Think when we don't have the ball the "number 8" will drop in alongside the "number 4" but when we do have the ball the number 8 will have license to move forward. Formations aren't really worth much nowadays without additional context. So I agree with you, just think it will be fluid
Johnson said recently that he is aware that all our keepers need to be more assertive and proactive when defending crosses into the box and have been working with them to achieve that. We will see.
how many chances do strikers fail to take, yet usually they are forgiven when they eventually score one...a keeper/defender makes a mistake and we could be a goal down, for some reason this is held against them forever no matter how good they are for the rest of their time with the club. i am pretty sure burge actually had some pretty good stats and people really need to start thinking like third division fans and realise we have third division players that will not be premiership class, mistakes will be made and if you cannot handle that in football, especially in the lower leagues then you need to find a different sport i think. as with most, burge does not fill me with confidence due to his 'line sticking ability' although in his one and a half pre-season games he has shown more willingness to come off his line and collect, we have had worse in recent times and it would take something to find anyone a great deal better so i can actually see why the club have not gone all out to replace him, we are having trouble filling defensive positions right now and i feel they, along with a 2nd striker are the 'important' positions.
If Gallagher signs, could you possibly get away with playing gooch RB for the first game and Daimond Right Mid?
Good post mate. Keepers are the most harshly judged in the team. I have seen keepers blamed for goals when they are trying to make up for a defenders balls up. I do agree Burge should come off his line more, particularly for set pieces. We were a shambles defending them toward the end of last season but it wasnt just Burge. Wright was like a statue at corners and we often had midfielders picking nobody up at all. To help a keeper come off his line you need defenders moving players out the way. Our whole approach to set piece defending was weak once we lost Sanderson and McLaughlin.
Burge became an easy target for the reasons you've said. Sanderson made some big mistakes but was forgiven because he was popular, same with O'Nien, Wright, Hume, et. Patterson is being credited with being better at commanding his box ... ... something I see as the weakest part of his game. We'll see.
I just feel like overall people are accepting things not being good enough because of the ownership. We didn’t accept **** under Donald and co so I don’t know why people are now. A good goalkeeper looks like Jon McLaughlin, Lee Burge is no where near that standard.
You’re starting to sound like a broken record , we are all aware of your thoughts about Burge but sorry you might as well get used to it . I think most teams would be quite happy to have the EFL1 team of the season goalkeeper playing for them . I think we should be having him as number 1 with Patterson in the wings waiting for his chance if he is as bad as you seem to think but just because you don’t rate him I think a lot of fans do .
To be honest I think he only had one season higher than League One and that was with Burton who released him. If he's a much higher standard he certainly hasn't made the most of his career.
i have always said you need a solid, regular back 5...our defence was swapped around so much last season due to the injuries that they did, indeed, seem to lose track of where they needed to be, with a lack of confidence in each other i honestly believe this feeds back to the keeper. you could see this with liverpool, from a title winning team to playing catch up once they lost van dijk, after that they rarely had a settled back line and it showed...also, we are talking premier and international class in there and they struggled.
I’d agree with that. I think he certainly looks better than league 1. I think it’s strange he’s never played above that and is now warming a bench in Scotland.
Burge is a standard league 1 keeper and despite his failings has just about earned another crack this season.
Johnson said earlier (today I think) that he thinks Patterson's ready to go head to head with Burge so it'll be interesting to see what happens there. Seems likely that the people who said we won't be looking for a new keeper were right, Johnson seems happy enough with the two of them competing for it. Wants them both to be more proactive coming for crosses.
