Well he's verbally agreed to sign which is good enough. Hopefully it'll be announced tomorrow and he'll be ready for the players returning on Tuesday. SkySports doesn't seem to buy Lampard's version of events:

"Sky Sports News has been told that, even before Lampard withdrew, Norwich's bosses had been impressed by Smith's ideas for the squad. He will begin the task of trying to guide Norwich to safety when they host Southampton - his final opponents as Villa boss - on November 20."

(Edited for the sake of clarity. ;))

Out of interest which player are you referring to?

Don't know for sure, he's probably talking about Sargent. Josh needs a lot of training on the ball.

I think Sargent is the new whipping boy. Yes, he looks 40, but he’s still only 21 and I think he’s a workhorse and gets in faces, the sort of player we need in a relegation scrap and if he could develop a bit of composure he could become really very good - still time.

I like him, too. You can't ask for more effort than he puts in on the pitch. He always looks worried to me, though; like he's not at all settled in. Fingers crossed for the guy.

Sargent is a bit of a rough diamond, but he's also quite unpredictable in his play and that unsettles opposing players. He's also good at finding space to exploit but he does need to work on his ball control and link play. At 21 it's still early days and he will improve. Temperamentally he smiles easily, something he shares with Pukki. DF saw potential in him but he'll need to up his game with a new HC coming in.

What can Norwich fans expect from Smith as a man and as a manager?

They can expect front-footed, attack-minded football.
Smith will also want to look at the players Norwich have in their academy, having given first-team platforms to players such as Jacob Ramsey, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cameron Archer.

It would not be surprising to see him try and reintegrate Todd Cantwell given the similarities between him and Jack Grealish, from playing style down to their local roots.
Smith is very personable and honest and is good value, particularly when results are going his way.
    He is passionate, too.

Well, clearly it's Josh Sargent, but that comment is simply a reflection of Gozo's letting his grip on reality slip since DF's dismissal. You don't play two seasons in the Bundesliga while still under 21 if you have "all the technical ability of someone from L2", nor do you get called up into the US international squad or have ex-US manager Jurgen Klinsmann enthusing about you being "one of biggest talents in US soccer." Even the far more experienced Normann has commented on the difficulty of adjusting to the speed of thought and action in the EPL.

Fully behind Smith. Nevertheless I still think it's a sideways move for us.

I don't think any of us are sure what the outcome of this change will be. I still feel Farke was badly treated and Webber's glow has been diminished IMO. We've avoided an embarrassing disaster by Smith suddenly becoming available. I still wonder what Webber's plan was before that happened. Where exactly did he see us heading on Saturday night when Smith was still Villa's manager - Lampard? Knutsen? Hopes of another?

In spite of that I'm quite positive about Smith who comes to us with solid experience from Walsall, Brentford and Villa. He advocates attacking, passing based football backed by solid defence. We need all of that and quickly. The key will be his impact on the players, building confidence which brings points, particularly from the next three games. If he manages that, we have a chance.

The only thing it does make me wonder is maybe that Smith was sacked on Friday night/Saturday morning and Webber and co. actually knew about it, but Villa held off announcing for a day or two.

For me the test is the next five games. On balance I would say they are slightly easier than the average of our first eleven. Three potentially beatable sides and two potential for top six but blowing hot and cold. Five points is the marker. If we can get to ten after sixteen games then there is a glimmer of hope for survival. I'm just a bit worried that we will have disruption rather than a bounce. I think Farke would most like have got another win and a couple of draws.

That's a stretch, more likely that Farke's dismissal triggered a response from Villa

Rumour has it that Cantwell is on the radar of West Ham in January. £10m is the figure quoted. Seems low, but I believe he is out of contact this summer. Smith may very well deal with the Cantwell situation as a priority.

I think realistically we need 11-12 points in the next seven games to put ourselves in a reasonable position for survival. A big chunk of those will need to be from the next five games.

We have a year extension option so invariably when an article talks about Cantwell’s deal expiring in the Summer you can rule out everything else they say as bollocks.

Tod has the potential to be a good player but he's no Jack Grealish.

Talks of him saving our season as he runs rings around established Premier league players is fantasy land stuff.

He should be given redemption but any signs of attitude put him back in the youth set up .

Here's a Villa fan's view of what Smith is capable of doing for us:

    https://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwich-city/villa-fan-fights-smiths-corner-ahead-ncfc-arrival-8487250

For me, the crucial bit is this:

"Smith came in and instantly galvanised the place. Yes, you could say we had the likes of Jack Grealish, Tammy Abraham and John McGinn, top players at that level, but Grealish was nothing like the Jack Grealish you think of today. He took him under his wing and took him on that journey to the player he is today. Without Smith, Grealish was nothing. We had a good run when he first came in, dipped a bit in the new year when Grealish was injured, Smith went about correcting the unbalanced side Bruce had left by loaning Tyrone Mings & Kortney Hause in the January. Then from sitting in 13th, took us on a club-record 10-game winning run which culminated in the play-off final at Wembley in the May, beating Frank Lampard's Derby. When he came in, the owners wanted promotion within a couple of seasons. Dean did it within seven months."

How he kept Villa up is also revealing.
