I bought a set of clippers 20 odd years ago, haven't paid for a haircut since. Mrs Jab sits me in front of football focus Palm beer to hand when she decides my hair resembles demented velcro. I did have a big curly mop back in the day, not keen on the grey equivalent.

Rumours that the Chinese vaccine isn't that good :( Chinese scientist let the cat out of the bag, then rapidly retracted the statement.....the usual way it works there. If true, bad news as we need all the vaccines the world can get.

Yes indeed Fran with full support for Covax. Without a coordinated worldwide vaccination program it's going to be a rollercoaster of mutation surges and lockdowns. https://www.who.int/initiatives/act-accelerator/covax. This organisation also involved with covid along with their other programmes. https://www.gavi.org/our-alliance/about

Here is a link to that story reported on Sky News, no mention of his retracting the statement on this report though

Everyone in Wandsworth and Lambeth have been asked to go for a PCR test as there's a cluster of the South African variant here. Now, were I part of said council, I would have suggested popping something in everyone's letterbox to that effect. Sadly, they seem to be relying on people reading that particular piece of news.

Still, been in for a swab up my schnoz this morning.

I'm reading about a breathalyser style CV tester developed in Indonesia.

    Good morning from Jakarta,

In today's headline, we have a story on GeNose, a coronavirus breathalyzer invented by Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

The is getting more popular because it is cheaper and offers faster results than the gold standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test but doubts still linger over its accuracy because of a lack of transparency in its development.

More info here re the Indonesian model.
    https://theconversation.com/indones...lyser-sensitivity-comparable-to-rt-pcr-155497
This from wiki about worldwide efforts
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus_breathalyzer

It'll be good if a fast, reliable, accurate and cheap testing methord can be developed. Used worldwide along with the Covax program it would make international travel safe in the long run.

I was shocked by the account which was suggestive that one bloke infected 40 people and a possible 30 others. some of those people infected where in a care home and the BBC news said that they had Covid despite having the jab. However, the article did not state whether or not the symptoms were mild.

No real surprises about the Chinese vaccine is the reports are true. It is a shame that so many of the poorer countries appear to have relied on this. If it was not for the secrecy in China, you wonder if the pandemic might not have been contained more effectively to begin with.

No no no. Have you never read this page? China are totally blameless in this and the disease was imported to them from Narnia in frozen meat. They are not a secretive nation with terrible human and animal rights issues.

Those strawmen are really taking a beating. Find me a single person who has said anything nice about the Chinese regime in the 382 pages of this thread. There is also a small irony in suggesting that China should have been capable of stopping the disease in its tracks while simultaneously arguing that the UK and other countries should largely give up on attempts at disease suppression and just let the virus take its course.

The initial Chinese response was, typically, secretive and less than cooperative with the outside world. It's also unlikely that it mattered; while weeks too late, the Chinese lifted the veil on the disease well in advance of it arriving in force in other countries, yet the response of those countries was so lackadaisical that I cannot imagine that it made much difference. An extra 2-3 weeks to dither and pat ourselves on the back about how it couldn't possibly happen here, when well over a month passed between the point where the disease was identified in other countries before any government in Europe or North America took even the slightest action? Probably not a difference-maker.

Oh so an extra two to three weeks unlikely to make a difference but you wanted us shut down two to three weeks quicker. Probably not a difference maker. Or were they honest with the scale of death and destruction. Probably not a difference maker. Or was the whole thing hushed up longer than we know? Probably not a difference maker. You have totally absolved China several times from blame here where I would say China are a nasty dictatorship which put its international reputation above lives globally. What other nations did or didn't do does not alter what China did. Sometimes, Schad, you rely totally on your sledgehammer logic and then you do this and jump to defend the indefensible on an 'unlikely that it mattered' basis.

China are horrendous and you were quite happy to accept the disease came from frozen meat. I can go back and quote you but you know you said it and I don't fancy watching you bore me with an explanation as to why it really did come from meat this disease nobody had seen anywhere before.

Can you quote me on where I have said give up on disease suppression? I have repeatedly agreed it is necessary in some form but that I think there are other methods of virus suppression. The irony of strawmanning me but claiming I am constructing strawmen is ludicrous.

Just admit China are at least partly responsibly for this outbreak and be honest.

The disease started in a country that:

    Treats people like crap.
Is immensely corrupt beyond any Western society.
Has no idea of caring for animals.
Puts its image above the lives of millions.
Allows a largely unregulated wet market system to exist.

But because some people cannot understand that the nation China is different to people of a Chinese origin we apparently shouldn't blame them.

Absolutely: three weeks of action would make a huge difference. Three weeks of the complete inaction that we saw in January wouldn't make a difference.

Go ahead, try and quote me. Because this never happened. The disease almost certainly came from a wet market, not frozen meat.

What are these other methods of virus suppression?

No one disagrees that the Chinese regime is awful. But there's a difference between that and suggesting that, once the virus had mutated to allow animal-to-person and person-to-person transmission, they were ever likely to stop it from reaching pandemic levels. Not without concerted, worldwide action to prevent transmission, something that simply didn't happen.

Like, seriously, go back to the start of this thread. The UK government wouldn't shut down Cheltenham, in mid-March, when parts of Europe were already in full-blown crisis and COVID had reached dozens of countries. Would they have sprung into action in late December if they'd known then, rather than mid-January? I wish that were the case, but there's really no evidence to suggest it.

    I said:
And the foregrounding of the "China imported it in frozen meat" angle was nothing to do with Chinese pressure at all. Did you watch the press conference?

    You replied:
    Not necessarily imported, but yeah.

Not necessarily now means obviously not, right? Because only a complete fool would believe that nonsense. I will precursor every comment from now on with 'not necessarily' and it can mean whatever I want in retrospect.

Also you are obsessed with displacing blame. This whole it wouldn't have mattered is nonsense. You are basing the level of blame to place on China on the ineptitude of the UK government. The level of blame on China cannot be dependent on the subsequent actions of other nations. If I shoot someone, someone else may also later be culpable for part of it but that does not mitigate my culpability.
