He thinks saying "no disrespect" at the start of a statement and absolves him of anything he then goes onto say.

 

I can see why you're upset. Hull City supporters have always had to put up with the small club mantra, but to be honest you shouldn't take the first introductory statement of a new manager seriously.
The aim is to say the things the fans want to hear and the main theme is usually the impressive size of the club.

Very true, the current Swansea, Norwich and Wigan squads have all proven that they can survive a season in the Premier League.

Seriously, you can't see any commonality between all of those former championship clubs? Nor the fact that Norwich got promoted from league one, and went straight through the championship finishing second?! No similarities there at all?

Any why is there disrespect? You were in League One in 2010, we haven't been there since 2005. There is no disrespect in that statement - you deserve your place in the PL now. We've recently been in the PL, and when we were there we did avoid relegation, why shouldn't we look to other former championship clubs to set our ambitions?

You do Southampton no favours by getting all Billy Big Bollocks now you've been promoted. You just make yourself look a cock.

 

Because the Pemier League is still a select club...if you are one of the accepted teams you deserve to be there, apparently, if you get promoted you are considered a ursurper until you have been there for at least 5 consecutive seasons....

 

- Saints will average over 30,000 next season as they did in all of their previous seasons at St Mary's in the Premier League.
- Have spent 35 of the last 46 years in the top flight since England won the World Cup in 1966.
- The last 27 year consecutive spell between 1978 and 2005 saw an average position of 12th (for a lot of that time the top flight had 22 teams in it), so not the relegation candidates everyone thinks.
- Will be a category one academy under EPPP and have produced the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott etc etc.
- Are building a £15 million upgrade of their training ground and are looking to expand St Mary's to circa 45,000.
- Most significantly, Saints have the backing of the multi billion Liebherr estate.

Quite how that is comparable to Wigan, Hull, Swansea etc in Steve Bruce's head I don't know.

 

Are you thick. He just meant similar cities of a similar size and what it is possible to achieve here.

 

Wigan is a "similar city" to Southampton? Wigan has a population of 80,000!

He is stating it in the sense that if clubs who have just come up from League One can win promotion why can't we? He is looking at a club who had a relative similar squad to ours, and showing that we are just as capable. I like Southampton and think you deserved to go up, but you didn't do it because you deserved to be there, you did it because you bought well and didn't overspend like all the other clubs mentioned. The similarities between all four and ourselves are there.

 

What are the similarities between Southampton and Wigan Athletic?

 

Ok, compare Hull City to all the things I listed in post #6. How do they match up?

Does Bruce have an equal footing and the same resources to work with in 2012/13? He is making his job harder for himself!

 

Southampton are one of those clubs people are told to say are big, despite the fact that they've only won one FA Cup. Sure, they're bigger than Hull City, but I fail to see why any number of years being mediocre in the top flight is worth celebrating, or why having an average sized ground is?

Erm, if Hull has so little in common with Southampton why did both local daily papers run stories a couple of years ago pointing out just how alike the two cities are?

What I find odd is that in the Southampton area there are around 20 ardent City fans who meet up. Is this the same for Saints fans in Hull? The fact is that both clubs have a very simular support base. As well as simular problems, what made the sports pages this week in Southampton, passes for the disabled, we had the same debate. The only problem that I have is that my family support Saints!
