieved we don’t play that style of football. Klich, Harrison and Dallas were poor today, Phillips immense at the back, I was surprised Raphinha and Rodrigo both came off.

Beat a team who we really needed to and kept a clean sheet so overall I’m happy with that one.

Meslier-7. Clean sheet. Mixed bag. Couple of decent saves. Distribution more miss than hit. Came for every cross which is a good thing and looks to be something that he has been told to do. Flapped at a couple. Regardless of sky commentators he was backed in to at every opportunity which is a foul nowadays.

Struijk - 7. Might just be the centre half we need. Did the simple thing mostly. Won his headers and stood tall. Did nothing fancy.

Phillips - 8. Stood up to the physicality that Burnley bring. Organised, calm, read the game. Excellent performance at the heart of the back three.

Ayling - 8. Excellent again as the right CB of the back three. Stood strong in every department and assist for winning the penalty.

Dallas - 6. Worked his arse off as usual. Didn't really happen for him but didn't do alot wrong.

Alioski - 5. Excellent workrate but his performance was littered with errors throughout. Poor passes, heavy touches, wrong side defensively. Workrate was enough to recover most times but could have cost us.

Klich - 5. Stood in the Phillips role. He understands the role but is badly out of form. Another performance littered with uncharacteristical mistakes with passes, touches and decision making. Had to come off due to inability to disrupt wave upon wave of attack.

Rodrigo - 6. Undoubtedly one of our most talented players. Should have scored. Some great passing. Walks back too often to fit in to the system. For the first time I don't see it working out for him here unless something changes.

Harrison - 7. Put his usual shift in. Defensively very good. Stuck a couple of decent crosses in.

Raphinha - 6. First half was very promising. Should have scored. Never got involved in the second half and rightly replaced.

Bamford - 7. Played exceptionally in the first half. Won the penalty, scored the penalty, held the ball up well, closed down the defence. Think he went home at half time as he did none of the above in the second half. Scored the winning goal.

    Subs.

Hernandez - 6. Noticeably steadied the ship when he appeared alongside the other subs. The only one to create anything going forward in the last half hour. Still gave the ball away cheaply on occasion.

Shackleton - 6. Helped calm it down and kept the ball well. Didn't manage to contain Charlie Taylor though.

Poveda - 6. Tried (along with Shack) to stem the tide down that left side but failed. Some nice touches and intelligent runs. I'm just waiting for some kind of end product from him.

Nothing to write home about, but most importantly 3 pts which eases the pressure and stops it building.

Normally agree with your rankings Emu but think you are 2 points too high across the board. Only Phillips and ayling come out of today with any real credit, struijk was ok. Bamford held the ball up well first half, Raphinha had a couple of moments.

Thought everyone else was rank today, much as I’m delighted with 3 points.

This proves that to progress there needs to be at least 3 good signings in the Jan window

My thoughts on a few incidents today...

Firstly our penalty. What I saw was the keeper getting there first. For me not a penalty. Saying that he did have his studs up so probably would have been a free kick anywhere else on the pitch. I think its 50/50. Not sure why everyone (on the telly) thinks it's a stone waller.

The Burnley 'goal' that never was. For me it's not a penalty. I see two players going for the ball and whoever gets there first wins. Meslier gets his hands on the ball fair and square and the Burnley defender impedes him. Its nobody's fault. It's a bit like two players going for a ball in midfield. One gets there first and the other gets the man, it's a simple free kick. This ****e that the Burnley player has his eyes on the ball is hilarious as Meslier is also looking at the ball. Ref got alot wrong (including the Leeds penalty) but he got this one right. Meslier got there first and the Burnley fella stopped him from catching it cleanly by unintentionally obstructing him.

Referee was very poor, especially first half, for both sides. Happily we got the big decisions for a change.

From a Leeds perspective we were again awful today. The poor passing really let's us down. We must play the ball more simple. The fact we have Harrison, Alioski, Rodrigo, Raphinha, Klich, Bamford and Phillips all seeming to try and thread the ball through the eye of a needle for the perfect goal means we give the ball away too often. Shack came on and played the simple pass every time and he improved the ball retention. Maybe the balance is off with so many playmakers wanting to play the perfect ball everytime.

    Yep. Fair enough.

We were shocking at ball retention today. I marked the team up for the defensive 2nd half performance. It was much much sterner than we have looked all season. We really grafted as a team to grind out that result when clearly we were not up to standard going forward. I know it was frustrating to watch but largely we kept a very physical team at bay. If you had told me that Burnley were going to have that many crosses in to our box before todays game I would have expected us to lose at least 4 goals. Credit to the lads for sticking it out on a cold Yorkshire day in December for 3 points.

Could be important psychologically going forward that result.

Agree- made a similar point last week... Raphinha and Rodrigo in particular look for the perfect ball or little flick at the wrong time. This side builds play by pinging simple balls while the wide men charge forward... concede possession in that phase and we’re in trouble

Another game where Bamford never had one chance except for the penalty. So 100% strike rate today again and his average this season is 53% which is top top form. Last season he was 42% way behind Mitrovic who was on 55%, so he has improved a lot.

Raphinah must be the unluckiest player around as he should have scored 2 again, Harrison missed a sitter again so we should have been 4 up at half time and different game.

Klich cannot do Phillips so we are deffo players short when Llorente isnt playing because he is a top Cb and Dm missing yet again today and will be missing against WBA as he had another set back in training. Is he the new Roberts or Forshaw?

We really do need to field something like our best team and yet the pundits never mention how short we are on first team starters. Alioski is only good for a bench player, Dallas should be back at LB, Ayling is a Rb and we have 3 international CBs out

Don't agree at all, stone wall penalty, the Leeds one. Irrelevant if the keeper touched it he took Bamford out who could have still got the ball if not taken out.

Is anyone else worried about Meslier? Remember when he started against Arsenal in the cup last season and was brilliant. Distribution was awesome, but he cant kick the ball straight now, maybe because his defence cant play against a high press and keep passing it back to him so he hoofs it. He also passes it or throws it out when the opposition are pressing which again causes problems and long clearances he never finds a Leeds player now, so his distribution is Felix. Speaking of Felix he scares the crap out of me now as he flaps around too much, and has been at fault for some goals. His reaction saves are awesome though and he has stopped some certain goals. But now think we may need a keeper.

Phillips was head and shoulders MoM today and young Struijk really is very good too. Ayling again had a good game, but our defenders take the plaudits and our creative players didnt do it second half

I think we really struggle without Philips in the middle, look how we were against Leicester and Palace. I think Struijk was a major positive today, like someone said, he played easy balls but did ping a couple if I remember correctly.
I had a thought about Klich, his form has suffered since Rodrigo/Raphinha have come in to the team hasn't it? That could be a factor.
I do think he needs the freedom to drift about the pitch and maybe isn't able to do that with Rodrigo in the team.
I thought Charlie Taylor had a good game and Shacks was good when he came on so the Youth system is paying off.
Onwards and upwards it's 3 points. Some fans have to watch **** like that every week.

I'm not worried about Meslier. He's a young kid with a different defence in front of him every game. He's decisive and fearless coming out. I prefer that to a pussy that stays on his line.
He saves way more than he costs us which is more than we've had for a while

I thought Meslier had a great game. Agree that his distribution was particularly poor today, but another clean sheet in the PL against and industrial team of dangerous cluggers. A lot to be celebrated, as I don't remember him being bombarded so much for a clean sheet. I don't recall any flapping, personally, but had already noted that most of his clearances came with an open palm, or palms, rather than a punch or catch. It worked!

On a day that we won a game and when the heart settles down to a normalish beat again. You really have to look at what the reality is:
    • Palace are 2 points behind us
    • Arsenal are 3 points behind us
    • Brighton are 7 points behind at the mo but still playing.
    • Burnley are 7 points behind us but a game in hand.
    • Fulham are 9 points behind us
    • WBA are 13 points behind but have a game in hand.
    • Blunts are 18 points behind us
we only need 3 of these teams to finish behind us
