EU regulator, the EMA, reviewing Johnson and Johnson vaccine due to possible links with ‘fatal blood clots’ in the US and in trials.

I may have mentioned that this was almost inevitable earlier. Sputnik vaccine likely to be the same.

Got my call this afternoon for the second AZ jab. I would have sworn the GP receptionist sounded relieved when I accepted without hesitation, repetition or deviation, Not even a series of what if questions or procrastination. Just as well. I am starting a 7 day case in a week's time and had visions of having to ask for a 2 hour adjournment if they offered it to me then.

By the name, I assume that one is Chinese. If so do we know which live animal market it was developed in. And from which live animals. Honestly I can't see many takers for it unless the national procurement guys have ****ed up or politicians like Macron have wreaked even more havoc with the confidence of the proletariat.

I don’t know what technology that and the other Chinese one use, but I’m guessing that it will be similar to AZ because it’s a cheaper approach (not necessarily worse, just cheaper). I think the flu vaccine is also made using the same approach, but as it’s only given to old folk we haven’t noticed that it’s as deadly and likely as, let’s say, being attacked by a swarm of flying ants, in December in Helsinki.

I think I read somewhere it has an older similar technology to AZ, Johnson and Sputnik rather than the new Pfiser and Moderna. But yes there is that one advantage of Helsinki in December.

Extent of mental health crisis in England at ‘terrifying’ level
Psychiatrists warn of overrun NHS after record number of children and adults sought help amid pandemic

    • NHS help last year for problems such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders, or because they ended up in a mental health crisis.

England is “in the grip of a mental health crisis” because of the Covid pandemic, with under-18s suffering the most, psychiatrists are to warn on Friday.

Record numbers of children and adults sought NHS help last year for problems such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders, or because they ended up in a mental health crisis.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has highlighted the sharp rise in mental ill health, that began after the first lockdown in March 2020, in an analysis of NHS and Office for National Statistics data. The college said NHS services were struggling to cope with the demand.

Adrian James, the college’s president, said: “The extent of the mental health crisis is terrifying, but it will likely get a lot worse before it gets better. Services are at a very real risk of being overrun by the sheer volume of people needing help.”

People under the age of 18 have been particularly badly affected, and delays in accessing care are worsening.

The analysis by the college found that:

In 2020, between April and December, 372,438 under-18s were referred for mental health help, the most recorded, and 28% more than the 292,212 referred in the same period in 2019.

Under-18s received 3.58m sessions of treatment in those nine months, 20% up on the year before.

The number of children and young people needing emergency care because they were in a mental health crisis rose 20% to 18,269.

In addition, more under-18s were left waiting for either routine or urgent care for an eating disorder.

Bernadka Dubicka, chair of the college’s child and adolescent faculty, blamed the situation on “the devastating effect that school closures, disrupted friendships and the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, have had on the mental health of children and young people”.

Adult mental health also fared very badly during the pandemic, James said. Until March 2020 about one in 10 adults in England suffered from moderate to severe depression. But that had doubled to almost one in five by last June. Record numbers reported feeling lonely.

And while the number of adults referred for help from April to December 2020 was slightly down on the year before, the number of treatment sessions they had rose from 15.8m to 17.5m.

During that period the highest number of adults ever had to be referred for urgent help because they were in a mental health crisis – 159,347, a level 2.2% up on the same period in 2019.

Andy Bell, deputy chief executive of the Centre for Mental Health thinktank, said: “There is a rising tide of poor mental health resulting from people’s traumatic experiences of the virus itself, of isolation and exposure to abuse, of loss and bereavement, and of financial insecurity and job loss.”

About 10 million people will need help with mental ill health relating to the pandemic, including 1.5 million children, although two-thirds were already struggling before Covid-19 hit, Bell added.

Miriam Deakin, director of policy and strategy at NHS Providers, which represents NHS trusts, said: “While mental health leaders have told us it is difficult to evidence the extent and drivers of the current pressures, a host of factors related to lockdown and the pandemic, including rising pressure on individuals and families and reduced social support, are key factors.”

Nadine Dorries, the mental health minister, said: “I am acutely aware of how difficult this pandemic has been for many, especially children and young people, and I remain absolutely committed to supporting the mental wellbeing of everyone.”

Ministers had provided an extra £2.3bn this year to expand mental health care, and last month unveiled a mental health recovery action plan to help the NHS cope with the surge in demand, especially from young people and health workers, Dorries added.

So Johnson and Johnson is being investigated for blood clots too. Good to see that 2 of the 4 vaccines approved in Canada are possibly going to do me in.

I have other issues with J & J - I understand of the four (approved here) it has a lower efficacy and of the four it is the only one reporting that less than 100% of the recipients are safe from hospitalizations/death.

My mate's daughter's boyfriend will be a pall bearer for the Prince's funeral. He's in the Intelligence Corp and has been on stand-by and has been rehearsing the role of carrying the coffin since The Duke went into hospital. Best undressed uniform and polished buttons in order.

Chinese official says local vaccines 'don't have high protection rates'

image captionIf you want a visa to China, you'll need a Chinese jab
China's top disease control official has said the efficacy of the country's Covid vaccines is low, in a rare admission of weakness.

In a press conference, Gao Fu added that China was considering mixing vaccines as a way of boosting efficacy.

China has developed four different vaccines approved for public use, though some trials abroad had suggested efficacy as low as 50%.

Mr Gao later said his comments had been misinterpreted.

More than 100 million people in China have received at least one shot of the vaccine.

Beijing insists the jabs are effective and said it will grant visas only to foreigners with a Chinese shot.

    What did Mr Fu say?
Gao Fu, head of the Chinese Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, on Saturday said at a conference the current vaccines "don't have very high rates of protection".

He suggested that the China was considering mixing Covid-19 vaccines, as a way of boosting efficacy.

Mr Gao explained that steps to "optimise" the vaccine process could include changing the number of doses and the length of time. He also suggested combining different vaccines for the immunization process.

But he later appeared to backtrack on his comments, telling state media Global Times that "protection rates of all vaccines in the world are sometimes high, and sometimes low".

"How to improve their efficacy is a question that needs to be considered by scientists around the world," he told the paper.

He added that his earlier admission that Chinese vaccines had a low protection rate were a "complete misunderstanding".

Mr Gao's original and later comments have been largely unreported by Chinese media.

His original comments however, attracted some criticism on social media site Weibo, with commenters suggesting that he should "stop talking".

What do we know about Chinese vaccines?
With little data released internationally, the effectiveness of the various Chinese vaccines has long been uncertain.

China's Sinovac vaccine for instance has shown in trials in Brazil to be only 50.4% effective, barely over the 50% threshold needed for regulatory approval by the World Health Organisation.

Interim results from late-stage trials in Turkey and Indonesia however, have suggested the Sinovac shot to be between 91% and 65% effective.

Western vaccines like the ones by BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca all have an efficiency rate of around 90% or higher.

media captionWhat do we know about the Chinese vaccines?
How are they different from other vaccines?
China's vaccines though differ significantly from some vaccines, especially those developed by Pfizer and Moderna.

Developed in a more traditional way, they are so-called inactivated vaccines which means they use killed viral particles to expose the immune system to the virus without risking a serious disease response.

By comparison, the BioNtech/Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are mRNA vaccines. This means part of the coronavirus' genetic code is injected into the body, training the immune system how to respond.

The UK's AstraZeneca vaccine is yet another type of vaccine where a version of a common cold virus from chimpanzees is modified to contain genetic material shared by the coronavirus. Once injected, it teaches the immune system how to fight the real virus.

One significant advantage of the Chinese vaccines is that it can be stored in standard refrigerators at 2-8 degrees Celsius. Moderna's vaccine needs to be stored at -20C and Pfizer's vaccine at -70C.

China is offering its vaccines around the world and has already shipped millions to countries from Indonesia, Turkey to Paraguay and Brazil.
