It is a strange feeling seeing Tottenham conduct themselves with common sense and forward thinking in the transfer window.

After so many years of watching our summer resemble the Alamo on March 6th 1836, I'd forgotten what actual strategy looks like.

The Conte effect makes Mourinho look like a novice. Maybe that's a bit unfair because of the pandemic effect but I have never seen such an effective new broom before except perhaps Gorbachev.

When did we last sign players sought after by other leading top division clubs. Ardiles and Villa perhaps? That was 1978 54 years ago.

More often than we get credit for

Man Utd were after Bale, Dembele and Reguilon, for example

I think a lot is also down to Paratici. I’m not sure we’d have signed some of these players had it not been for him, clearly a very connected guy and he moves swiftly too.

The next step is hoping he can shift some more of our deadwood, especially dumb and dumber, getting those two off the books will be gold star worthy.

We were very good at it during the era when the gap between us and the top teams was large enough that a promising young player would weigh up the two options and come to the conclusion that they would likely get far more playing time at us, develop more strongly and potentially use us as a stepping stone to a mega money move a few years down the line. Cf. Berbatov, Modric, Bale etc.

We then entered an era, mainly under Poch, where suddenly the gap narrowed quite rapidly and we were playing in the same competitions and challenging for the same trophies. As a result, that game time was no longer a guarantee. It is no coincidence that during that era we saw a number of supposedly promising youngsters fade to nothing (Wimmer, Nkoudou, Njie, Janssen, Clarke all spring to mind), our academy products ground to a halt and a glut of promising young players joined the likes of Leicester, West Ham and even dare I say it Arsenal for exactly the same reasons they'd joined us 6-7 years earlier.

The problem was compounded by the fact that even though the on field gap had narrowed drastically, the financial gap between us and the top table was still vast, so we couldn't throw money at the problem to solve it either, outbidding any competition and paying young talent a fortune to sit twiddling their thumbs all season.

So we got caught in a bit of a no man's land, then shot ourselves in both feet by first appointing a manager with zero track record of navigating no man's lands followed by another manager with no track record of managing a club bigger than mid table.

By complete coincidence, the financial gap is closing at exactly the same time as we have had the good sense to appoint a manager who is renowned as an excellent coach, has genuine gravitas and - perhaps most importantly - has an excellent working relationship with the man whose job it is to phone the young talent in the first place.

There is a long road ahead still and the on field gap has widened enormously over the past 4 years, but we are marching in the right direction at last.

I read that as 197,854 years ago, and thought you were making a point about it being a long time. You can't tell I worked as a proof reader for a bit.

"Remember the Alamo!" Oh, you just did (do you have a memory for historic dates?)

Which reminds me of Brian Glover's joke in "An American Werewolf in London".

I won't go into the joke, but you can work it out with the punchline "... and he threw the Mexican out".

    In terms of :

    1. showing academy talent and young signings there
is an upwards opportunity path for those with both the
attitude and ability, Spurs have been woeful in recent times.

Only Kane and 2015-18 Dele Alli stand out IMHO.

I suspect that Spence will be the experiment on whether
Conte is another "meet the new boss, same as the old boss"
    on this front.

    2. financial power, the journey has been slow but steady.

    - Them lot have been severely damaged by just starving
them of a couple of seasons of CL piggy trough.

    - The empire (Man Utd) take a very long time indeed to
decline to the point where they are financially damaged.

    - The Sugga Daddy FCs : there is nothing more you can do
than ruthlessly punish any slips/turmoil that directly affects
    their on-pitch performance.

Beyond that, in new WHL (Spurs and events) we must trust
in order to bridge the financial gaps to them.

i don’t think Jose was backed in this manner…rightly or wrongly but that’s a different convo.

Conte is at the peak of his powers and he’s here to win the league or he walks. This is how he conducts himself as has been proven in the past. I like it

It's a shame but a few of us called it a while ago. Just couldn't see him cutting it at this level in the PL, and certainly couldn't see Conte hanging around waiting on the off chance it would work out. Our supposedly strong interest in Zaniolo suggests Gil might be heading out permanently.

A poorly conceived signing which ultimately weakened an already poor squad due to Lamela moving the other way.

Hopefully we can recoup most of the money spent.

I agree that he wasn't...but prior to being appointed, Mourinho did say that he could get the existing squad into the CL, as it was under performing. Shortly after he turned up, he realised that Poch had been right all along and a major rebuild was required. Levy pretty much held him to his original word and we continued to decline for another season and a half.

Frankly, anyone involved in managing the club from 2018 until Conte arrived, all have a hand in the decline - Levy, Lewis, Hitchen, Poch, Mourinho...all of them.

I think it's just a loan and that probably suits everyone.
There's a talent in there, in my opinion.

Looking at how much Gil bulked up between last summer and this, I think the loan is mainly for him to get regular minutes before starting to get established next season

If anything Sarr is the player I'm more concerned for, as he looked thinner than Oliver Skipp in preseason and surely Conte will want him hitting the gym

I’d rather we tried getting Gil a loan to a Prem or top Championship side but failing that, Valencia isn’t a terrible place for him. Had a Conte pre-season and had some impressive moments with Valencia last season so should ideally kick on with a full season for them.

Sounding like it’ll be a €1m loan fee and most of his wages covered.

Sociedad would be better, as Valencia remain a dumpster fire behind the scenes
