Diallo isn’t a first-teamer though. It’s a close-run thing overall. Maybe 5 or 6 but it’s hardly clear cut. I’d say about the same. Plus we’ve got Ings, who is better than any Newcastle player.

I'd say the most important signings (for the 11, not the squad) are at left back and winger. But, it feels like we need more of an overhaul than that, as we collapse far too easily if all the players aren't bang at it.

Obvisouly if one of Vest or Bednarek goes, then we need a new CB too.

And if Ings goes, we need a striker, but we also need to consider that Adams looks half the player when he's not playing with Ings. So losing Ings would impact both striker positions.

    McCarthy/FF
    KWP, Vestergaard, Salisu, New signing
    Armstrong, JWP, Romeu, New signing
    Ings, Adams

Not sure we can hope for much better considering our financial state. It leaves these guys to make up the places on the bench:
McCarthy/FF, Bednarek, Stephens, new LB, new RB, Diallo, Tella and Walcott. I think we should be moving on Redmond, Djenepo, Obafemi, probably Nlundulu and maybe Smallbone, although that may be a bit harsh.

We then need to replace those who go. Problem is, I'm not sure we have the money to do everything we need, and a club like us can't really attract or afford great backups.

Don't forget Lemina, Hoedt and likely Elyounoussi also need to be shipped out again.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Saints went with Elyounoussi as the new winger we want. Walcott/Tella/Djenepo/Ely as the wide options

It would be stupid to let him go now.

    He isn't good enough. He's a Championship-level player.

He's 22. Far too early to write him off.

Usually I'd agree with you. But I just don't see it with Djenepo. He's got a trick on him for sure, but that's about it. He is an opportunistic player, rather than a game-reading through-ball Tadic-type. In the Premier League that just doesn't cut it, save for maybe two or three games a season against low-quality full-backs.

And so he'll be our Player of the Season next year <laugh>

If the rumours linking us to Danjuma are true, we could easily throw in Djenepo as part of the deal. Could be attractive for both clubs, and Djenepo himself.

I appreciate Djenepo is young and may improve with time but, like Redmond, he’s a wide player who isn’t up to it.

We can’t really afford to have underperforming wingers (or number 10s or whatever you want to call them) in our system. And we don’t really have the time to wait and see if he does turn out good.

Have you anything, other than his first goal vs Sheffield, that gives you an confidence that he will develop into anything like a Premiership player?

First of all, his first goal was against Brighton when he curled it into the top corner from 20 yards. Also, his assist for Danny's goal against Watford last season. So far it's only been flashes but I still think he can be a PL player.

Agreed, none of our four wide players (Walcott, Redders, Djenepo or Mini Minor) have shown any consistent form, we are obvious obligated to Walcott, Mini Minor hopefully going back to Liverpool and the other two left, well let’s hope we get better players in and/or move them on

Sign another 16 wide players giving us 20 in total. 4 decent games each* should see us through the season. Then the only difficulty for Ralph will selecting which two are going to be good for any given match.

*Based on the 1 in 10 Worldie Redmond/ Ordinary Redmond ratio

If Ralph fills the subs bench with as many of 20 wide players as will fit on it (one of them could be rush goalie, if needed), this will give Ralph the maximum flexibility. <whistle><whistle>

Another point on Djenepo is that he is constantly picking up little injuries which prevents him from ever having the chance to develop and hit form. If he can have an injury free season I think he may well be a useful player for us as he had a few good moments aged just 21 & 22 in the premier league which isn't easy.
