    Pardew delighted with ´fabulous´ Gutierrez

    6 February 2013

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has praised the manner in which 'fabulous' Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez has bounced back.
Gutierrez, 29, produced his best performance of the season against Chelsea on Saturday, opening the scoring with a flicked header as the Magpies earned a 3-2 win.

And Pardew has credited Newcastle's activity in the January transfer market for Gutierrez’s improvement, and believes the whole squad has been boosted by the new arrivals.

"Jonas answered a few critics - I thought he was fabulous against Chelsea," Pardew told the Evening Chronicle.

"Everybody gets a lift when you bring new players in and I think Jonas is an example of that.

"He's a good player, but he's been running on empty and lacking a bit of confidence and belief because the team hasn't been strong enough.

"It's disappointing for players like him. Sometimes when you bring new players in its only right that you give him a chance and say, 'Come on then, we've got a proper team now - come and show your true form'.

"He did that and I'm pleased for him. I'm very proud of him."

    Thoughts?

Jonas is still ****e in my eyes. Needs to be replaced in the starting lineup

The emotion Jonas showed when he scored was mixed, delight at scoring, but I sensed he knew criticism was against him personally and not just the team.
His performances have been poor, Saturday was better, (He cant cross though) but because of his effort and work ethic, I really hope he can pick up his game

The issue I have is that it needed transfers to give him a lift.
At 29 and one of our most senior players I'd expect HIM to be the one leading from the front in hard times.
All that aside though I'm happy he is getting back to form as it means the team will benefit.
We know Pardew will not drop him so I'd rather an on for Jonas start than the Jonas of recent past.

To say Jonas is ****e is daft.

Jonas has been a very good player for years. He has being playing ****e for most of the season. Saturday he played extremely well, including putting in a lovely left foot cross (and a few poor ones).

As long as he plays like he did on Saturday, one of the first names of the sheet for me

Jonas has been ****e for months mind. His crossing is abysmal, barely beats his man and constantly, and I do mean constantly losses the ball. Very happy for him on Saturday but that has been probably his only decent performance this season

When Ben Arfa comes back he can have some time on the bench, make him fight for a place. The new influx of players is the only reason he has suddenly starting playing well anyway. Then again Pardew loves him and would play him anyway regardless of how **** he can be and thats a fact

It's obvious Jonas has found it tough this season - you could tell his confidence was shot, especially in the last couple of games. We all know football is a confidence game so it's harsh to question how he couldn't just play well.

As for the man himself, I think he's a such a great guy. You can tell how much he cares for the club and the effort e puts in is second to none - no player that puts that effort in will ever get criticism from me - it's not his fault he gets picked. Was heartening to see his celebration on Saturday, proper emotion. Seems he adds so much in team spirit too.

So I'm hoping he stays in the team, unlike many on here, but not because he's one of Pardew's favourites, but because he kicks on and proves his worth, and puts more performances in like Saturday now he's got the confidence.

Not much fun once you get past 21 and the grey cells aren't what they used to be.

I think he'll be our best option vs Bale at the weekend, but other than that he should be riding the bench

I think Jonas played ok against Villa as well.

He is good defensively and cleared that shot from Benteke off the line.

He needs to improve alot thou going forward and think the right side even suits him better.

If he is competing against Ben Arfa, Marveaux or Geofueff the sadly he shoud not even be starting, better than Obertan thou as he is proper useless trash

He was decent against Villa. To call him ****e is way wide of the mark.

It all depends how you want to play for me. In a defensive counter attack formation he is very good. His workrate is tremendous. The problem has been when we are on the front foot and you need a bit of drive or magic from the wide areas, he is not so good then. I think with the squad we have now we'll be looking to be on the front foot more and more. Therefore I think he'll see chances become more limited. Whether he will be interested in his remaining years being reduced to that of a squad role is doubtful. Been a good servant though and had a good career here.

I was over the moon he shoved to the critics with an excellent header and performance.

If he can push on from here there's no reason why he can't continue in the first XI. I don't think he can be written off completely but still think he should be behind the likes of Marv and HBA.

I don't think he's competing with Marv and HBA as attacking players in a 4 - 3 - 3 so much as with Tiote and Perch in the middle three. Defends well, works hard, at least as good as Perch and Tiote offensively, gets fewer yellow cards. With the competition for places everwhere, though, it's going to be harder for a lot of players to get a game

    afternoon <cheers>

I don't think a goal line clearance makes up for the ridiculous amount that Jonas gave the ball away, and held up play detrimentally vs villa. He did have a good game vs Chelsea though.
Don't see how he's competing for a spot in defensive midfield either, he'd be behind Tiote, Perch, Anita (who's the obvious choice if you're looking for someone who can push forward from DM) and Bigi in my books, and that's without considering other central midfielders that could do the DM role better than him as well (Cabaye, Sissoko).
Personally i see him as useful on either wing when we're up against a side with a particularly dangerous flank (like this weekend, or vs Everton's left for instance), other than that I'd say he'd be a good player to come off the bench if one of our FBs are unexpectedly having trouble with a winger, or if we wanted to 'shut up shop' late in the game. Definitely still a useful squad player, but his first team days are numbered IMO.

If he can put in a shift like he did against Chelsea, he would go in well before Anita for me. If he plays as he has in virtually any other game this season, though, I'd agree
