What do we think about the old card commencer at York (2.05) tomorrow then - the 'Jump Jockeys' Nunthorpe'?!?

I'm guessing it will lead to a huge range of different emotions / views. But what do you think is it (i) a fun, innovative race which puts a smile on your face, or (ii) a heat which has you headbutting the wall and screaming, 'Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy???' over and over again???

Whatever your views though the 'Jump Jockeys' Nunthorpe' has certainly been a well supported event with a field of 20 declared. Jump jocks riding include 'Dazzler' Jacob, the Bowen boys, Brian Hughes, Harry Cobden and Sammy Twiston-Davies. Meanwhile, those bookie chappies currently hollering '7/1 the field...'.

What a 'fun' race to start-off the York meeting. I'll probably have a couple of bob e/w, can't resist these madcap sprint lotteries. Think I've already found the trainer I like best, but have to recheck his entry. Jockey is AOK.

Son and Sammie 11/1 (6 places and part of a an ew lucky 63)
Secretinthepark 20/1 Ew single 7 places
Duke Of Firenze 40/1 Ew single 7 places

    Combi fc/tc on the above

Eeh Bah Gum looked interesting but I wouldn't back Hughes with free money. Has to be the worst champion of any sport ever.

Saturday’s big race has only attracted six but they are all quite closely matched if just taking their ratings into account.

The two three year olds obviously have the benefit of receiving lumps of weight for age from their elders but this has not been a great hunting ground for the Classic generation with only six winners this century, although it has to be pointed out that the race has been shunned by quite a few of the very top contenders in the last 20 years or so.

On the evidence of this year’s form it is hard to make a case for Pyledriver. He won over course and distance at the Royal meeting two years ago and he won his Group 1 in last year’s Coronation Cup, beating five rivals; however, this term his best effort was when beaten not very far in the Dubai Sheema Classic (an eight-way blanket finish) but he was subsequently beaten in the Coronation Cup by Hukum, a horse that had been three places behind him at Meydan.

Broome has been a nearly horse, with much of his best 2021 form on easy ground including winning the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud; and he was fourth of five in this race last year whilst Mishriff was second. He made quite a lot of the running last time over course and distance to win the Hardwicke where the odds-on favourite failed to deliver and subsequently failed at Saint Cloud too. So is Broome possibly going to be doing the donkey work along with Pyledriver? He will probably find a couple of these too good as that is the story of his career.

Arc winner Torquator Tasso caused an upset winning at Longchamp on soft ground and his career record is almost exclusively made up of victories on easy ground in his native Germany. So he really needs the heavens to open on known form, although in fairness there is no proof that he cannot handle quick ground as he has never raced on it.

Emily Upjohn was beaten on the nod in The Oaks and was unable to take her place in the Irish equivalent due to transport problems so she takes her chance here. Her trainer is responsible for the two three year old fillies that won this race this century (Oaks winners Taghrooda and Enable) so he certainly knows what is required; however, is she good enough? The Oaks third subsequently won the Prix de Diane over a shorter trip but ever other filly to have run since The Oaks from fourth place down has been beaten.

The Oaks winner Tuesday ran very poorly in the Irish Derby, which was won emphatically by Westover, who had experienced traffic difficulties when third in The Derby. Clearly this Frankel colt is on the up and will be the one to beat as the race should be run at a good pace with two potential front runners in the field. However, there is little evidence to indicate that The Derby this year was a good form race. After running second at The Curragh, Piz Badile was last in the Grand Prix de Paris; Walk Of Stars and Masekela were beaten in the Bahrain Trophy; Nations Pride, Stone Age and Royal Patronage were beaten in America; Nahanni was last in a Listed race at Hamilton won by West Wind Blows; and Changingoftheguard won the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot.

I backed MISHRIFF when he was narrowly beaten in the Eclipse after experiencing traffic trouble; and he chased home Derby winner Adayar in this race last year before winning the Juddmonte International. He won last year’s Dubai Sheema Classic so he gets the trip but he has spent most of his career over ten furlongs, so I am expecting James Doyle to hold him up, avoid traffic trouble in the straight (what David Egan did not do in the Eclipse) and come late. If Westover is a better horse, he may already have gone.

In the preceding 22 runner handicap, I think that Royal Hunt Cup winner Dark Shift will go in again but the bookies clearly agree that 6lb will not anchor him and 9/2 is a bit short.

Soul Seeker ew @ 16/1. Won this last year off 8lb less. :emoticon-0148-yes:. Duke of Firence @ 50s might also carry a very modest ew wager. Love to see the teenagers still sprinting and this one came in for some market support before being pulled out earlier this week.

LordGyllene has already beat me to it, but never mind, but here's the post I prepared earlier! :emoticon-0100-smile

    Good morning!
Nearly forgot about the opener at York (14:05). Yorkshire trainer Tim Easterby's gelding Albegone is the one I like best of all,. the booking of Jonjo O*Neill is a good one for the successful Easterby yard. Needs a decent run in the race, i.e. no getting blocked-out. As said, a coupla bob e/w for fun.

Have a great day folks, all the best! :emoticon-0167-beer:

Morning, team. Hope everyone well. I had hoped to give a confident selection in the 'King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes' but every time I look at the race I change my mind. Should be a race to savour though, methinks.

Now then a serious question. Does anyone know anything or has heard anything about a Gosden inmate called, I believe, Laurel??? I'm guessing (though this may be wrong) she is a 3YO filly. Have looked through the main databases (RP, SL, SS) and can find no trace of this one whatsoever - which means Laurel has never been entered in any race ever. Am also trusting that this one is spelt actually L-A-U-R-E-L as well. Does anyone have a copy of 'Horses In Training' (and can reveal the breeding) or can shed any light on this, please??? I won't do any jokes, incidentally, about this animal being a hardy type or you'll end up in another fine mess if you back her.

Would be very grateful if anyone could supply any info.

Main selection today is Mighty Gurkha in the Class-3 Handicap at Newmarket (15:42). Has shown glimpses of a return to form recently, after a while in the wilderness. Not a bad run at all 22-days ago at Haydock. Negative is the firm going. The Sepoy gelding would prefer just a bit of cut in the ground. Good apprentice Harry Davies (5) on board for the Archie Watson yard. 6/1 best price at time of writing, available in nearly all places. Any drift from this price, then e/w would be the best option.

Gosh that's a tough one, Sir Barney. All I have come up with so far is, so the caption says, is a picture of the horse, which is a fat lot of use! Have one avenue which I am exploring, but have to wait for a reply. Years ago used to get a copy every year of 'Horses in Training', but no longer. John Gosden gives very little information and seems to be 'well in bed' with the Racing Post which I do not subscribe to. As I said, a tough one. I was wondering if Stick, Nassau. or Bustino, might have the answer?

The reason I'm asking is because of a line in the 'Newmarket Gallop Reports' section of the current issue of 'The Weekender'. Now normally I'm the last person to take much notice of these (you never know the weights carried by the horses galloping or the condition they are in. Furthermore, many champions have been terrible work horses at home.) but I did note that Laurel worked with Crenelle (black type performer) and went 'best'.

Now I wouldn't attach much weight to the fact that she went 'best' but what did attract my interest was the fact that Gosden was working a horse (the work, by the way, was 7 days ago) I'd never heard of (research shows this is because she's never run) alongside a black type performer. That to me indicated Laurel could be potentially decent and also piqued my interest to find out more.

Incidentally if you are someone who attaches merit to these 'gallop report' type articles Crenelle had worked 3 days previously and 'impressed'. Again not something I personally would be in awe of but, I suppose, it does indicate that she was in decent condition at any rate prior to working with Laurel.

Appreciate I may be adding 2 and 2 and making 5,279 but eyecatching, to me at any rate, that a master trainer was operating in this unusual (for him) manner re Laurel.

Also the fact that I could find no information, re Laurel, made her all the more interesting!!! Highly mysterious....
