No one's really sure. It depends whether you subscribe to the Out-of-Africa hypothesis or the multi-regional hypothesis. Both have their merits.
There are very few ways for spectators to demonstrate their feelings whether it's sport, music, theatre or any other form of entertainment. Booing is non violent, ambiguous and basically harmless ... ... it lasts a few seconds, no idea why people get so upset tbh.
Whereas people are 100% sure if they believe themselves to be English, Scottish, Irish or whatever ... .... it doesn't matter how much Norse, Germanic, Roman blood they may have. It's a state of mind that's very important to people. Whether we all come from Neanderthals, Mars or Adam & Eve it's irrelevant ... ... it's how we organise society and our own minds that matters.
Racial traits can be one, for instance the distinction in skin colour or the shape of the eyes, ethnicity is possibly a better one as it identifies a group of people with the same beliefs or ideas about how we should live. Some ethnic groups on smaller islands could also be a nation. Nationality in many instances can be defined by things like customs and habits, political systems and language.
Ethnicity is defined as belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition in some sources. In others it is defined as having common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic or cultural origins. Race can be associated with certain physical traits. These terms are, in reality, all very vague. People have used a variety of criteria to try to define different groups of humans and its possible to take this down to the minutest level, especially when linguistics and cultural activities form one of the criteria. If I remember my biological anthropology correctly, its possible to distinguish, skeletally, between the 3 main 'groups' of biologically modern humans but these traits are so variable and so slight that in most cases you cannot be certain. When you get down to that level, all you can be certain of is that we're all just human.
People can literally decide that they're a particular nationality depending on very little evidence. In the current Euros there are players who've decided that they're Scottish based on little more than the fact that their mam has a couple of Proclaimers CDs.
Gets on my nerves. When somebody represents a country, at any level, then that's who they represent. You play for England at U-16 level that's it, you're in it far the long haul. Even if not picked at an early age then the choice should still be made before they are considered. Che Adams for example. If I was born Scottish, on the fringes of the national team, born wearing a kilt, eating haggis and brought up tossing the caber I'd be furious if I was overlooked due to some English opportunist, taking their only chance of tournament football, by claiming football asylum. I couldn't look my genuine Scottish team mates in the eye if I was Adams
If I was a footballer I could have represented Ireland through my Grandad. But my parents are English, they were born in England, I was born in England, brought up in England. I would like to think that If I was never going to be good enough to play for England I would just accept it, rather than represent a country that I have no love of or allegiance with. I would feel like a fraud putting on an Irish shirt. Couldnt even celebrate a goal with my new teammates without feeling incredibly sheepish. Particularly if I suddenly had the nerve to be Irish after they qualified for a tournament. Basically saying to some Irish footballer on the cusp of of the biggest tournament of his life 'Actually Mr55p, an Englishman, who in fact has never even stepped foot in Ireland, is going to take your seat on the plane.' Scandalous! 'In March 2021, Adams was reported to have committed his allegiance to Scotland with the hope of featuring in Euro 2020'.......the nerve! Surely, if I was a Scottish fan I would be dead against this, no matter how good of a player Adams is? I wouldnt want him representing us, shamelessly exploiting a loophole and joining up just so he can play in a tournament. If I was a genuine Scottish international, I wouldnt want him joining me and my teamates?
Keane and Viera, "Africa, Africa, ffs if you love Africa so much why do you play for France." (Or words to that effect.)
Here we go, another round of 'us and them' ... ... it's beyond time for this shyte to stop. https://news.sky.com/story/amp/tyrone-mings-defends-england-players-taking-the-knee-at-euros-after-priti-patel-deems-it-gesture-politics-12333432 Tyrone Mings defends England players taking the knee at Euros after Priti Patel deems it 'gesture politics'. Jacob Rees-Mogg said there "wasn't any evidence" that fans who boo players taking the knee do so motivated by racism.
