In my opinion, the best of all the 'empty supermarket shelf' posts currently doing the rounds on social media...
You beat me to it. Strange how yesterday one government minister is on the radio saying that there are not empty shelves, while today a different one explaining a change in policy says it is because there are empty shelves. Which one should we believe?
I think the only thing we should believe about them is that they are completely out of touch. I suspect the only 'supermarkets' they ever visit are the food banks when there is a photo opportunity for them. It's not too bad for us here - our Co-Op has quite a few empty shelves but the other shop in the village sells mainly local produce so there are no supply problems at the moment. The Co-Op has rather kindly allowed a couple of local farm shops to set up their vans in their car park too. It's a different story north of Inverness though - roads are chock-a-block with tourist vehicles of all shapes and sizes, the owners of which have descended on shops in small villages like a plague of locusts, leaving not much food for local residents.
Good to see that a journalist is not prepared to be brow beaten. https://inews.co.uk/news/media/emily-maitlis-bbc-newsnight-dominic-cummings-1116555

UK MPs enjoyed a bonanza of free tickets this summer worth more than £100,000 from gambling, drinks and sporting companies as they took advantage of the government’s Covid pilot scheme for large events. With large events banned for more than a year due to Covid rules, MPs appeared keen to make use of the pilot scheme as they took up free tickets to the Euro 2020 football, motor racing at Silverstone and Goodwood, tennis at Wimbledon, cricket at Lord’s, Rugby League Challenge Cup, and the Brit awards. Many fans with long-held tickets to Euro 2020 matches had their tickets cancelled due to Covid restrictions, but 19 MPs managed to attend for free courtesy of gambling companies and the Premier League.
I have been talking to one of my daughters who works at the coal face with the NHS. As I have said before she works in one hospital as a theatre nurse and runs a clinic for people with ear infections and post operative checkups in a second hospital. The hospital where the operations are done has had to turn over one theatre and recovery area to covid patients again. It has not gone away. Meanwhile routine day surgery such as cataracts has fallen behind, and efforts are being made to do this surgery during weekends. So does this mean she is being asked to work extra hours? No, private company agency staff are being paid large amounts to come in and do the work. So do the NHS staff get the opportunity to earn some of this extra money? No, it is reserved for the privately run agencies. With the pay rise offered by the government and the way their staff are being denied the opportunity to earn some extra, it says a lot about the way the government are taking the NHS away from people who have been paying into it for decades in some cases, and letting private companies take off a decent slice of the cake.
On the same theme that it hasn't gone away, I just came across this. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1421815468436992003.html Not quite sure how I would cope with it.
No 10 confirms it is planning to deploy the Army to help distribute food to supermarkets. A spokesman said: “We have to be prepared to respond to unexpected events” Never has a catastrophe been more “expected” than with Brexit.
Most of the former and serving soldiers I know, pretty much all of them, voted leave.. The irony would be delicious if it weren't so damned tragic.
Deploy the army? They'll need more than the flipping army. Short 100,000 HGV drivers in the UK by all accounts - and the army has just 2,000. There's a quote from someone in the army on Twitter - which, true to form, I can't find now - which says they'll be lucky to get 200 as the rest are deployed elsewhere.
Army soldiers will be drawn from the reserve force. Those selected will be reserve army personnel employed as HGV drivers. They will replace the HGV drivers that are called into service to replace the HGV drivers that have been called into service.

Last year civil servants splashed out £696,700 on new works for the Government Art Collection to decorate Whitehall offices and UK embassies abroad, more than 60% up on the £432,071 spent the year before.
Supporting the Arts on behalf of whom though? The career of former leader of the Scottish Tory branch office, Jackson Carlaw, was dogged by accusations of art theft. A twice bankrupt businessman, after his last venture failed and went into administration, it transpired that a number of pieces of artwork had disappeared from his business premises, never to be seen again. When Johnson finally leaves Number 10, I'd be advising someone to 'watch this space' - the one on the wall where this painting is hanging. Just in case a space is all that is left.
