Southgate has his favourites and they are chosen no matter what.
Truly bizarre choice imho

 

The other way to look at it is that he has players that have demonstrated their worth to him in England matches.
It worked well for him when he went from the U21s to the main team.
I wouldn't have picked Dier either, though.

 

Different managers require/expect different things from players which is why some players look ****/good in some teams but much better/worse when they change clubs.

I wouldn't put it past Madrid to still activate the buy back clause in 2022 though, only to then put him straight up for sale (either directly back to us or elsewhere) and pocket a good £10m-£15m profit. If Reguilon has another season like this then his market value will be around £50m, to buy him back for £35m and sell him instantly is an easy way to make money.

I'm pretty sure they've actually done something like that before in the past with another player.
