Last home game of the season. Unfortunately we can’t show our appreciation to a truly remarkable season. Are many going to go to the kcom and clap the lads coming in or going out? Huge police presence I imagine !!

The name Wigan has been dated to at least the 7th century and probably originally meant a "village" or "settlement". The name is Celtic, corresponding to the Old WelshUuicant. The name of the town has been recorded variously as Wigan in 1199, Wygayn in 1240, and Wygan in numerous historical documents.

It is renowned for transvestites,as most have a wigan address.

Birth place of Heinz baked beans, Pataks Indian foods, Potters herbal remedies and Uncle Joe's Mint Balls.

Thomas Beecham first manufactured his famous pills in Wigan. Marks and Spencer was born in Wigan when Michael Marks joined forces with Thomas Spencer in 1894.

As a sort of Hull connection, the folk-rockers the Tansads are from Wigan.

George Formby Senior first named it Wigan Pier.

Wigan's war memorial was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed red telephone boxes.

During its heyday, the town featured at least 1,000 coal pit shafts.

Wigan Borough has roughly the same population as Iceland.

Wigan has more pie shops per square mile than any other town in the UK.

The World Pie Eating Championships are held in Wigan every year and contestants from all over compete to eat a meat and potato pie in the fastest possible time. The current record is 38 seconds.

The 19th Century Coal-Owner, Lord Crawford of Balcarres had dinner services made from the unusually hard and clean 'cannel' coal found in his Wigan seams. He would amaze his guests by ceremonially burning their plates on an open fire after the meal.

Someone's been trying to arrange to get loads of fans down a the KCOM at 4.45 tomorrow, but it looks like the admins on all the Facebook groups are deleting his posts (probably at the request of the club).

If Patty goes, it might well be the first time he's been to the KCOM.

    We'll lose 1-2 sadly

Not to worry though. Lincoln will beat PBoro 0-4 so that will be it. Up as Champions with a game in hand

A telling of the origin of what really was 'Wigan Pier' goes that in 1891, an excursion train to Southport got delayed on the outskirts of Wigan not long after leaving Wallgate Station. At that time a long wooden gantry or trestle carried a mineral line from Lamb and Moore's Newtown Colliery on Scot Lane, to their Meadows Colliery in Frog Lane (where the Council refuse centre is now). This gantry was quite a structure, as it had to span the Douglas valley, crossing the river, the canal and the main rail line to Southport. As the delayed train waited for the signals to change, one of the travellers remarked "where the b... hell are we?" and the reply became the basis for the immortal joke about Wigan's Pier. George Formby, Sr. perpetuated the joke around the turn of the century in the music halls in Wigan, adding that when he passed the Pier he noticed the tide was in (referring to the constant flooding in the low-lying area).

Not the George Formby who sang about leaning on lampposts and cleaning windows though.

I always thought Formby was killed crossing the road by a horse and cart. I could be wrong. Somebody was.

    Hull City 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Had this been played within a few weeks of the away game, I'd have reckoned that we'd thump them again. As it is their form and performances have improved and they're almost safe, but not quite, so I'm going for a disappointing 2-1 defeat as the effects of celebrating for the last week take their toll on our players
