Newcastle United have shown interest in signing 21-year-old Zambia striker Emmanuel Mayuka, according to the player’s agent.

The 5’9″ tall striker currently plays for Swiss side BSC Young Boys and scored three goals at the African Cup of Nations, including the vital strike that defeated Ghana and put Zambia into the finals where they won the competition on penalties.

Mayuka’s agent has revealed to talkSPORT:

“There has been interest shown from Arsenal, Newcastle and Fulham. Emmanuel wants to play in the Premier League, which he feels is the best in the world, but there is more concrete interest from other European clubs.”

Now if the agent is being honest in his claims, we have to believe that Newcastle’s interest in the player came before they made the mega signing of Papiss Demba Cisse for £9 million in January. Newcastle were in the market for a strike partner for Demba Ba and they found one, and presumably Mayuka was just one of the players they looked at.

We can’t imagine at this point Newcastle are in the market for another big money signing, not least another African striker who will leave in January to play for his country in the tournament that is again held in 2013.

Though Newcastle probably will bring in another striker int he summer with Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger almost certainly leaving the club in the summer and the future of Leon Best not certain after a troubled season and Shola Ameobi having little more to look forward too than being a bench warmer. We have heard that Mike Ashley has instructed Chief Scout Graham Carr to look for a young striker in the summer to bring some fresh legs in that area and perhaps Mayuka is that option.

Mayuka joined BSC Young Boys in 2010 from Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv and it is said he favours a move to the Premier League, which is obvious given how much money he could make here at a top club.

Mayuka has scored 14 goals in 27 games for BSC Young Boys, chipping in with 4 assists. For Zambia he has scored 10 in 34 games.

Never ever heard of him since the ACoN.
Looked okay, maybe Xisco, Ameobi or Ranger replacement?
    Going for a bit of a French/African hybrid team i think. :D

He was far and away Zambia's best player at the ACON. If the story is true, then its great news. A young, hungry, talented player to give cover to the two Demba's

He looks like a tidy player but if we signed him then we'd have 3 strikers away every january? And does he speak French?

We probably showed intrest before we signed Cisse.

I'm just unsure of his actual value come the Summer.
Obviously his stock would've gone up, with a great ACoN.
I can see us having a nice strike force, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Leon Best and this chap.
    Isn't the ACoN every 2 years? :)

    No its every year.

The real question that we've gotta be asking is how good is he on football manager?

It all depends on whether Newcastle expects Ba to go in the Summer.

Reallistically, what do you think will happen?
Can you think, who we will let go?
Do you think Ba with stay with us if we finish in a Europe place?
and do you think Mayuka, can be the lad to replace him?
Also is Demba Ba release clause really lower than £10m?

People will believe any old bullshit wont they...

This whole Mayuka rubbish started well into last summers transfer period. We chose Cisse in the end anyway.

Just because his agent has namedropped us in order to get more interest in his client means nothing to us... Its the same as that Bhangoura saying we were always watching.

Theres no chance of us buying a 3rd African striker though. Would serve absolutely no point whatsoever.

Are Zambia likely to qualify for ACN again?

Do they not qualify automatically as they are defending champions

theres no chance we will sign another ACoN player. We need to look elsewhere. We got lucky with some of the points we picked up in Ba and Tiotes absence. Wouldnt put that down as successful for next years attempt!

Be good back up. Looked decent at the ACON. I'm sure Pards won't give him as much **** as the Zambian coach did! Spent every game screaming at him to work harder. He did to be fair.

Haha, i suppose if it worked then it's good.
I'm sure Cheick would give him a kick up the arse if he didn't perform...

I can see us signing him, just got that feeling.
Need to get rid of deadwood strikers aswell, Xisco, Ranger and Lover.
I guess it all depends where we finish and who leaves in the Summer!

Ending his career due to internal/external arse injuries would seem harsh
