It's not the last 18 months that's the problem. For far longer, we've been buying players who don't fit the coaches' wants and employing coaches who don't fit the squad we have. Add in that we have no record of successfully developing young foreign talent and little success in developing home grown youngsters and we're struggling from the off. We're acting like we appointed Potter instead of Mourinho, Nuno and Conte.... It's ****ing nuts.
Gil I have little issue paying over the odds for because whilst in hindsight people talk about Lamela being more likely to play than Gil in the current period, Lamela was rarely ever available when we needed him and as much as the guy was infectious with his attitude, it was undone by his lack of appearances coupled with inconsistency. Even Ndombele and Lo Celso, hindsight now shows us we got it horrendously wrong but there was somewhat sound logic in signing these players as there was the promise and hope of them becoming superstars. They’re not poor players, they were just poorly suited to English football coupled with awful mentalities and undesirable fitness levels. Richarlison though? He was a bang average player in a relegation calibre side. There was absolutely no logic for us to spend what we did on him when there were equal and even better players who could’ve been signed for less. About 80% of our fanbase knew this would end up being a signing we’d regret and somehow still went through with it. I feel like the only fans that liked and wanted Richarlison were the ones who liked his perceived ****housery more so than his actual footballing ability. The fact Everton have been able to finesse £60m from us and £45m from Toon for two of their players is one of the maddest things I’ve seen in football and there’ll be people in the summer likely looking to spend £30m+ on Pickford too. We may be suffering from being a wealthy-ish club but football is just going ****ing mad.
Dan KP says Sarr and Skipp likely won’t head out on loan as Conte rates them. ****ING PLAY THEM THEN YOU UTTER WEAPON!
Yup, there’s no direction at the club. But I would say Conte has exacerbated a large number of issues too when he’s being paid a fortune to reduce them. I’m half expecting Emerson to keep his spot once Porro signs, it’s the sort of **** Conte’s more than capable of based off his decisions this season.
Gil wouldn't be asking to rejoin Sevilla on loan if Conte acknowledged that he exists Hence why it's Conte who has done that pants pulling Which, you know, everybody but you figured out...
From Sky 1m ago21:19 Doherty out, Porro in at Spurs Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge: "I can confirm that Matt Doherty is joining Atletico Madrid on loan - this is a straight loan until the end of the season I understand, no option or obligation. Matt Doherty is heading to La Liga and Atletico Madrid. "One right-back out, one right-back coming in - Pedro Porro. the update on this, I can confirm that it's going to be an initial loan with an obligation to buy, He'll be a Spurs player from July 1, Spurs would pay around £5m, an initial loan fee with the fee going up to £39m. "The player is undergoing a medical today and I'm told he's very excited to join this football club." So we all know who's left
Conte getting a lot of flak for not playing certain players. His job is the here and now, he’s not arsed about the future because he won’t be here for it so he’s always going to play more experienced players (experience isn’t the same as age) ahead of potential. That’s fine but the club philosophy doesn’t fit with that which is why it’s puzzling they appointed him in the first place if they weren’t going to change. It’s been a bad fit in many respects. The next manager needs to fit in with the club approach to transfers, but with that comes lower expectations becusse most players will be for the future and will take a few years to come good (if they do at all)
I suspect that Conte's being paid a fortune to win things. Paratici is being paid to reduce the issues until we have to let him go....and then things will return to chaos from the current nonsense of trying to do 2 things well, when you can't do one thing in a half decent fashion. Conte made it pretty clear that he had no interest in the signing of Spence and in order to get Porro through the door, he has ignored him. He has got Porro now. I hope that it contributes to making us successful...although our need for a new 'keeper, 2 new CB's and a creative midfielder gives me grave cause for doubt on that. In every way, we're not one thing or another. There's no pursuit of excellence anywhere...just a lot of going round and round in circles.
But despite all that we are still outperforming compared to our status in the money league so where are we way above average to make up for these shortcomings?
Conte's judgement on new signings is quite a concern though, a lot of his Chelsea one's didn't amount to much and it was he who pressed for Richarlison... He's also not winning much with his tactics and selections at present either.
Neither but I'm also not running those two into the ground and barely utilising others off the bench or rotating at opportune times.
i agree. I wanted Potter when we appointed Mourinho....and Nuno....and Conte. That appointment would have made sense. Appointing Conte and baulking at throwing money, no object, at him, made as little sense as when we appointed Mourinho...... ...and here we are!
He’s risk averse so will always play his strongest team to get the result. I’m not saying he’s perfect but he wants to win the next game and isn’t worrying about the one in 2 months time etc.
That in itself is more risky, because he's playing players that will be running on or close to empty and more likely to drop a poor performance or suffer an injury.
I kind of agree but just trying to see his logic of keeping but not playing certain players for the rest of the season. I think he trusts Sarr and Skipp to come in when needed. Like you I wish he would start them now and then but he’s shown he will always go with the same faces when possible. If he plays Porro on the left to start Emerson Royal on the right then I’m done with him though
Spence has completed his medical with Rennes. Doherty to Atleti has been given the "here we go", no buy clause unfortunately. So far the spend in this window has been about £7m-ish due to Danjuma being a loan with option and Porro being a loan with obligation, might be wishful thinking on my part but I do wonder if there's a late move on the horizon, ideally a CB.
