Braverman reappointed seems like an unforced error. Whilst she resigned seemingly on a technicality to actually allow her to wield the knife that breach could have been pretence to keep her out

My leaning is very obviously not Conservative but I thought Sunak would prove himself more competant than Truss.

This cabinet selection is blowing that assumption out of the water.

The same ‘team’ of low quality individuals with a different head. All have proven themselves to be ill disciplined and incompetent under two previous Prime Ministers.

Think he may be sacrificing long term prospects for short term party unity here.

Particular Braverman, I think she will cause him problems very quickly having left government for breaching the ministerial code less than a week ago, to be reappointed immediately to the same position in charge of the Nations security. Feels unnecessary.

Playing devil's advocate here, isn't it important to get unity within the party?

Let me give you an example. Quite often very talented football teams have failed to deliver due to internal unrest. A happy team can do great things.

I am not saying that the tories can or will do great things (even the ½ indian Tory writing this doesn't believe that in fairness), but a united party will try to turn around the (self created) mess a lot more than the circus we have seen recently. Even as a slightly right leaning person I admit that it would need to be something akin to losing 8-0 at halftime only to win the match 15-8 for them to turn around the mess we are in that they created, but unity is a step forward and what is best for the country at them moment.

What I am saying is we are stuck with them until 2024, we need to make the beast out of a bad situation. To keep the football analogy going, you go 3-0 down in 10 mins because you have Hoedt and Bednarek in defence (self inflicted), you shore it up. You may still lose 3-0 but it won't get worse. The UK is in a state at this current time and yes, the blame lies with them, but we don't want it to get worse over the next two years. Even if it gets better it will still be worse than where we should be.

My response to your first sentence would be “Yes if you are putting the unity of the party above that of the country you are serving.”
It’s just another example of party and jobs for the gang being more important to the Tory party than the public.
Football isn’t a matter of life or death, despite what some may think around the country. Politics are.

Theoretically, but these are the same faces behind two previous Government collapses which suggests placating them isn’t going to work in the long term.

I think quality is important as well, a unified party with a repeated track record of failure is about as useful as no government at all.

Of course we are stuck in a loop and should Sunaks government collapse they will just appoint another leader and repeat the same circus again as there won’t be an election until May 2024 at the earliest unless polling ratings improve or the Conservatives somehow lose their majority before then.

It highlights flaws in our system as there is a strong possibility that this set of Conservative politicians are just functionally inoperable at this point despite having a majority, but there is no mechanism to remove them.

I was hoping Sunak might be able to bring in some new faces, the fact that it is almost exactly the same set doesn’t inspire confidence.

Braverman back as Home Sec is frankly an unbelievable decision and I suspect he will be facing immediate pressure over that as she admitted a breach of the ministerial code that she herself claimed was incompatible with remaining in post just 6 days ago. This is the person in charge of the Nations security.

I actually agree with both of you to a certain extent. There is no way I see two things happening - A GE before 2024 and the Tories winning it.

I appreciate politics is about life, death and livelihoods, but surely party unity (however fragile) is better than the circus we have seen, where serving the country is forgotten about amongst the infighting. On here we will never all agree on the politics and to that `I am actually glad - different opinions mean we are all opened up to different views that make the world go round.

The Tory party is screwed, so I hope that this 'unity' will at least stable the ship, rather than make it worse. Yes, he has brought in old faces, but playing devil's advocate here again, maybe these old faces perform different under a new manager? I'll touch on football again and you may get what I mean. A step back from lifelong views may see this?

Rishi Sunak has scored an own goal already. He wants to be known as some kind of more caring Conservative, and then reappoints Braverman who a week ago stated she was right to "resign" for breaking the ministerial code. It is clear Sunak is a continuation Prime Minister he's created a cross-breed of the Johnson/Truss cabinet.

How is this a 'fresh start'?

I heard someone say on the radio today that Sunak was from Southampton where the Titanic left on its maiden voyage and all he is doing is rearranging the deckchairs!

I don't give a flying **** what anyone thinks is the best way forward for Rishi ****ing Sunak and his ****ty collection of nasty, greedy, callous, power hungry, dishonest arseholes. They are still the same evil corrupt bastards they always have been and just because they now have a front man with nice teeth and a smart suit, don't be fooled by him. They haven't changed and if anyone thinks austerity under Cameron was bad, this lot will make the poor even poorer and there will be no help for those who struggle with just getting through each day.

Party unity? What the **** does that matter? People are going to be dying from cold and hunger, and kids from poor families will never have a chance in this country, because to the Tories, they just don't matter. Unless you can contribute to the precious Tory economic plan you are not important. It will soon be like it is in the USA where middle America is now falling into poverty and only the rich and super rich benefit from ever more corrupt politics. Wait until this bunch of ****s really get their teeth into this country, and have a more cohesive plan to strip even more money from the people and stuff it in their own pockets. We will see poverty on a scale which we never though possible.

I’m not sure giving the same few MPs the top jobs, when he has the choice from, I think the current number is 357 MPs, will do much for unity in the party.
There has to be some major resentment in the back benchers at seeing him turn to the same old trough feeders who have helped to destroy the party “reputation”.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see some of the red wall MPs cross the house if they feel that much at risk, especially if as it is being suggested, public spending is going to be cut across the board. If enough did it they could force an election as the Tories would lose control of the house. Unlikely but if a few did it it might trigger a domino effect.
If it were to happen, and an election forced, I would hope Labour would replace them with “genuine” Labour candidates.
The Braverman situation is nothing short of contemptuous.
She breached the ministerial code and, if I am correct, she used her personal email address for sending private ministerial documents, which is a breach of security.
It’s just another example of a Tory PM showing, just like Johnson, that he doesn’t think the laws apply to him and his party.

Sorry but that's bollocks. What is best for the Conservative Party isn't what's best for the country. Nowhere close. The best thing for the country is for the Tories to implode and for a General Election to happen, as soon as possible.

And yet I hear interviews from “the public” where they say they’re much more comfortable with Rishi as “he knows what he’s doing” and “he was a good chancellor, so he’ll be a good PM” and crap like that. My golfing buddy (who I thought was fairly moderate) said today “imagine if we’d had Corbyn, it would have been a disaster …” - I literally couldn’t believe it and had a right to at hom …..
Sadly, I think the average U.K. voter has no ****ing idea about politics, is more interested in ****ing Bake Off, Strictly and **** TV like that and will continue voting Conservative because that’s what the Mail, Sun, Telegraph, BBC ….. tell them and won’t realise just how ****ed this country is until it’s way too late to change. The March last weekend to rejoin the EU had more than 50,000 people. They marched peacefully. It was ignored by all the main stream media including the BBC. Totally biased and the “people” don’t get it …..
Rishi will continue to sell off the NHS, cut back in benefits in the name of “austerity” and the ones right at the bottom will suffer whilst those “middle class” idiots watching their TV “pap” will continue to support him as that’s what their precious newspapers say.
God - I’ve so had it with this country. Wish I could afford to move. I don’t want to get old here and need the NHS and social services as I do ….. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

While I share your perspective in many ways, what’s different this time is that it’s not just people at the bottom of the heap who are suffering now. The poor, the sick, the disadvantaged always suffer under a Tory government, that’s a given. But the comfortable middle classes are poorer too now, and about to become a lot poorer yet. When hard working people who bought into the home owning, two cars in the garage and two holidays a year dream start struggling to heat their homes, pay their mortgages and do the weekly shop without flinching, that tends to focus the mind. As does having their kids living at home till they’re in their 30s because they can’t afford to move out. Of course the right wing press will continue to push the narrative that Trade Unions, immigrants and, er, Brussels are to blame, but it’s getting harder for them to push that nonsense.

I have said it before but it really is time for the class system to be ended.
Middle class is just an invention to divide the working class vote.
People who refer to themselves as middle class are invariably working class, but just earn enough to feel comfortable.
That losing their job might cause them to lose their home seems to escape them, but it would highlight that they are genuinely working class.
