Tough away day this one. 3pm kick off.
Draw will be a good result.
Grant McCann knows promotion-rivals Portsmouth will provide a “tough challenge” but says his players are ready to face it head on.

The table-topping Tigers are one point ahead of third-placed Pompey, who won the reverse fixture 2-0 at the KCOM a month ago, thanks to two own goals.

Hull City are unbeaten since that game, a run of five matches in league and cup, while Kenny Jackett’s men have kept six consecutive league clean sheets.

“It’ll be a tough challenge,” said McCann. “You saw the game a few weeks ago at the KCOM, two good teams going head-to-head.

“We felt we did OK in the game and were probably the better team, the team in the ascendancy.

“We didn’t test them too much in the game – they didn’t test us either. Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of the result on two set-plays, two own goals.

“They’re in a great place, Portsmouth, in terms of the way they’re performing at this present time.

“They haven’t conceded a goal for six games so it’s going to be a tough challenge for us, but we’ll look to meet it head on.

“We’re in a good place ourselves, given the last five results since the turn of the year. The boys are looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“From the turn of the year, we’ve had a tough run of fixtures – Charlton, Sunderland, Blackpool, Accrington, now Portsmouth.

“We’ve started it quite well and we’ll be looking to build on that.”

Asked what he wants his team to improve on from the last meeting, McCann said: “Be clinical, make sure we test their keeper more, make sure we defend set-plays better.

“We scored a couple of own goals but I think we’ve addressed that.

“We came up against a team in Accrington who are huge, with three or four players over 6’4”. The boys manfully defended their box excellently and threw their bodies on the line.

“We’re going to need the same again at Fratton Park because Portsmouth are dangerous at things like that.

“They’re an experienced team so it’s a big challenge, one we’re looking forward to.”

As the season reaches its halfway point, just three points separate the division’s top five teams.

McCann isn’t surprised by the league’s congested nature, highlighting the size and stature of a number of its clubs.

“It’s a very difficult division,” McCann commented.

“There are seven or eight ex-Premier League teams. When you think of it like that, it tells you there are some big teams in this division.

“It’s not easy. Every game has different challenges, every game is different.

“There are probably 12 teams with a realistic chance of promotion – maybe more.

“We’d love to go on a run and continue what we’ve done over the last five games and put ourselves in a more comfortable position. But we realise that’s not easy. It’s what everyone wants but it’s not easy.”

I fancy us in away games against decent sides at the moment – they come at us more, and Wilks etc get more space to do some damage as a result.

    2-1 City.

I still wake up in a sweat some nights from the 3-2 loss in our second season in the premier league. Clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. What a ****e appointment Dowie was, and one of the ugliest blokes in the world surely. Was a lot better in the goonies than as a manager that’s for sure.

Really tough game this one, they are on a good run, not letting goals in, I would be over the moon if we can keep a clean sheet. I think they are favourites to win this league, already beat us at kc however we want revenge and are good enough on our day.

Jonas Hanway was born in Portsmouth in 1712. He is remembered for being the first person in England to use an umbrella.

In 1917 Portsmouth was the first town in the country to open clinics for the free treatment of venereal disease.

The first centrefold to display full-frontal nudity in a magazine was Portsmouth-born Marilyn Cole, who also has the distinction of becoming the only British model to be Playboy’s Playmate of the Year.

Portsmouth is on the oldest surviving route map.

The nickname Pompey, originates from the nautical abbreviation of “Portsmouth Point” to the shorter “Po’m. P.” in ships logbooks.

Football’s first floodlit league game was played in Portsmouth.

The IBM building was the largest office building in the UK at the time it was built (1967).

The longest building in the world at the time was built in the dockyard in 1776. The Ropery was 1,095ft long.

Ayers Rock in Australia, was named after Sir Henry Ayers who was born in Portsea in 1821, the son of a dockyard worker, and who was the Premier of South Australia five times.

Portsmouth Harbour is home to the country’s biggest fruit handling port. It processes 100 per cent of the UK’s Jersey potatoes, 70 per cent of the UK’s bananas and 100 per cent of the UK’s Moroccan citrus fruits.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, compiled in the ninth century, states that in AD 501 ‘Port and his two sons Beida and Maegla came to Britain with two ships in the place which is called Portes mutha, and killed a young British man, a very noble man.’ It is the first known appearance of the name Portsmouth in a written source.

The first co-operative society in Britain was set up in Portsmouth in 1796 by dockyard workers fed up with being ripped off by tradesmen.

Portsmouth may have been the first place to have a clinic for venerial disease but I think Hull is the first place to have identified cases. Excavations on the old monastery near the River Hull revealed syphlitic scarring on some bones. Prior to that it was always thought that Columbus had imported VD from the Americas. Go Hull monks!!!!

Tough one .. they're playing well .. last performance suggests we may have turned the corner .. draw would be good .. but suspect we may come up short in this one .. hope I'm wrong

I seem to recall other blokes at work recalling how fit she was. Reading the broadsheets I couldn't possibly comment.

Charles Dickens was a local lad. Hell of a sweet left peg. Couldn't half write a ripping yarn. 'The Tale of Two Cities' could have been about last season's campaign.
