In all seriousness, I think most of the cap doffers have passed on to that golden palace in the sky, and furthermore, a republican stance is perfectly acceptable so long as it is thought through and accepted that we could end up with a President Trump type ordering commoners to invade the Palace of Westminster.
Not a wholly unreasonable point of view, Cologne. Furthermore, the monarchy at the apex of the pyramid effectively holds up the class structure in the UK such as it is. Reform is needed, but I don't think Harry and Meghan's attacks, claiming they were affronted that they could not call their sprog a Prince will help much, and I have a feeling they will soon be shown to be the self-absorbed liars and fantasists they are. I concede the Tories are part of the problem here.Their view - if it was done in 1066, it's good enough to be done now!
I sat down to watch last night feeling quite sorry for them. If you look at the way the media has covered Meghan compared to how they covered Kate, the difference is shocking; However, as I listened, two things struck me... Firstly, I do find it rather insensitive, in the middle of a global and subsequent economic crisis, for two multi-millionaires to go on TV and talk about how hard life will be for them, and how difficult it will be now the state isn't going to pay for their security. The security provision is part of the deal when you work hard as a member of the Royal family. Why should they step away from that position and seek more privacy, but still be entitled to the privileges that come with that role. Secondly, if they really do just want to get on with their lives in peace, they should...the way to do that isn't to organise a 'tell all' interview with Oprah Winfrey...that stinks a bit of double standards to me. I have nothing against them, they have no affect or impact on my life, and I don't on theirs...I wish them well, but if you want to go and live your life, just do it.
Kate was given a pretty hard time by the press before she was engaged to William. She was called "Waitey Katey". Then after they were married and had infant children, she was called "The Duchess of Dolittle" because the press thought she should be out on more royal engagements. But the person who had it worst, was Princess Anne. The press were continually likening her in looks to a horse, which is not what you need when you're on the dating scene. Oh, neighhhh...! Sorry. She toughened it out, and respect in the press grew for her. I'm sure the same would have happened to Meghan if she's been a trooper but she's simply not that type, she and Harry are self obsessed, prima donnas.
Think you've hit the nail.on the head Goldy. The press paint these pictures as you describe above. Whether good, bad or ugly. It's all the press.
Certainly the press are a two edged sword, Bob, and you have to be strong enough to take the bad with the good. PS great to have you on this thread. Ok to call you RoyalBob from now on?
Trying to watch the game and at the same time being told all about Harry and Meghan...the line 'I don't care, just let them get on with their lives', is not being heard.
