Do you think Spurs online fans can influence our new manager? Do you think it's worth a try?

What I'd like to get across is that the great majority of Spurs fans feel that AVB would be better off more or less continuing last year's style of play rather than trying to convert to a pressing 4-3-3, since the latter won't work as well and will result in duller football without a Moutinho or playmaker of that caliber.

So, I'm thinking maybe begin with something like, "Caro Senhor Villa-Boas" and then, maybe in two languages, say something like:

We love our Spurs and wish you the best. But while we will support you no matter what tactics and lineup you decide on, we feel you should postpone transitioning the club away from last year's style and into yours for a few reasons.

    1. You don't have the players to make it work. Without a real midfield maestro, using two DMs will result in a style of play liable to be both dull and ineffective.
    2. Spurs greatest strength is width, given Bale and Lennon.
    3. It's anybody's race for fourth. Arsenal looks to have the inside track and Newcastle has a settled squad, but there's no reason Spurs couldn't finish ahead of both of them--if we don't lose too many points to transitioning in the early season.

After that, send along the consensus of our lineup and tactics. We could even try to coordinate with other online groups of fans.

I grant you, it probably will have no influence. But, hey, it would be a letter from the fans--he might at least look at it, and it might even have some good influence. Do you think it's worth a try--and, if so, what would be your advice to our manager? Feel free to correct my mistakes/add/edit/change, etc.

Just let the man get on with it. He's had 3 games ffs. Harry has gone. Harry's system has gone. Harry's (lack of) tactics have gone. Harry's training has gone.
Let AVB work towards how he wants the team to perform and give him a ****ing chance to succeed

AVB will have forgotten more than we'll ever know on football tactics so i doubt anything online supporters write will be news to him

I honestly don't think that Villas-Boas is trying to change the set up that much, just a few tactical modfications, here and there.
There's very little difference between the 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-1-1 when each is used with the same personnel.

Villas-Boas has used two holding midfielders so far this season, but he's had little choice.
If he continues to do so after the international break, then I'll be concerned.

Querido Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas,

Nós amamos nossos Spurs e desejo-lhe o melhor.

I can personally just see this causing embarrassment to Tottenham Hotspur as a club, it seems to be in a similar vein to people who call TalkSport or 606 thinking they know best. No offence intended OP but he may well have differing opinions to yourself and some fans and if we win the next 3 games on the trot (or something similar) then I can see people praising his 'tactical genius'. Give it until Christmas before doing something like this, at least <ok>

I agree. Well intentioned, but has the danger of opening us up to ridicule.

For me, you must be adaptable. Of course, you must know your opposition, how they like to play, their strengths and their weaknesses. However, for a club like Spurs, we shouldn't be looking to adapt our tactics to counter all opposition, however supposedly poor.
To me, Spurs should be proactive most of the time. In other words, look to impose themselves on the opposition. Force them to change their tactics to counter us. Yes, their are certain times when you need to be a little for cautious - against some of the very strong sides, but in general, against most Prem opposition we should be procactive.
That doesn't mean that I think AVB isn't, it's just a general observation about over complicating things tactically.

Have to join BS and agree with NSIS on this one.
We came unstuck last season when we altered our tactics to try and counter the sides around us.
When we just went out and attacked sides and stuck to our normal game, we almost invariably outplayed the other side and won more often than not.

Screw caution. Let the opposition worry about us, not the other way round.

The biggest issue is can the players adapt, the skills required for the change may not be a players strongpoint, and adversely the change can cancel a strongpoint. If we're going to be playing further up the pitch, pressing teams into their half, pacy widemen certainly need to adapt, having less room to fully use their pace, then it all becomes a bit narrow in the centre of the park...does this sound like the 2nd half of last season and the last 2 games of this one! <whistle> Bale is developing and working hard on his allround game, so i think he'll be ok, Lennon on the other hand, no I don't.

Before, teams thought they can have a go at us with only 2 mids in the middle, it brought teams out opening them up, as we smashed them on the counter :)...I prefer to watch this kind of football.

I agree, nothing I enjoyed more last year than seeing the pacey counter attacking football, destroying the opposition defence. I miss that already if I'm honest.

As I don't rate Lennon and currently wouldn't have him in my 'first XI', I wouldn't be able to join in.

Dempsey Bale Adebayor is what I want to see up front.

I admit that does leave a problem with our personnel, as it seems that Siggy isn't as good as I thought he was, and nor is Jake. Therefore I'd like to see Dembele Parker Sandro as our mid 3.

If that don't work, then fine, go back to 4-4-2, or 4-4-1-1, and I hope Lennon proves me wrong. Or perhaps bring Townsend in, as he seems to be flying ATM. though can he play well with Bale?

Maybe Lennon Parker Dembele Bale, Dempsey Adebayor

In truth I really don't know to suggest as until we see the new players starting, it's hard to judge.

When you are lower level at tactics then "tactics are simple". Go of and google one of AVB's scouting reports while he was under mourinho at Chelsea and you'll see it's far from simple. It's not a job you can just turn up and do.
I would wager good money that no fan on here has anything to teach AVB, although we all like to think we do.

Also, "not for Spurs"? Wtf? You think we are not good enough or something. Any of our players can play that system, but it takes a while to implement. Ffs

Any idiot might be able to get a coaching badge but if that was the only requirement to being a managervtgere would be a lot more around.

Now, everyone man the **** up and get behind AVB and the team.

Fans telling the manager how to play and what formation to play?

Can't say I agree with that.

If he's gonna fail then at least let him do it his way.

No, thats wrong, I've seen plenty to suggest a few won't, well not to the standard required, not good enough in other words! and quite simply if every player can play any system, why bother with transfers!

So which of our players won't ever adapt to the new system? You've given them 3 games before passing judgement?

The "why bother with transfers" comment is just silly.

No, you tell us why 'all' our players 'will' adapt, you made the first sweeping statement. 3 games??? I don't know about you, but I've been watching this since Harry tried it at the beginning of the year. <ok>

"To Dare Is To Do" - Take note Andre!

I'm going to forget the last 3 games, they DID NOT exist for me starting from today, it's a clean slate now the window has gone and AVB's been able to bring in all but one of his targets (albeit the biggest one) and shipped out a few he's deemed not needed.

He now has an array of attacking talent from midfield to attack in Dembele, Bale, Townsend, Lennon, Sigurdsson, Dempsey, Defoe and Adebayor, along with 3 players to do defensive duties in Parker, Sandro & Livermore along with Huddlestone who's can play defensive while also being the "quarterback" to get attacks started. We need a formation which gets the best from the players available. For me, our best selection of players in a formation of either 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 will be (when fit):

    4-3-3:
    Sigurdsson, Parker, Dembele
    Dempsey, Ade, Bale

With options to bring Lennon, Townsend, Defoe, Livermore, Parker, Huddlestone on depending the scenario.

    4-5-1:
    Parker, Dembele
    Lennon, Dempsey, Bale
    Adebayor

With Sigurdsson, Townsend, Defoe, Livermore, Sandro & Huddlestone to choose from.

We're an attack minded team so lets give the players the freedom to do what they do best and attack the sh*t of out the opposition. Whether we play City or Southampton, we are so much stronger when we attack rather than trying to sit back and wait for opportunites.
