One of the snags of keeping a dog is that normaly you expect to outlive them.

And no matter how many times you go through the loss, it never gets any easier.
So you have the sympathy of all of us who have been where you are now.

I gather that you still have at least one at home, though in my experience this is not as much help as others think it might be.

And I hope it's not insensitive of me to suggest you consider a replacement as soon as you can face it.
If it's to be another Cocker, get a different colour to Murphy, so that you aren't comparing all the time.
But if you have a puppy to look after, it helps.
And if you have children, it REALLY helps.

So sorry for your loss. Always hard to say goodbye. I had a Cocker Spaniel myself a long long time ago. He was named Elliott after Shaun Elliott. Beautiful, playful and gentle creature.

Sorry for your loss mate. I've been there myself twice, both had good, long happy lives, but God I was wrecked when both went. I still miss both of them, 10 and 26 years afterwards. But, as others say, keep remembering the good times, it'll help you get over the sadness. Take care mate

Gutted for you mate, know the feeling. Having dogs in your life is a real joy and I am convinced they love every minute of being in our lives.

I’ve had quite a few dogs and to be fair most were farm dogs when they went they went no big deal, but this bugger we have now if she died or anything happened to her I would be heartbroken she just makes you love her.

Sorry about that marra. Not sure pets are actually pets, more like a good pal who is always there for you. I got an abandoned cat called Mouse years ago and he was my best mate, ripped to bits when he died and vowed never to have another. Had two more abandoned cats since then, one for ten years and the other for eleven and they're both still going. I'll be the same when they pass, be ripped to bits and swear never to have another. And then I will as there will always be some little abandoned thing that could do with a good home.

Feel for you, I lost my springer when he was 14 many years ago and the hurt was that bad I haven't had another since.

So sorry to hear this mate. I'm sat on the sofa with my 6 year old beautiful boy right now and I'm welling up just thinking about when the time comes.

Theres nothing more pure than a dogs soul in my eyes the love you receive from them is unconditional they ask so little and give so much.

I know it's no comfort but you gave that dog the best life it could possibly have had and unfortunately nature is a cruel bitch and decides that our pets have a much shorter life expectancy than ourselves.

Keep strong mate and RIP Murphy

Thoughts are with you mate. I have a five year old sprocker, and he is part of the family.

We are the same mate, we had to let our little dog go (no idea of her breed I could see about 4 or 5 different in her where she was the little of cross breeds). We just can't see ourselves getting another. It hurts but also she was the best dog I could have hoped for and wouldn't want another in her place.

Some say it's only a dog...it's gut-wrenching m8. I prefer animals to humans tbh. No stronger loyal freind than a dog. Feel your loss.

We have 2 ex racing greyhounds. The twelve year old bitch has a tumour and kidney problems but medication seems to have stabilised her for now but a couple of weeks ago thought that was it but she has picked up and showing interest again. As usual when she goes we'll be gutted but then get another to keep the 5 year old lad company.
Commiserations on your loss, even though it happens a number of times during our life span, it never gets any easier.

Ours has a small lump on his testicle which we don’t think is cancerous but we have decided to get them chopped off anyway.

I’m dreading the day our black lab takes the old dirt nap so I can feel your pain mate. People who have dogs understand that they are more than just part of the family in so many ways. We moved to Australia 9 years ago and moved back here to UK 3 years later and we took him with us and brought him back...he was only 2 at the time when we went and we just couldn’t bare to not have him with us for our new life down under....he kept us sane so many times having him there with us. It’s ****ing **** that we get to have them for their whole lives and that it is so much shorter than ours but **** me this one has had a bloody good one and he has been worth every penny that has been spent on keeping him with us and in our family. I’m gonna be absolutely crushed when the time comes and I hate the fact that it is probably only 3-4 years away. Not sure it’s as easy as just getting another one as you’re always gonna draw comparisons but it’s something to focus on if nothing else to at least try and move on. Hope things get easier for you mate, I’m sure they will!
