Redbull reckon the differential problem cost them about 0.3 secs a lap, I can't quite remember when the problem was perceived but if it last 40 laps it cost them 12 secs, a very clear win margin. Merc have a lot of development they need to do if they want to be in contention this year.

If that's accurate, then Merc are a country mile off on Bahrain form.

That .3 of a second may have just murdered their tyres all the sooner though, so on absolute pace they may have lost that, but on managing a strat it may not have been that consequential.

Max really chugged through that set of tyres, suffering similar levels of deg in a handful of laps. Good representation of where a lot of Hamilton's skills are in managing the situation.

It was interesting to see, your comment that Verstappen may have worn his tyres out with greater speed may have some validity. Race number 2 is going to be interesting to see. 10 days and counting.

Not sure Merc can pull off that kind of strat again. RBR may just match Hamilton on strat, even if they risk losing track position for a little while. If RBR maintain their advantage, they may just walk this one. Going to be interesting to see what the differences look like at Imola.

And Perez will be in the mix too, reliability permitting. I am hoping Merc will have done a few tweaks. It is a very different circuit. Whatever the outcome, looking forward to it.

Same! And the Indycar season starts on that same day. So it's going to be a good day all around. Hopefully some good weather and some good food on the smoker. :)

He just doesn't look like the same bloke these days. Seems to have lost a lot of that spark he had. Even though the finger irritated the hell out of me, kinda miss the old Vettel.

Maybe he just needs to be able to change his helmet every race again and all will be good.

It's such a monster change from his Red Bull domination form. Doesn't seem even remotely close to that form any more.

I wonder if having kids and being married has spooked him. It's a cliché comment I know.

I wonder if it was just right place right time. I mean maybe the Red Bull of 2010 on was just perfect for his style. His driving seemed to go down hill from 2014 when the hybrid PU's came in.

His confidence is shot. I'd love to see him get a few good results and see what difference it makes. Bringing in Hulkenberg won't be helping any. He needs support, not pressure.

I suspect the team will be patient though. It makes no sense to bin off Perez and then give up on Seb after one race. They have already committed a lot in him.

Vettel took the defeats inflicted by Lewis badly. I believe It is a combination of confidence failure, car changes, injured pride, family. I remember the pain in Vettels eyes when Lewis won his 5 WDC firmly stating I am the generation champion, not you Vettel.
Vettel had capability in the earlier formulas, but I would not say he was as good as 4 WDCs, that was luck, right place, right time. He needs to accept his time is up, step out before it becomes an embarrassment. Beaten by Le Clerc, a rookie. Notably Stroll who is not WDC material embarrassed him in this seasons openner. Vettel has to step up to the challenge now, or step out.
He even seems to believe a fictional version of events. It is really sad to see, I doubt anyone extracts enjoyment from his fall.

If he can just cut out the silly mistakes and build some confidence, maybe he can have a decent season. Otherwise his reputation is going the way of Grosjean's.

If his driving style is so dependent on 2010-2014 aero, then it's on him that in 7 years he hasn't really adapted.

It's interesting that, whilst he's a 4 time WDC, I'm not sure I'd rate him any higher than any 2+ time WDC. Can anyone make a case for him being better than:
Hamilton, Schumacher, Fangio, Prost, Brabham, Stewart, Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Ascari, Hill, Clark, Fittipaldi, Hakkinen or Alonso?

It seems harsh to mention it now, but back in his pomp, I did always question his actual ability to race, or more say that we were yet to see him really have to race. And there have been many examples of when he does have to race, it doesn't quite work out for him.

Take a look at Vettel vs Webber in Turkey 2010, and despite RBR throwing Webber under the bus, that was all Vettel. He has been making similar errors since being back in the pack. So it's not really out of character.

Fast? Yes! Good in a battle? Maybe not.

It wasn't all Vettel, Webber made 3 defensive moves down that straight, all in reaction to what Seb behind him did, and was on a line that would force Vettel off the track when they finally made contact. A far better example would be CLC.
for me, it was spinning in the wet in Germany that killed his confidence, and he was never the same again.

In the Webber/Vettel mess, Vettel was trying to take the line before the move is cleanly completed, and he's been making similar mistakes over the past couple of years. The LeClerc incident being somewhat similar. Webber made the space tight, but Vettel always had room.

You don't win 4 world titles without talent, bur he's always seemed stronger leading from the front.
