Sunderland travel to York City in a pre-season friendly Last time out Sunderland beat Hearts and York beat Newcastle United. Sunderland won 2-0 against the Scottish Premiership side, with both goals scored by former Celtic man Aiden McGeady, who gave the Black Cats the lead from the penalty spot on the quarter-hour, after Ross Stewart had been fouled, and then added the second shortly before half-time. Luke O’Nien missed the Hearts game after suffering a problem with his previously dislocated shoulder, Josh Hawkes and Alex Pritchard are recovering from Covid-19, and Bailey Wright had a groin strain. Michael Duckworth scored three minutes from time to hand the Minstermen an impressive 1-0 victory against Premier League side Newcastle United at the LNER Community Stadium in a pre-season friendly. The Minstermen right back rose highest to head home his first goal for the club since his return last summer, as Newcastle failed to break down a resilient and spirited York side. Lee Johnson: "With Bailey it was just precautionary, he felt some tightness in his groin. Josh Hawkes has been out due to COVID-19." "We started really well, especially with the intensity of the press because that isn't something we've really worked on yet. That was just the senior players stepping up and setting that. "On the ball we were comfortable and created some good chances, scoring two good goals. There are a lot of positives from today and the week as a whole." Team Line ups Sunderland: Patterson; Dyce, Younger, Doyle, Flanagan; Neil, Embleton, McGeady, Gooch; O'Brien, Stewart. Subs: Burge, Wright, O'Nien, Richardson, Winchester, Almond, Evans, Diamond, Kimpioka, Grigg Injured: Xhemajli, Willis, (Hume), Pritchard, Hawkes. York City: Whitley, Duckworth, King, Newton, Barrow, Wright, McLaughlin, Heaney, Dyson, Willoughby, Jones Subs: Brown, Woods, Gilchrist, Desgruchy, Whitfield, Trialist Injured: tbc My two pence: I thoroughly enjoyed the game against Hearts, a very impressive debut by Callum Doyle and he certainly looks like a great signing. Our youngsters all played well, we controlled the game for the majority of the time, and I can’t recall Patterson having to make any real saves. I’m not going to tempt fate, but York have just beaten a Premier League team so need to be taken seriously. Anyway I'm going for a 2-1 away win Supporters can watch Wednesday's pre-season fixture at York City via the Minstermen's YouTube channel. Kicking off at 7pm, the live stream will begin at 6:45pm for build-up to the Lads' third summer contest. Ha’way the Lads
if we can give them a scudding, ill be over to the skunks board on the Warm Glow thread rubbing salt in the wounds, haway lads give us a win
hope it does get streamed... and i would like to see dyce given some more game time, he certainly did not look out of place and tried to get the ball forward in the 1st half, got robbed of the ball a few times as well to be honest but defensively looked ok...i think all eyes were on doyle but i feel dyce is worth keeping an eye on. edit: i bet RTB's fingers have been tapping away all through the euros waiting for his first match threads...cheers again
from what Prehab said Grigg will be on his way out as he is not wanted, he was only in the shop window
grigg has just never been settled here, mainly because he never wanted a transfer in the first place...honestly in some ways i cant blame the lad but in reality, you do your best at whatever job you get and he really has not looked liked he was putting any effort in at all, maybe he was and that is as good as he gets but it all boils down to that @rsehole doing the 'bidding' and deciding the club were willing to pay well over the odds for a player...fair enough if the lad really wanted the move but basically being knocked back bid after bid should have told him he was wasting his time.
well said, i was happy he came it lasted about 10 games, he is crap, **** attitude, and never puts a shift in, at least when i've watched him , can anyone remember him getting a sweat on, good riddance i say, we will be well shot if and when it happens

Great thread and a cracking first sentence I really enjoyed the Hearts game and saw no signs of any problems with the players and Johnson. They seemed to be happy to play 'to the plan' and appeared to enjoy the game. Looking forward to the York game, happy memories from our visits there.
I've never been a fan of Benji's. He couldn't even guarantee himself a game on loan at Torquay. I'd be happy if we never seen him or Grigg in a Sunderland shirt, again.
And that is fair comment my fine fellow. My thoughts are, like lots of other players, he never got a run of games to see if he could be an asset.
The club has been in a mess for years, even when we were staying up and continually beating Newcastle ... ... now we have a period of calm players will have a chance if they're good enough and determined enough.
