I haven’t contested privacy and freedom apply to all aspects of life. What I have said is that those concepts are regularly compromised by individuals voluntarily such as when “joining” things where rules exist which are capable of impacting upon those concepts. I do not have the IT savvy to know what social media companies can or can’t do to stop or reduce the behaviour in issue and that would be the first avenue to explore but if they are not capable of significantly addressing the problem then I wouldn’t have a problem with freedoms and/or privacy being affected in order to have that significant impact. This would be because social media is not an essential in life and the extent of impingement on any “rights” would be known in advance. We do it, for example, when bank accounts are opened and they are in reality an essential for the vast majority so I can’t see why being on social media is anything more important so as to say some controls shouldn’t be in place if the problem can’t be solved otherwise. Bottom line for me is if someone is breaking the law then we should have means in place, if necessary, to ensure accountability for that person.
Censorship is the beginnings of a totalitarian state. That said, the UK already has it's fair share of self appointed left wing woke censors intent on cancelling anyone that doesn't agree with their warped view of the world. Open mob rule, with David Jason the latest to suffer there wrath. Be careful what you wish for, as you may be next.....
Then we are already on the way to that totalitarian state as we already have censorship. No reason why the same rules and punishments that exist and apply to other forms of media shouldn’t also apply to social media.
Thankfully I don't do the likes of Twitter and Facebook. Fair enough, punish people, but, the bullying mobs should also be held accountable.
I don’t twit or face either and totally agree if the bullying mobs break the law then they should be accountable as well. But, seriously, between you and me, keep taking your medication.
You sign up to a social media platform then there are rules. Don’t abide by the rules and you should be held accountable. Your sign up is you agreeing to said rules. Thus on sign up there should be a mechanism for way of traceability to adhere to said rules. It’s not nanny state and it’s not control over your human rights. But of course the social media entities don’t want the responsibility. And it’s not right to flippantly say “if you don’t like the turgid abuse then don’t use the platforms”. That’s just an abusers response to it suggesting they actively advocate the option to abuse other people.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/56949358 This is disgusting. There has to be change and now. Social media companies have to take responsibility. They have to start NOW!
Criminal charges. You shoild need a driving licence/ passport to verify a social media account to confirm identity. Linked to a person. That person trolls, abuses someone else one, ban and arrest them. Regulation is needed now.
What I can’t understand is how referring to a “them” as he or she can attract a storm of attention and “you can’t do that”, yet abuse and racism remains less checked. It’s weird.
@Geordieginola have you noticed on twitter that since of the "look at me" girls didn't last long away from twitter?
