I had a feeling he might go with 4 at the back and 2 sitting midfielders with Maguire out. If Maguire does come back after 2 games, then he may well change to 3 at the back, with Stones/Maguire/Walker.

 

I can understand why he doesn't start with Grealish. He's a great player but he does slow the game down, he hangs onto the ball until the very last second (which is why he gets fouled so much).

I suspect the reason he's got Sterling in is he really wants to attack Croatia at pace, with the majority of their defence over 30, and using Phillips and Rice to help protect the back four.

I do think we're suffering at the moment with our fans expecting us to go out and attack as we have such good players in that area. Just qualifying from the group is fine by me at this stage and then let's see how we go.

 

Grealish has been outstanding all season

Just walking the grandkids to kingswood shops and a load of lads got off the bus heading for Tribal singing “ it’s coming home.” I got all emotional, goosebumps all over lol. Kids wanted to know what they were singing, difficult to explain to a 5 and 6 year old but I tried.

Hoped to see Grealish play to drive forward and let Kane do what he should be doing and not dropping into midfield to collect the ball.
Foden/Mount are both forward thinking so cramming all 3 in would be difficult.

Philips will get overrun in midfield and Mings doesn't convince me, seems to have to do a lot of unnecessary last ditch defending.

Croatia strong down their left going forward but less so defensively, so Walker is a good option as will be doing a lot of work at both ends and might need his pace to get up and down the pitch.

Sterling and Trippier must have photos of Southgate with escorts or something if that tweet is true. Trippier’s good but he shouldn’t be getting ahead of two in-form left-backs in their natural position. Sterling is below Sancho, Rashford, Foden and Grealish in the pecking order on the wings for me. No way he starts in that team ahead of them.

Not a Mings fan. Always seems clumsy. Croatia might fancy getting at him. Do like our threat up front as well. Can see defensive midfielders to win the ball back and protect the back 4. Could be a few goals
