To impose strong regulations attached to people’s accounts. It’s seems every day there is another footballer or celebrity abused in some form or another. Surely it can’t be difficult to impose some form of regulations to ensure if abuse happens the culprit can be identified and charged. It’s getting out of hand now. If I open a bank I need Id. Why can’t it be the same for social media? In this day and age why is this not possible? Im 41 year old so I’m NOT in touch with the real word of social media and such but I just can’t believe we are where we are? Anyone have any arguments either way? Freedom of speech does not allow for abuse!
It is possible, the SM platforms simply choose not to impose it. I think people should have the right anonymity on SM, but anonymity on the screen shouldn’t mean that they’re unidentifiable behind it. Actions have consequences and at the minute it’s far too easy for maggots to create accounts with a throw away email address or an unregistered sim and post vile racist abuse with impunity. There’s also plenty more they could do to stop abusive posts before they’re even published, and for those that slip the net, they should be removed within minutes. I’ve seen overtly racist posts last days without removal, and the accounts posting them still remaining active. It’s not good enough, and the platforms need to take responsibility or risk legislation that makes them publishers as opposed to just a ‘wall’ for others views, which is how they get away with it at the minute.
I've never seen a reason why you can't have a global ID card so that all of your activity can be tracked. Go online? Scan your card and proceed. Buy a car? Sure, where's your ID so I can check your points, identity and insurance in one go. Want to post racist abuse online? Go right ahead, just scan here so we can see who you are first. The pros of illegal behaviour monitoring far outweigh this abused notion of freedom of speech.
They do that in many places Norway you use your national ID for everything but your suggestion to take it even further because of some strong words is teetering on facism imo
I think it's a super difficult balance. More action is needed but requiring photographic ID to setup accounts etc is difficult, particularly when not everyone has these. You run a real risk of digital exclusion (particularly in poorer countries) if you take this approach. There's lots that needs to change and largely is, particularly on the use of safety technology to detect and take down content. However where it's tough is on what content you're taking down. Obviously that doesn't include what is clearly racist content but what is viewed as "harmful content" varies from country to country. But for these issues, you can't act in isolation. Ie what do you do if someone has posted content in Germany that is not deemed harmful there but is read by someone in the UK where it is?
Twitter is vile. It's full of complete arseholes who haven't eaten enough muesli and who watch porn all the time. I've reduced my usage of Twitter and only actively run the 5 accounts now.
That’s fair enough. But direct abuse lobbed at specific people that’s not the same is it. Different cultures do have different tolerances ok: but that doesn’t bend towards direct assault. When you post something on social media in general it may cause offence. But that’s not directly intentional. Posting something directly towards someone to cause offence. That’s a whole different meaning.
I agree: it’s the death of free speech not the definition. Some of the abuse I have seen lately is getting borderline legal abuse.
As with almost everything in life, the minority ruin it for everyone else. Probably the same destructive minority in all aspects of life.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There is no such thing as free speech. Never has been. It’s a concept which in reality has never existed. Speech has always come with “T & C’s”. All accounts on any form of media should be traceable to a specific person. Say what you want but then face up to the consequences.
If they were that bothered they'd come off. I'm not saying it's acceptable, but there's too many arseholes out there to solve the problem. There's laws on the street, but it doesn't stop people getting assaulted, abused, raped or killed. Sad reality...Good luck creating a world where nobody gets any **** online or in the real world.
Steve Bruce gets direct abuse and bullied everyday on all forms of social media. Oh I forgot, thats ok.
