Obviously this will never happen, his wages would be out of our reach and I don't think he'd be on our radar. Ignoring that and talking hypothetically, I'd take him on a free though. I understand that we're working to a "profile" as such in the type of players we're looking for, but the 2 positions where I don't really think it works right now for us is Goalkeeper and Strikers. We'll be playing with 1 up front most of the time and we all know that will be Stewart. We can't sign 2 up and coming strikers who are both good enough and also happy to sit on the bench. Borini has ability and a tremendous work ethic. He's also so versatile that we could utilise him enough to keep him happy without playing him as the main striker all of the time. He could play in a 2 up front, out wide in a 3 and I think he's also played midfield and full back for Milan. He has experience of the club and has played at a higher level. I don't think it's comparable to Defoe coming back at all.
We need the equivalent quality at goalkeeper and especially up front now . Obviously Stewart is great but he needs genuine competition for his place now.
Saved a penna in the semi final last year, I even called him "Burgie", never called him that. Magic of the cup suppose.
I still watch the goal against Citeh in the cup final and still dream of us winning that cup. I also agree that his loan spell was brilliant, however the debacle that followed when we kept on going back to sign him .
Even if he was bang up for it I wouldn’t want him back. Decent whilst on loan but he wasn’t really interested in coming back and only did so when no one else was prepared to pay him wtat he wanted.
We won't get genuine competition for Stewart and I think that's alright. Stewart is too good for us right now. I doubt any of us would sell Stewart for less than £7m (and that's probably the lower end for most) so I'm not sure we can expect genuine competition without spending a lot of money which may be beyond us this season. I'd be happy if we get a good support for Stewart (like Broadhead) and someone flexible enough to rotate in a couple of positions around the front 3.
If Stewart misses any long spells we need to be able to maintain the momentum. Stewart only cost 75k so we may not need that amount.
IMHO we shouldn't even entertain Borini. He was bang average when he was here. So he's going to to be below average now given he has slowed down and lost pace. I like the way the club is going with the young lads. Its the way forward - consider the contribution that the below 25's made last year.... Stewart, Broadhead, Doyle, Clarke, Matete, Patterson, Dajaku, Hoffman; Hume (t), Cirkin, Roberts.................... incredible eh?
I'm not saying it's not possible but finding another Stewart would be like winning the lottery. I'd like the bit in bold to be true of course as well, but just to be realistic with our expectations, I think it's ok if we lose momentum and drop a bit of form if Stewart gets injured. Obviously we need to quantify that - if Stewart got injured and we ended up getting relegated then of course that's not good enough. But if we're on course for the playoffs and Stewart missing a couple of months results in us finishing 10th, then I think that's acceptable. We're working to a model and that means sometimes we'll have to compromise and be flexible.
