Hi there, first time poster on here, but long time reader on here and BBC 606, used to post a fair bit too, dunno if anyone remembers me or not.

Anyway, looking at the fixtures played and looking at the fixtures we have coming up, I thought I would finally comment.

Let's imagine the fixtures came out differently at the beginning of the season. Instead of playing 7 of the current top 10, we had only played 3 or 4. That would have meant an additional 4 or 3 games against teams in the bottom half of table.

Now I'm not suggesting that we would have won them all but if we had won just 2 we would be on 10 points equal to Liverpool, won 3 and we would be level with Newcastle.

Now looking at the teams in this league before the fixture list was released, how many of you would have thought we would get any sort of result from Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal or Tottenham? Throw into that mix a very good Everton side.

We got a result against Villa and a result of sorts against Fulham, the only games we maybe thought we would get a result against would be the Wigan and West Ham games.

If you look ahead at the fixtures for Nov and Dec, I would say that we would have felt that we could get something from all games except maybe the Newcastle and Liverpool games.

We need to all remember who we have played and get behind the team and Adkins. It could all look so different by January!

Its not the defeat its the manner of defeat that gets me , every game should be a winnable .

Great post Lewebster, agree with every word, although certain people on here will no doubt find fault.

I do remember you, didn't you go to Afghanistan? Glad you're back if it was you, and welcome to not606 anyway!

    Welcome to the site Lewebster.

Before a ball was kicked, I'd targeted 7 points by now. Maybe 5. Win vs Wigan, draw vs Fulham, win (or at least a draw) vs Villa.

So I'm not disappointed in our points tally, or league position, at all. We've one game off my target, that's it.

But safe to say, I wasn't expecting us to have shipped 26 goals already.

I don't really get why some people weren't too bothered about our difficult start, when the fixtures first came out. I was really quite gutted. Last season proved what early season momentum can do for you. On the upside though, if we're still very much alive come March time, we have the fixtures at the end of the season to keep us up.

I reckon if we'd have played the same teams but in a different order we'd have more points.

I don't reckon you are far wrong there. When I saw our difficult start when the fixtures came out, I wasn't too bothered, "you've got to play them all at some stage" - think I may have underestimated the role of high morale!

    Welcome to 606 lewebster.

Look forward to hearing many more of your posts :)

Don't pay any attention to gomarchingin, everyone knows he is a wum, he will post endlessly when we lose, and when we win, like Aston Villa he conveniently disappears ;)

    Welcome <cheers>

    Good first post mate

We are not Man Utd, Chelsea or Man City and they do not win all of their games. Hell we're not even Tottenham, Arsenal or Liverpool. Has 2 years of being on top deluded you that much that you feel like we should be up with the best?

I'm gutted that we only have 4 points but that is where we are and any realistic fan can look at the teams we have played and stay calm knowing that it matters where you are at the end of the season and not after 9 games.

By your logic every game is also losable as the opposition will feel the same and only one team can win. Add to this that we have played 7 of the top 10 already and the odds of winning those games must have been low.

We are a team in transition, a team who will pick up points in the coming months and I'm confident will stay up. I'm disappointed with the amount of goals conceded but the only game I'm truly disappointed in was the Wigan game.

I have only been to the Spurs game this season but by all accounts we played well enough in the West Ham game and the other defeats have been against top TOP teams. Not sure why the second team didn't perform against Leeds but the first team on the whole have performed well and are playing for Adkins. 2nd half against Spurs we were all over them and could have got something from the game. Everyone talks about how poor we were in the first half but nobody seems to mention how poor Spurs were in the 2nd half.

I think if we can have a settled back 5 and utilise the squad as best we can until Jan, we will be ok. Ramirez will be back soon, Lee is coming back, Cork is coming back, Mayuka will be starting soon, Yoshida is settling in well, Fonte is adjusting well, Rodriguez has now scored his 1st Premiership goal and the youngsters are looking good.

We have a lot to feel proud of and need to get behind the entire team. If your son was playing and had a bad run of form, would you get on his back or give him encouragement?

I think we are suffering from the difficult start that the fixture computer threw up...confidence must be low and pressure on Nigel high. We started so brightly that we could have taken one of the lower teams by surprise and, at the moment, one extra win would make a big difference. However, we will never know...we could be sitting here on 4 points after playing Reading, QPR etc. The next few matches will show us where we really are...remember there are other struggling teams as well.

Agree with this! As I've just said on the match thread a good show in front of the cameras on Monday and confidence will come back!

I also have to say that looking at things logically and sensibly doesn't mean I'm not depressed. I almost want this season over...I'd forgotten what being a Saints fan really means.

We were always going to have to come down with a bump after two years of continual success. We just need to get used to not expecting to win every week. TBF the players are certainly trying to help with that!

If you had a choice of difficult start versus difficult finish, I'd pick the former any day. In fact if you ask me, the only bad thing about our first few games was that we had to play Wigan! It was always going to test the mettle of fans but we have every team in the bottom 14 coming up except West Ham. It's a similar story in April/May, if we are still in a relegation battle with six games left, I'd back us. Nigel will do the business :)

In the good old days in the PL, we had the sheer joy of wins which balanced out the losses. I used to feel sorry for ManU fans because they never seemed to have that joy as they either got the wins they fully deserved (in their eyes) or were cheated in every loss or draw. I relived that joy when we beat Villa...now I want a repeat on Monday.
