Handball rule to be changed in the summer. Can't blame the ref, he applied the law correctly in the Fulham-Totts game. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/56291850
Also a proposed change to the offside rule. I think it might be going back to what is was a few years ago
Just read up on the Foden penalty incident. 100% penalty, not given because " the referee has not made a clear and obvious error ". So the Pukki goal against Spurs was " a clear and obvious error" ? How more ludicrous is this VAR interpretation going to get? And we are going to be on the receiving end of these (biased) interpretations next season.
It's another chance to smash the little clubs! The thing about cricket is that the technology can cause controversy, but if there is a hot spot on the bat everyone can see it. You also hear the 3rd umpire talking through the decision making on the TV so you understand if there isn't something clear.
Also, "Umpire's call" is a thing in cricket. An acceptance that the technology has limits is built into the system. VAR for offsides is limited by the frame rate of the cameras they use. Even if the cameras used could film at 1000 FPS, the margin of error still isn't insignificant with the type of calls being made.
In cricket the umpire makes a decision before going to hawkeye, so there is a fall back position in place. A much better implemented and controlled system than this abomination that is VAR.
They should not allow VAR to watch slow-motion playbacks. If the VAR can't see a definite offside in normal time, play on.
What about having 2 challenges to referee decisions and if you lose it if the decision is not overturned within 1 minute of the VAR ref starting a watch? That would make sure it isn't done frivolously.
Rather than trying to follow the cricket model, why not follow the rugby model. DRS works well in cricket, because it is a stop, start game, with plenty of time between deliveries etc. Football is too fast, and needs a different system ie look at rugby
Chris Wilder has left Sheffield United. After being 9th in PL last season they have plummeted to bottom of PL this season. Why has this happened? I assume that the side is pretty much the same as last season?
The interpretation of "clear and obvious error" needs defining. As Canary Spring it should be viewed at real time speed. On a side note, trolling through the list of 1st and U23 players on our books I was astounded to count that we have 21 players currently out on loan, and that does not include Soto and Sitti who have returned from their earlier loam spell.
I don't think injuries have helped, plus teams have figured them out a bit. Not to mention a complete lack of an attacking midfield to write home about. I think the other issue was transfer policy. It sounds like Wilder wanted to retain control of transfers, whilst the club want a Director of Football. They spent a net £56m last summer (£29m on strikers), £64m the season before (£34m on strikers) - and they still have Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick as their top scorers this season. Of those 5 striker signings, Burke has 2, McBurnie 1, Mousset 0, Brewster 0, and they've let Robinson spend the last 18 months out on loan. You can't perform that poorly in the transfer market when backed with cash, and expect the club to keep throwing money at you. Wilder's a good manager, this'll be the first time he's really lost a job in 18 years. I'm sure he'll be back in management soon, it'll be interesting to where he sees a project he's interested in. Probably an upper Championship club with a bit of patience.
Regarding VAR and offside, if the decision can't be made quickly and without reference to twenty different camera shots from a variety of angles, the advantage should go to the attacker. Sports administrators could do a lot to get rid of the unpopularity of VAR simply by making this change. But sports administrators being who they are, they won't.
