But he said horrific decision which isn't true. I think it should have been offside but it's the law itself that is the issue.

You applied yourself like a referee to that then Tom. It’s clear that the package is fecked.

Everytime you defend the referees and quote the rules (and I understand why you do), you defend the system. The system is breaking

How on earth can anyone say he's not interfering with play. He's within a yard of him when Mings chests the ball.

If it was a correct decision, we would see strikers trying it all the time.

Why not goal hang and wait for a defender to take a bad touch all the time? It’s because 99/100 that gets given offside. They just decided not to give it this once.

I think we’ve found the perfect position for Shane. He can stand behind the defender (as per usual) in an offside position, then sneak up on him from behind, nick the ball off him, pass it to Che or Danny who puts it in the net. Perfect!

But not when the ball was played which is what the law says.

No. They followed the offside law by not giving it. You're looking for big club bias when it just isn't there.

So Mings should have just left it, let the ball run through to him and he’d have been offside?

Or just head it away. I'm sure he would have got a shout of "man on!" from his teammates. But yes if he had left it Rodri wouldn't have been able to get involved.

You realise it's open to interpretation so that's just your opinion, rather than fact?

So ...... the law is an ass ....... the defender is never going to think “oh there’s a man behind me, I’ll leave the ball and they’ll flag him offside”. He’ll go to play it and, if the “not offside” player is close enough to nick the ball, then it’s “no advantage” according to the rules? The rule must be changed - the law is an ass .....

There's not really a huge amount of interpretation in it no. He wasn't active when the ball was played on by City as he was about 15 yards away from Mings. No one can say he was interfering with play then. And Mings deliberately played the ball when he chested it down. And the law clearly states that Rodri is not offside from that moment on.

Yes they can, plenty are infact. If he wasn't in that position he wasn't in a position to get the ball.

You keep mentioning about deliberate touches but for some reason think that doesn't apply to crosses.

You won't bring him round Libby, he's defending his church. It would be like the Pope standing up and saying "You know all that stuff we told you about God...well it might not all be completely true"

Just my opinion, and clearly not the letter of the law based on what the refs are saying, but simply by jogging towards the player receiving the ball, Rodri was actively moving towards the ball from an offside position prior to Mings taking a touch.
Claiming he was too far away doesn’t work for me, because by the time the chest trap brought the ball to the turf, Rodri was close enough to nick the ball.
Players not being given offside, who then use their advanced position to closedown defenders trying to control difficult bouncing balls has always been a bugbear for me.
There is no advantage to the defending team having to hit a hurried pass as a result of being closed down by the previously offside player, leading to loss of possession or a goal against.
Maybe it’s time to consider a rugby union rule and give the defending team the right to claim the free kick if they think the position is precarious, much in the way rfu players can call for a “Mark” inside the 22 metre line. :emoticon-0105-wink:
That or rewrite the ****ing law so that it makes sense.

Sorry Tom, you are completely wrong on this one. there is a 'big club' bias and most fans outside the 'big club' bubble know this is a fact. How many times have we seen decisions go against the clubs with less clout than the big names? Many thousands of times and referees are far more reluctant to give a decision against these money clubs because of the perceived pressure from the media, managers, superstar players, fans and the Premier League itself.

Referees do their best not to damage 'the brand' and therefore all the teams like Saints struggle to get a fair playing field because of it. How often have Man Utd or Liverpool been given a dodgy penalty because of a dive or 50/50 foul and if that had been us we would have had the appeal waved away. It doesn't always happen, but it does happen and it happens far too regularly for it to be a coincidence. You can chirp on all you want about referees being fair, but I doubt many would agree with you. For as long as TV money is dictating the way the game is financed then the glory boys like the 'top 6' will always be given the edge.

People dig at VAR, but the issue is with the core rules themselves.

I thought lockdown would be boring/stressful/painful enough as it is for you guys without wasting your time trying to get tom to admit referees and the rules are wrong!

Head , reinforced ,concrete and wall are just a few words that come to mind...

I half agree with you, Tom....so just one bollock I guess <laugh> I think refs are honest and try to apply the rules equally, but are also human and can be affected by status of the player and club or by something that has happened before. None of this is deliberate or malevolent....just being a human being. There is no conspiracy going on IMO.
