I missed this last January but it seems that Steve Waggott is now the Development Director at Coventry..... so he took over as our Chief Executive and we were promptly relegated.... he joined Cov and four months later they were relegated <yikes>

I understand he is good at his job BUT he now must have a bit of a reputation problem.....shirley??

    <cheers>

It was originally done on the hush hush regarding Coventry. He was asked to come in and cut costs, same as what he had to do here.

It's not a nice job, but he does it well (despite some "brown" that certain people speak of).

All the best to him, if all CAFC fans knew what he did, and not see how Murray and co stitched him up, you'd have very different opinion of him.

    Double post!

I'll give an example of why certain characters at the club turned on him- and believe me, it's beautiful.

One of the first things he did was make all beverages in cross bars and the millennium sweet etc no longer available for free to middle management and up. One week later the first posts start popping up on rival sites.

They "wanted" to save our club, but were so disgusted by having to put their filthy hands in their owns pockets that they had to resort to slander.

The club is healthier, but it won't be back until some of those cretins move on.

Quite interesting, SuperC. Mr. Murray's final years were shrouded in secrecy, especially on the financial side. However I don't understand your second post at all. I think you're trying to tell us something but don't want to spell it out.

I know you did AH- it was a rant in general.

FHB- it's because any cost cutting was also affecting some of the middle management who thought they were big wigs (which they thought they were above, and went on to forums to slander Steve's name). They knew their positions were safe, but god forbid luxuries of free booze, and having to pay for parking on match day are taken away from them.

It was a petty time- and Murray and Varney allowed Steve to become the scapegoat. The truth is, without him ad some others (as much as most disliked him, parky), the club wouldn't/couldn't have survived. Now, I'm not saying it was all Steve and these few individuals, but they were a large reason.

Sadly a few of the cretins remain.

Steve Waggott took loads of flak at the time, and if you repeat a lie often enough most people will believe it. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story after all? Never having access to inside information, I've always said the blame lies at the very top. I'm sure Blackburn and Wolves fans would agree.

Its an odd contrast to think how dark the past few years have been, and how truly bright the season which just ended was.

I see Millwall are trying to pull a fast one with regard to N'Guessan. When they lent him out they would have let him join us on a free, but because he's done well for us they want some money now. Can't see our present owners getting stitched up like this.

    What have they done, billy?

Too right WEOCB. No idea what it's like behind the scenes now, but it sure looks like a much happier place. I'll be 100% happy when I see a few of them get what's coming to them though :) ;)

Would be even more interesting if I knew the identity of the cretins Super is speaking of ;)

It's so interesting when you see someone who was always portrayed as a Panto villain in a new light - I remember posting a "Where's Waggy" thread after he was apparently posted AWOL during the Swindon Town tickets debacle.

I also always found it fairly distasteful that details of his salary were revealed at a time when we were seriously fiscally challenged - yes, it was high, but no higher than a lot of people in comparable positions in industry.

Suppose like a lot of things in that troubled period, we'll never know the full story.

There is somebody (still at the club) who was on a par (seniority wise) with Steveo during the dark times....I wonder if Mary is talking about him?

I gather the guy who had a pop at Steveo (while Steveo was still at the club so couldn't answer), on another forum, had left the club and was standing as a labour candidate for Bexley Council so Mary'o couldn't have been talking about him?

I cannot see that they are doing anything underhand. Had we wanted to back our own judgment (in this case, CP's knowledge of the player) we could have had him on a free. We wanted to play safe and try him out first, so it is only reasonable we should have to pay a bit more.

The only question we should be asking ourselves is, is he worth the whole package (transfer fee, wages, agent's fee if applicable, any other perks or add-ons)? If he is, then pay up. If he isn't, then don't. There are plenty of other players about of his standard and the two top tier clubs are releasing them by the cartload each week as clubs try to trim to viable budgets. Personally, I think we need better in the Championship, but if CP thinks he can make him another successful "project" like Bradley Pritchard, then I have faith in his judgment.

Do you think if we had only taken Kermorgant on loan instead of having had the balls to sign him up (which many of us were dubious about at the time), Leicester would now be prepared to let him go on a free?

Agree mostly, eddie, and I too am not all that keen to see Dany back next season. He was ok, and did his job, but didn't strike me as a cut above League 1 level at all, and that's what we want now.

However, the Kermorgant example doesn't work - he had already been released by Leicester and was a free agent. So it couldn't have been a loan, as there was no one to get him on loan from.

The reported money was in accurate. I can't say if it was lower, or even higher (though I'll have an educated guess that it's the former) as I honestly don't have a clue.

He really was well and truly hung out to dry. It's just a shame that opinions got changed by statements such as "no one at the club respects him" and false salary claims. Jealousy did some strange things to individuals who were overlooked (by mr Varney) for a guy who came from the community trust (not one of their own).

It also got worse when one of the "lads" (my term) got made redundant. I even remember a thread on CL with everyone praising and thanking the guy. Believe me, he had been out of his depth for many years and coasted along from our premiership years. That saved a wage as big as Steve's reported one (always found that a striking coincidence).

But hey ho, it's all history now! But you might see its something I'm passionate about <laugh>.

Also, all views are my own. I'm not wishing to get anyone in any trouble.

    My view is this....

Reg knew that painful cuts were going to be made, he didn't want to be the one to have to do it to HIS club and to people he considered as friends rather than work colleagues. Reg then got in an 'outsider' (Steveo) to make the cuts required as he knew this would be unpopular! New owners came in and cost cutting was now lower on the agenda so 'Steve the knife' who, by doing the job asigned to him, had made few friends was expendable and the person who should of been responsible for keeping costs under control was promoted?

Promoting your Finance Director to Chief Executive always seemed a strange move to me?
