.... surely not. Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed today that the UK would be willing to host Euro 2020 this summer - if UEFA deems it necessary - while also announcing a Home Nations bid for the 2030 World Cup. https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/twelve-uk-stadiums-that-could-host-euro-2020-this-summer
They've tried to get out half a dozen times but it's financially difficult. They wanted the council to take it over but they refused. They tried to build on the Town Moor and it was turned down. If they want to move they'll have to pay for demolition and clearing the site before they hand it back to their landlords. So they're stuck there and it's crumbling ... ... it probably needs as much spending on it as Bob paid to build the SOL
It looks sad and dark mate. Don’t get me wrong a big part of that is on Ashley, the SOL, even under the joke previous owners, is cleaned externally regular, SJP is manky. Also, where we have backlit facia lights that have been updated recently, and several times over the years, they have signs for the stands that look like they were printed out on an early 2000’s printer, with ‘free to use’ fonts etc. He really does scrimp every penny he can on that club, they aren’t wrong on that side. Its funny though
I can understand (we all can) why The Stadium would be ahead of The Scrapyard (which has seemed to be in a state of disrepair for years, and now probably isn't even 100% safe), but Old Trafford, Ibrox, The Emirates and a few others that probably should be aren't on that list, either, mind The Etihad and 'Spurs stadiums taking precedence ahead of 2 of those above, but they should all be used, as should Celtic Park
Rumours are of concrete cancer in the Milburn Stand and problems with the roof over the Gallowgate and East stands, among other things. If they're right I'd say it'll be a helluva lot more than it cost to build the SoL to put right!
That's about the gist of it. The problem is that the girders expand and contract which causes small gaps. That happens everywhere including the SOL so I'm told. But the critical issue at SJP is that the wind comes over the lower stands and gets under the roofs of the bigger one's. That's a huge amount of stress especially if it's gusty and flexing the girders. Bowls, like ours, don't have that problem thankfully. This was the reason our stadium was 'half buried' to minimise the issue.
Aye, you don’t see on tv when they always pan out from the large, modern extension, they don’t show the smaller stand backed onto listed building with 70’s steel girders concrete around it that is ugly as **** and wouldn’t pass current day building regs. Its such a mismatch of a building, tearing down and restarting would genuinely be the best bet. As it’s on a main city centre access road though, the cost and logistics of that would be outrageous. Mond, let’s not lie about it, it remains a great venue that can generate great atmosphere, it’s just long past it’s best.
Rated the 5th best stadium experience in a 442 poll. Yours came 10th. Personally, I think ours should be top. City centre location, 150 pubs within half a mile
Perhaps, but I don't know . . . . an awful lot depends on freedom related to covid restrictions. If we're alright there wouldn't be an issue, but if not maybe none of the grounds, anywhere, would sell out
They would undoubtedly sell out. Chelsea, West Ham, Spurs, Arsenal get near full houses every week for league games. There will be a massive appetite for the Euros if we're all allowed out again for them.
When was the poll done 1992? To be fair the whole away day experience at Newcastle would rank high, great night out, easy women and likely an away win. Gonna rank high overall.
