Is that 1 metre + or is it 2 metres. Social distancing as in you are ok if you are with people for less than 15 minutes (the threshold schools use for when teachers/class should isolate)?

Masks? As in snoods, or are we talking proper clinical fitting masks? Do we have to wear a different one each time? Do you have to wash your hands when taking it off? etc

The clarity of the message, it just isn't in place any longer.

Lockdown 1 was clear, and Lockdown 2 & 3 are far more open for conjecture and debate.

Well I and my family wear FFP2 masks which are good for a total of about 8 hours wearing. On returning home we remove the mask and then wash our hands before doing anything else. But Mrs Merkel didn’t tell us to do it - there are numerous sources of information online here (as I’m sure there are in the UK). All common sense really.

    From gov.uk

"In the context of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, a face covering is something which safely covers the nose and mouth. You can buy reusable or single-use face coverings. You may also use a scarf, bandana, religious garment or hand-made cloth covering but these must securely fit round the side of the face."

I don’t believe the WHO, or any other government worldwide, are recommending anything different. Problem is too many people not even following that simple instruction.

Afraid what we are seeing in the UK, with a lockdown, mandatory face coverings and social distancing isn't showing this is the case. The virus is spreading faster and most people are surely taking sensible precautions.

Just for context, this is what we were told last April on face coverings in the various German states and, to my knowledge, there is no update on this:

    https://www.dw.com/en/coronavirus-germanys-new-face-mask-regulations-explained/a-53260732

We had our 4th consecutive day of over 1000 Covid related deaths in Germany yesterday. This goes beyond governments and politics and is about each and every one of us taking responsibility not only for our own safety but for the safety of others. Avoid all unnecessary contact. Stay home and stay safe.

Yes they have what is called Kurzarbeit here, basically companies can send people home and they get 67% of their net salary paid by the state. Many companies (including mine) have something in between, so in my company many are on 80% working time (so effectively a 4 day week) but get 90% net salary as a minimum. Government here throwing plenty of money at this but there are shortcomings - especially in terms of digitalization. No doubt you’ve heard of the Robert Koch Institute who are reporting German’s numbers daily? They still get all their inputs from hospitals and clinics by FAX !!!!!!!

Doesn't surprise, here we have malfunctioning excel sheets that the gov work from!!

I was reading the other day that commuting in London is much higher than in the first lockdown, the fact people are mingling on transport is a massive issue and if the strain is more transmittable then its going to have even more of an impact.

I’m due back at work on the 18th but will maybe go into the office once or twice a week on the bike, the rest will be home office. I am lucky that my company hat the IT infrastructure to support that.

That last sentence is a bit harsh, no? My post was polite.

All the things I flagged were perfectly obvious examples. Why were schools safe before but not now. No hindsight, this is all common sense.

This is a virus, we've had them before throughout history.

Have a read of this - it might open your eyes. The synopsis being that the new mutation (discovered by British research centres which are the envy of the world BTW, but lets not dwell on that) of the Covid virus, being significantly more infectious than previously known variants, changes the risk assessment. Models predict that closing schools will now have such a positive effect on infection rates that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Guess your dig at me was fine then?

The 'mutation' has been known since October. Our PM and various cabinet members literally said schools were safe then unsafe over the space of 24h, a while after this 'new' strain was convieniently announced to cover for their xmas U-turn.

They still haven't sourced and distributed the laptops that were promised to the schools. It'd take me about a week to sort it out, they've had 10 months. Poor kids will suffer now because of their incompetence.

What a palaver. My son's youngsters went to England to spend Christmas with their mum. In order to get back, the young lad had to have a test in England (which cost £120). My son had to have a test here (which was free) so that he could pick them up from Portsmouth. Just had a call from my son saying they wouldn't let him on the boat unless he had an English test. They rang Caen port to double check and they insisted he had an English test. So he has been driving around trying to find somewhere to get a test. Eventually someone at the port told him he might be able to get a test in the morning with one of the haulage companies, which was no good as the ferry is booked for overnight tonight. Somehow he managed to find a haulage company who gave him a test tonight and he is now on the boat, thank goodness. All this with two young children. If either of the tests had been positive it doesn't bear thinking about. As well as not wanting the dreaded Covid, the disappointment, inconvenience and cost would have made it a pretty miserable price to pay. Next Christmas in France thank goodness

That would be Professor Azeem Majeed of Imperial College, home of Neil Ferguson who predicted half a million dead. That gives him very little credibility simply by association with that unscientific guesswork that is still being passed off as science. Strange that you are so keen to blame the government for changing advice every other day when they are listening to this type of clown through SAGE.

The reality is that the mixed messaging from SAGE up to and including the first lockdown is the reason for much of the ‘first wave’ death toll because they did not have any idea what they were doing. Back in March 2020, Patrick Vallance concluded that restricting travel would make no difference and Chris Whitty advised travellers to choose their destinations based on quality of local healthcare. Those two expert clowns have been on TV screens persistently for ten months. The ‘science’ was wrong right at the start. They treated Coronavirus like Influenza because that was all they had planned. The only nation in Europe that followed WHO advice at the start of the pandemic was the one that had the lowest death toll at that time: Greece.

It has gone from “all” hospitals to just “many” now. Nothing like mixed messaging and exaggeration. Keep backtracking and you will get to the facts eventually. You also need to go and look up the actual definition of the NHS being overwhelmed.

The Nightingale hospital in London was used and had a massive 19 patients in its 4,000 beds but why let facts get in the way of your argument? One of the few things you are consistent about: avoiding inconvenient facts.

Of course now they have loads of NHS workers off sick, some of them probably occupying some of the beds making some of the hospitals ‘full’. Clearly turning key workers into patients is the right way to go.
