Is there anything else we can do Steven?Do you know any M.P's /Media workers?

There's a real chance for us to all unify here and do something worthwhile and memorable.

5 in 5 weeks is an absolute terrible statistic. Yet it’s not been pushed forward by the media as it doesn’t fit in with whatever agenda they’re trying to push.
    Sorry for your loss.

I did think they were looking at putting anti jump fencing either side the length of the bridge (similar to the bridge in Scarborough)? Maybe the gates are a more cost effective solution. Not that you can put a price on a life. It is such a tragedy. But something definitely needs doing.

I think the Grimsby MP Martin Vickers has been fairly active on this subject. A study was kicked off a year or so ago to look at improving safety with higher barriers being one of the options, but I don't know how that went or how it might have been affected by the 2020 lockdowns.

Regarding this petition, more than happy to sign but I'm wondering how effective gates can be. Couldn't someone just walk around them by the road? I think there's a drop from road height to footpath but if you're of a mind to jump off you might not see that as an obstacle.

Various options have been 'looked' at over the years, none seem to come to fruition / change. Technicall difficulties from memory where the impact on the aerodynamic / drag on the bridge in high winds and to a lesser degree the permanent weight increase. There are Samaratins numbers now on the approach on the bridge itself and I think bridge staff were trained in spotting signs, e.g. people walking up and down, looking over the edge etc. Also at the time introduction of local crisis services on both banks of the Humber and nationally. Though this was all probably 20 year's ago. Hopefully something changes with this.

I attended a speed awareness course about five years ago, and they said the investigation and inquest figure for a fatal road crash was upwards of a million quid.

    Done

I find it hard to understand why nothing has been done before now , also quite worrying
that nobody seems to agree on the actual figures for the number of people who
    have died there.

Some very interesting bits and the attitude of the bridge board is poor.
As hogan says there’s no will to do anything different. And that’s what’s needed
    Do something different

Humber Bridge footpaths closed indefinitely after 'recent incident'
Pedestrians and cyclists now banned from crossing
The footpaths on both sides of the Humber Bridge have been closed indefinitely.

The Humber Bridge Board announced the decision on Saturday afternoon on the back of an unspecified "recent incident" at the bridge.

It is not yet known when - or if - the pathways will be reopened

A spokesperson for the Humber Bridge Board said: “Due to a recent incident, we have taken the decision to close the footways on both sides of the Humber Bridge for an indefinite period.

"We appreciate this might cause some inconvenience, but we ask that pedestrians and cyclists respect the decision and avoid the Humber Bridge at the present time.”

The decision comes after multiple deaths at the Humber Bridge in the month of March.

Police were called in the early hours of Sunday, March 28, following reports that a teenage girl had tragically died at the bridge.

And only a few days earlier, another young person, Alex Walker, also died during an afternoon of four separate emergency incidents on and around the bridge on Thursday, March 25.

His girlfriend shared an emotional tribute to her boyfriend in the wake of his tragic death, saying he was the "kindest person she ever met".

A petition has since been launched calling for extra measures to help "secure" the Humber Bridge and prevent or significantly reduce the amount of suicide attempts there.

More than 7,000 people have added their signatures.

I’m very sorry for those troubled souls that saw the Bridge as the solution to their problems, and my heart goes out to their friends and families.

IMHO the easiest preventative strategy is having a 24 hour human presence on each walkway to spot and talk to people in distress and report to the emergency services and mental health agencies. It’s also probably cheaper than fixing the technical issues that prevent a simple cage or net of the paths.

I use the Bridge regularly for leisure (walk and bike) so selfishly I hope the indefinite closure doesn’t last too long. I’ll be able to get my fresh air and exercise elsewhere though, I don’t know how the bike commuters are going to manage. I suppose they’ll have to let them through on the road.
