After shipping 5 goals to Spurs on Saturday it seems our reserves have gone one better and conceded 6 against Everton reserves today. That's 10 they've conceded against them over the two games after losing 0-4 at home.

Do we need a new defensive coach in?

We were doing well under Beardsley, but under Willie Donachie results seem to have nosedived.

Can't say I'm overly surprised to be honest. He is officially one of the dullest sounding men I've ever heard.

To be fair to them, Everton put out a very experienced team whereas ours... wasn't

Beardo did seem to do well with the kids. Not unexpectedly.

Sort of the reason why Ashley seems to be revamping the reserves.

Also half of the team that is playing aren't getting their contracts renewed, can sort of see why at this rate...

We were bossing the league at the start of the season. I don't suppose morale's going to be great if a lot of them have been told that they're being let go. Or did none of them play? I haven't seen the team sheet...

Not what you would call a weak team.

Yeah, our reserves are pretty much the under 18's.
Wouldn't be so high a defeat if players who are normally on the bench for league games were getting a run out. i.e. Harper, Ameobi, Raylor etc but the first team pool is so small we can't afford the injury risks.

Eh? Thats EXACTLY what you'd call a weak team.

Since Beardsley took on his new role, we've been doing this quite a lot as well. Just playing the younger players rather than experianced younger players like Ferguson, Abeid, Vuckic, Ameobi, etc... And we VERY rarely play fringe first team players as a lot of other reserve teams do. Lovenkrands, Harper, Elliot, etc... are the type of players that usually play in clubs reserve teams.

Most of these, as someone already pointed out, are in the middle of looking for new clubs so maybe it was just to put a show on for scouts that usually come to watch as well... 3-3 and then concede 3 more in the last ten mins apparently.

I don't think anybody wants to risk injuries to those that might be needed to come into the 1st XI pool to make the squad up.

    A report from NUFC.com

Everton Res 6 Newcastle Res 3

Tuesday saw Newcastle's second string concede six goals for the second successive league game - but behind that statistic lurks what proved to be a remarkable afternoon of football behind closed doors at Finch Farm.

The Magpies were looking to bounce back from a 0-6 mauling away to Manchester United last month and also avenge a 0-4 loss to Everton on Tyneside in November.

However, they didn't get off to the best of starts on Everton's training ground when the home side went ahead within the first five minutes. United 'keeper Jak Alnwick blocked Jose Baxter's shot but the ball fell to Republic of Ireland international Seamus Coleman for an easy finish.

Undaunted, the black and whites were back on level terms midway through the first half, courtesy of a shot from striker Dan Taylor that beat Toffees 'keeper Marcus Hahnemann via the aid of a deflection.

That parity didn't last for long though, Everton regaining the lead moments later thanks to Magaye Gueye, the French U21 forward cracking his shot home off a post.

Back came United and Phil Airey netted on 41 minutes to make it 2-2, Dan Taylor teeing up his fellow forward for a first competitive reserve team goal in almost a year.

Into the second half and the Toffees took the lead for the third time in the match just ten minutes after the restart, when Gueye grabbed his second of the afternoon.

Yet again United hit back though and a breathtaking long distance effort on 67 minutes from the boot of substitute Ryan McGorrigan made it 3-3 - a memorable first goal at this level for the 19 year-old.

That parity proved to be fleeting though as barely 90 seconds later Everton retook the lead, with the unwitting Paul Dummett deflecting a Jose Baxter shot past Alnwick.

And the home side extended their advantage with 11 minutes of normal time remaining, when Ross Barkley executed a neat chip from inside the Magpies area.

3-5 duly became 3-6 close to the final whistle when substitute Joao Silva shot past Alnwick at the second attempt.

Baxter, Gueye, Coleman, Barkley and Silva are all senior squad player for Everton. Coleman actually plays most weeks.

Whereas our reserve team Kadar is the noyl one who has even appered on the bench this season, and that was once when we had no defenders left...

Throughout the league teams aim to have a 1st team squad of 25 then the youth teams. A regular 11 play most weeks and 7 sit on the bench, of those 7 only three would get regular sub appearances so that leaves 11 players who rarely get used and would therefore fit into the reserve squad along with up and coming youth prospects. We have a first team squad of like 17 so only 3 players who are first teamers that get little to no first team game time. We also have four injuries. We cannot afford injuries so the kids play the reserve games.
