Anyone watch "Finding Jack Charlton" last night? A very well made documentary and quite moving.

I'd forgotten what he achieved with Ireland. A Euros and two World Cups, beat England and Italy along the way. A great ride for the fans.

I deliberately didn’t watch it - 3 members of my wife’s family have suffered with various forms of dementia....

Imagine what he’d have achieved if he had been appointed England Manager?

He proved he could do it on the International stage <cheers>

I understand. My Father-In-Law had it, it's a saddening nightmare for all concerned.

England have a fine history of not appointing the right manager. They may have qualified for most tournaments but should have done so much better with the great players they've had over the years.

So you think England have always played to the full potential of the players they've had? Interesting. Euro 96 and Italia 90 (possibly Mexico 86) are the only tournaments I remember watching where they played well.

It was more a response to the bit you put in bold about England having history in not appointing the right manager. Most, if not all, managerial appointments at club or international level seem like a good idea when they are made.

There's a lot of very good international teams out there and, on balance, I would agree England haven't done as well as you would expect over the decades.

Well believe it or not I wasn't having a go. When I was really into football, when I was younger, I supported all the British sides in tournaments and I was always frustrated (yes really) by England's under achieving. That can only be down to the managerial appointments.

I'm not sure they underachieved that much - I just think they tend to always think they are much better than they really are - and that is why they fail so frequently. Due to media hype, they always go into a tournament with tons of pressure on them - and then when they don't win the tournament people say they underachieved. Already I'm seeing stuff online and on the radio where people are expecting them to win the Euros.

I'm talking about years ago, when they had really talented players. A different era really. I haven't taken any interest in the England national side for 20 odd years. Saying that they could still have done better without coaches like Sven.

I watched bits of the last World Cup and thought the overall standard of all the teams was poor. I found no joy watching it, especially with the modern approach to cheating and preening. The England team that reached the semis was also poor.

Definitely won’t take long at all <laugh>

I retired 7 years ago today - flew to Tampa the next day and stayed with friends (you’d know (of) the family Glam) who spend half the year there and half the year in Bryncoch.

By the second beer, I didn’t miss work at all ..... <cheers>

Weirdest time for retiring - especially over here! I retired last September. Planned on curling a few days a week - cancelled, planned on Florida for a few weeks - cancelled, planned on meeting up with ex colleagues once a week - cancelled, planned on Australia for a conference - cancelled. Have walked quite a bit thankfully the sun has shone often making the -10deg not so bad - just not what I thought it would be like as this crap hangs over everything you go to do - headed into another 28 day lockdown tomorrow!
