Had a little search last night for the team sheet for that game. I was 11 then & obviously trying to recognise the players from the time, apart from the usual suspects, is difficult in a clip. Can see Curtis, Waddle, Tosh, Speedie, Robbie, Wyndham & Crudgington, I think. Is that Danny Bartley at left back & are Charlo and Callaghan on the pitch too?? Going to try a little harder when I get a mo.. Unless of course, some of you 'more senior' members of the board can help.. Fantastic to see the Swans fans going ballistic on good old fashioned terracing...
As one of the ‘more senior’ contingent on the Board, it looks like Crudgington Wyndham Speedie Leighton Phillips (good friend of mine) Danny Bartley Callaghan Robbie Tosh Waddle Curt Charlo (wearing 12?) If Charlo was the sub, then is the other player Tommy Smith?
Been meaning to reply, distracted by daughter's birthday at the time.. Leighton Phillips wasn't on my radar there Taff. Although of course I certainly remember him as another one of our Welsh internationals around the time. Yeah thought it was a young Charlo (12). Tommy Smith it could be. Was at the club around the period..
That's fantastic, think you commented earlier that you were friends of Leighton. Sounds like your Dad must've been a decent player too..
He had a few games for the Swans reserve team in 1948/48 season - he made his debut when he was 16 and still in Neath Grammar.
Well I didn't realise he had been on their books. Good on him. Swansea Town, as they were then & latterly City, must have always had a place in his heart..
Here’s the letter from Billy McCandless to the Scout who spotted my father inviting him to make his debut for the Reserves - just over 2 months before my Dad’s 17th birthday. Our beloved former Chairman came to my Dad’s funeral.
