Not saying O'Neill would accept the job (I don't think he would personally) but by the way the FA have worded their statement, I think they're seriously looking at O'Neill.

Now, to me, the only British, non-English person to even come close to being good enough (or high-profile enough) to manage England is Martin O'Neill, by a country mile. Who else is there from Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales?

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that he specifically mentioned 'British person' just to cover the possibility of O'Neill, as there is pretty much no one else.

    What do you guys think?

There might be some interest in him from England but I don't think he'll leave the tramps yet.

He won't be offered the job - he's probably the best/2nd best man for the job but he won't get it.
He was interviewed before they gave it to McClaren, during that interview he was asked what he would do to help English football at grass roots level, he replied that grass roots football has **** all to do with the National team and that's down to school teachers and volunteers.
I made him right at the time and right now.
My guess is he'd reject any approach but it's also unlikely that the FA (Brooking is still there isn't he ?) will have changed their requirements so will probably look elsewhere anyway.
Shame - I really think O'Neill is one of the best managers of the last 20 years and would be an excellent National coach

I think it is interesting how they have worded it. It seems to me that Redknapp is definitely 1st choice, but if he say's no (which I don't think he will) O'Neil is next in line. No Scot would want the job, and there would be uproar north and south of the border if a Scotsman took it. I remember Terry Butcher as Scotland no2 and it just didn't sit right with me at all.

Can we have that written in blood?

Fergie might like to give it a shot now that his day's at Man Utd are almost over. It'll be another challenge for him to end his career on.

personally i think they;'re tyring to make it look like there are other players in the frame so that it strengthens their hand when negotiating with Arry. if he thinks its a one horse race he'll hike his demands right up.

Again, to clarify, I don't even think O'Neill would accept it, and personally I'm not fussed either way.

I just think that the way it's been worded is quite unusual. Everyone wants an English manager but the FA stated that an English or British manager would be ideal. The only British guy anywhere near contention outside of England is O'Neill, simple as that.

I do think they would offer it to Redknapp first, but I'm honestly not sure what he'll do. I think he definitely would have left in the Summer if he was offered it, but it's all a bit sudden, and leaving Spurs slap bang in the middle of their CL/title fight may be a little too much to ask.

It pains me to say it but I genuinely think O'Neill and Mourinho are the two best men for the job. 'Arry will get it though in all likelihood. Hypothetically even if MON was offered the job I'm not sure he'd take it. He's a mackem fan I believe.
