Imagine a Tuseday night at St James' with the floodlights on and 52,000 Geordies singing "Toon Toon black and white army!", then Local Hero begins to play and Newcastle and Barcelona walk out of the tunnel to the sound of the Geordie roar, they then go and line-up infront of the Milburn stand and the champions league music starts to play....

I'd explode with happiness and pride.

There is not a hope in hell of it happening first off but you did allude to that to be fair!

Personally I think the word legend is overused and I don't think it would be applicable to Pardew if we qualified. It would a great achievement by him of course. The way he has picked up the reins after the comical exit of Hughton, just continued his steady work of us progressing and slowly changing our football is admirable. It's easy to come in to a club and regardless of the circumstances of the last guys departure, assume everything is wrong, your ego knows better and change everything to suit yourself. Pardew didn't do that and was shrewd enough to just contiue the rebuilding process, recognising the great job Hughton has done. Like Hughton he has put his faith in our scouting network and Carr and has reaped rewards.

The rapid progress we've made this year is great but I do think we'll level out and finish 7th or 8th. Still a great season. Whether we qualify or not I couldn't give him legendary status. You need a minimum of 3-5 seasons in for me. I never judge a manager negatively before they've been given three seasons as I think its unfair (unless its a blatantly obvious bad fit - Fat Sham). So by the same token it would be unfair to get carried away by short term success also. If like Robson and Keegan he has 5 years in of relative success then yes I think he will be revered in the same way.

He's a better manager than Keegan.

With all due respect, I'm not rubbing your noses in it in any way here but, Keegan bottled it big time. He's not a legend if the thing most people remember him for is moaning about Fergie on Sky, live. Each to their own but Bobby Robson wiped the floor with anything Keegan achieved, because he didn't do it on a budget that dwarfed the rest of the Premier League put together. In the days when £12-£15m would be enough to assault the title challengers in the Premier League, Keegan was out spending that every week, but as soon as Fergie opened his mouth Keegan shat his nappy and blew a massive lead, which he never recovered from as a manager. Pardew is better than him at managing, end of debate.

Fergie knew never to start mind games with Sir Bobby Robson, Robson never fell for that kind of thing, it was always purely tactics, which is why Fergie had so much respect for the guy.

You lot also need to get off the "Hypothetical" question asking, and get real. You're right in contention for the top 4, start believing you can do it, because there's never been a better time to take advantage of the absolute dump that occupies the places in and around you. It's there for the taking, it's not a dream even if it seems like one, it's very achievable so make sure you effing get the job done so the bindippers don't.

If we did hypothetically get into the CL then what about Ashley?

I know we were relegated under him but the seeds had already pretty much been sown by then and he was still learning what running a football club is about. And yes he has been a **** quite a few times (how he got rid of Hughton, trying to destroy the stadium in name, spirit and appearence) but once we got relegated and he was able to implement how he wants the club being run then in two season we have gone from the Championship to hypothetical CL. I know he is not directly responsible for it; that credit goes to Carr, Pardew, Hughton and the players but it was still his blueprint.

I know what you mean. I think Keegan gets a lot of credit for the era of 'success' we had near the top and the entertaining football we played. He had his downfalls too though. He lost that huge lead we had in that particular season and he's thrown a hissy fit and left the club on two occasions now.

Always love the guy though and he's a legend in my eyes, despite his pitfalls.

Us mags have learned to be sceptical over the years. Too many teams have been right up near the top near the start of the year but then faltered badly. Just look at Sunderland last year, or even Blackpool who were doing very well.

Do I think we CAN do it? Yes it's possible, but there are some bloody good teams fighting it out for that 4th place, and whilst we may pick up a good run of points, so will they.

It's nice that so many 'outsiders' think we can do it though. Had someone on here last night saying a similar thing.

The issue I have with that comment is your suggestion that the thing people remember him for is his 'love it' rant at Fergy...That's fine if you're talking about fans from other clubs, but I'm fairly sure we remember him for his football!

Other than that though I agree, Keegan plays nice football but isn't a master tactician, much like Harry Redknapp, he brings in good players and tells them to play good football, not sure either had/have what it takes to cut it at the absolute top!

As for Champions League football, **** me it would be exciting! It could well be too soon, it could well see us struggle and drop down the table, but as others have said, standing in St James' on a freezing cold Wednesday night hearing the Champions League music blasting out before an almighty roar from the crowd at KO, goosebumps material!

Would take that, still remember sitting there in the De Kuip at 2-2 thinking at least we can win the UEFA Cup.

IF......we get into the Europa League/Champions League and continue to knock around with the top teams in the league for the next few years, I can see the 'Hughton-Pardew Era' going down alongside the Keegan and Bobby Era's as one of, if not the greatest period in our recent history. Like many have said on this thread, to go from a relegated club in very real danger of "doing a Leeds", to annihilating that division, reaffirming our PL status, before barging into the top 6 is a truly incredible achievement unlike anything seen in recent years!

My only concern is the Ashley factor, and whilst he has improved ten-fold in his policies in the last year or so, he is still a wild card and could pull a moment of madness out of the hat at any given time, possibly undoing all the good work done over the last 3 years, but until then...HWTL

<grr> getting me all excitable again! <laugh>

IMHO if Pards takes us that far then he's earned legend status! Simple as that for me.

OT - Getting a new motorbike this weekend! yay! (only a ****ty little 125cc, but god I miss riding)

Just got to hope he's finally seen what works and what doesn't. If we have a strong push to the end of the season now he'll see holding onto our best players pays off. If we crumble now and fall down the table, I can see him looking to sell again and buy cheap.

Considering how in today's game the gulf of the finances and spending between the top 6 clubs and the rest is so big, coming up from the Championship and just breaking into the top 6 in the space of 2 seasons would be a massive achievement that should see Pardew go down as a great never mind the CL.

Unfortunately it all depends how/when he leaves the club. If he had another season with us next season, broke Europe and made us look even stronger then left for the England job he'd be classed as a great.

But usually managers end up out staying their welcome and things become a bit stagnated. All the good work they have done is forgotten about and they just remember the end of it all.

I can picture it now. It's 1-1 at the Nou Camp. Ba got a surprise early goal but Messi inevitably got one back for them. They're putting us under heavy pressure when Colo belts the ball up field, only for a fortunate bounce causes it to land near Perch on the half way line (he's not allowed in our box for obvious reasons). Perch takes it, runs the length of the half and slots it home for a famous victory. A solid gold statue of Perchinho is erected outside SJP the very next day. Welcome back delusion

I thought a lot of people on here thought Pardew was a 'Puppet'??. Surely credit should go to Mr Ashley in that case.
