Say we survive though, then what? Do you give him our transfer warchest and allow him to set the club up in his vision? So the club ploughs on down a route the next manager can't really follow? What happens when Benitez is gone? We start again?

We should be thinking bigger/longer than just this season I think. Staying up is important of course but there are many ways to skin that cat without having to sacrifice the long term. I'd rather go down this season if it meant the next 10 years are going to be entertaining, modern and attacking. You of course make good points about knowing the club and players. Even the reality of him likely alienating ASM doesn't really mean he's wrong in my eyes. The sum of all parts is more important than any one player. However the club and the direction it heads in is also bigger than one manager - that's what I think we should learn from the other successful clubs. That's why Benitez is all kinds of wrong for me personally.

But doesn't that happen with most managers? Keegan to Dogleash for example

On the Rafa thing... it's like going years without a shag then you meet a lass... she makes you feel amazing, screws your brains out and then ****s off for a richer bloke.

It's only when you meet another lass, maybe not as good looking on the outside and find out she can teach you things your ex couldn't.

    I'm over Rafa.

    Wish him well.

But we can get a different type of modern manager in now.

    Time to move on.

Well it has here yes. But look the top clubs around Europe, generally not now. I just think Man C have already showed us the way, which is very kind of them. They made mistakes along the way before working out that it was all about setting the club up with a certain ethos. Obviously Pep was always the ultimate goal, so it was setting it up for him to make it all work really. I think if Pep was to leave, another modern manager would come in. They wouldn't set themselves back years by starting again with a defensive coach. I could be wrong but that is how I would see it.

I just like the idea of the club having a long term ethos. The younger generation will not remember, but the club previously had a long held tradition with wingers and attacking football. KK knew the history and very much went all out for that. He also looked at what the very best successful clubs were doing and wanted that for us. Obviously football has moved on from 442 attacking wingers, but we are at an ideal juncture to set off on a new modern attacking path.

I am openly biased against Benitez, because while I can respect defensive coaches like him, its just not my cup of tea. I see football as entertainment.

Is it just me or does it sound like newcastle are just going to keep going until ten hag is powerless to reject it?

He's holding out but not saying no isn't he?

To be fair in his last half season with Rondon, Perez and Almiron we weren’t a bad watch at all and did quite well.

Him and Overmars is an interesting package. Would come with risks attached as they come out of the comfort zone at Ajax.

Certainly if he just wants a magnificent football and financial package, it is something we can offer. Are they going to ditch the CL for Newcastle though in reality? It seems hard to believe.

Newcastle could do well just rebuilding the Ajax side that nearly won the champions league imo.

We were looking at Rangnick to be the manager not DOF, Overmars coming in would be reliant on Ten Hag also joining, as it stands Ten Hag isn't interested.

If we sign Owen Brown, I would say the chance of Rafa is high.

We might not end up with a DOF at all though.

How do you know he isnt interested? He hasn't ruled it out anywhere that I'm aware of?

He might not be, but we don't know that mate.

The story is getting stronger and big numbers are now floating around

I think you've got to look at the bigger picture. Ajax need to do well, to sell players for enough value to ensure they survive to do well again. It's cyclical for them, there's never the real ability to do anything other than challenge for the Eredivisie, get through a group stage and hope someone offers daft money for Kluivert or whoever, so you can do it again.

What's on offer is "look, get this bunch playing cohesive football, you get £150m in January to make sure you survive, then another £150m in the Summer to bring Frenkie, Mathijs and Donny in. Next year it's top 6, CL if you can get it, and the chance to make your mark in the PL."

I can see the appeal. Particularly when they're multiplying their salaries multiple times over, and are a 35 minute plane journey from home.

We don't have the quality of players to play the Ajax way.

TBH they would struggle to play the Gateshead way.

He won't come to St. James' Park,

He is NEVER going to say anything other than "he's happy where he is". I reckon you'd find that of any appointment in history, until everything is agreed and signed off, because anything else - "ooh, yes please, give me dem Saudi dollars baby" - isn't going to go down well if they then don't appoint you!!

It may not be Ten Hag, and it's obviously a bit of a risk, but in my mind so is anything with the squad in the state it is.

Aye its the one thing which would be risky. Even with a window and signings, could a manager completely change our approach.

Yes... I think our level of coaching has been so bad we'd see a dramatic improvement within a few months even without new players

Apparently we're making 1 last approach for Rafa and want to guage his interest before we move on to other targets. Staveley seems to think last time they spoke to his reps there was an inkling that there could be interest.
