Our target for the season is around a point a match to get around 38 points, but the first six matches are not typical of the other 13 we have left in the first half of the season. My guess was that we had a chance of points at home to Leicester and Watford, but VAR and individual errors prevented that. The disrupted pre-season gave us little chance against Liverpool and ManCity, but we ran Leicester very close for a draw and lost to Watford because of individual errors and the £18m Sarr who made the most of them. We shouldn't confuse performance and results. With each match the new players have shown increasing signs of what they can add to the rest of the season. We fell to an unlucky penalty and a critical McLean slip which gave Everton the points, but not because they were the better team. We now have to make the improvements count against Burnley.
Regarding Cantwell: In his Q&A on Monday, Paddy said Todd was missing for personal family matters. "Paddy Davitt Latest as of Friday last was had not trained all week. Hence not in consideration. It's a personal family matter. Tim: Do we know the latest with Todd? And if he is still training with the team?"
I follow Cantwell on Instagram and he posted today for the first time In a while to say “Great to train today, feeling good, thanks for all the messages”.
Update: Burnley look like having 5 players out injured Saturday, which would leave them with 12 senior players available.
Three days training should be enough for him to be on the bench at least, but I think we'll need our more physical players for this one.
Similar situation to Everton last week, they had 2 GKs on the bench and we still couldn’t get the win.
Hard to plan this one. Part of me thinks we need to bulk up in midfield for Burnley i,e, drop Gilmour. Then I think we're probably on a losing bet if we try to match Burnley for the physical game so do we go all out for creativity and passing and build it around Gilmour?
I'd say the only player we have with the required physicality (plus temperament) to "match Burnley" is Normann. Three Normanns in midfield might give us a chance!
This game is huge but I think we will be soundly beaten with more V.A.R decisions stupid mistakes and fluke goals.
Normann is the best match physically, but Lees-Melou and McLean are no shrinking violets and 3 CBs will be a difference from last time at Turf Moor if we go with continuity after a decent performance against Everton. Gilmour could be a good option against Brighton.
I currently think we play better without Gilmore, I would have him on the bench against Burnley. His skills might be more suited to unlocking a tiring Burnley (especially if they don't have first team players to bring on from the bench).
