Daily Thread Monday 20th May

MASTER WELLS 33-1 2.20 Newton Abbot has had three runs since returning from injury. All three with an inexperienced apprentice and on totally unsuitable soft/heavy going. Prior to his injury he won a brace of sellers earning him a BHA rating of 110. Tomorrow he races off a paltry 77 and Hadden Frost takes over in the saddle. If retaining his ability he would have an outstanding chance in these conditions. Two of the yards last three runners have won so there is no doubting their wellbeing. At 33-1 tomorrow he is well worth having a sporting each way wager.

If up to a quick back to back he'll canter all over this field. He's done it successfully in the past so no reason to think he'll falter this time.

Labienus has just come through in my alerts as an unlucky loser LTO. Runs at Redcar in the 4.40 and is currently 3/1 best price

 

15.30 Southwell- Satwa Laird- 14/1

Just a small e/w stakes here- back to a bit of form now- has been in the frame the last 3 times; one of them over C&D and the last one 4th in a class above this- so back to his level now and altho he may not win he should definately get in to the placings at 14/1 is definately worth some e/w money.


Also I shall be having a fairly decent punt on CHAPOTURGEON tomorrow in the last at Newtown Abbot- Will get on early doors as I can see him going off odds on tomorrow

Nice to see action at God’s own racecourse, Newton Abbot, today but am disappointed to see no ‘selling hurdle’ on the old agenda. Newton Abbot without a selling hurdle is akin to the Boat Race without Oxford!

I see though that one of my fave 2YOs from last term makes his ‘classic season’ debut today. Roger Charlton’s Pythagorean, who my regular readers may recall I once mentioned in the same sentance as the ‘2,000 Guineas’, runs in the card commencer at Leicester this eve. The old boy was somewhat headstrong and a ‘bit of a character’ (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more!) last term but such behaviour may be a thing of the past now that he has been castrated (I am talking about Pythagorean by the way not old boy Roger). The plan is I understand this and then the Britannia at Royal Ascot and to be honest Pythagorean looks amazingly well treated off just 78. Is 9/2 today but am somewhat reluctant to get that much involved as (a) an awful lot of Mr Charlton’s horses have needed their first run this season and (b) this is very much Pythagorean’s ‘prep’ rather than the main event. His class could see him through this evening though, people. Whatever the outcome though this is one to watch especially with a view to Royal Ascot.

Nass: Know quite a few of the guys have been, but I know for sure Ron went either last year or the year before. He would know a bit about costs as he lives over there. If I remember correctly, he was very impressed with everything on Arc day.

Fantastic day out Nass. Intended to go again last year but couldn't make it. Admission prices were so cheap and we could go almost anywhere. There was one place where, had I taken a tie with me we, would have been allowed in. Not sure what it was as didn't go in; but worth putting one in your bag/pocket. It was really hot in 2011 so it was real summer wear.

Such a contrast to Royal Ascot, which is daylight robbery. I vowed not to go to Royal Ascot again, whereas we have Arc Day down as a must go whenever we can.

@DavidWalshST: My information is that supplementary testing of Godolphin horses has revealed more positives, possibly including St Leger winner Encke.

 

If Encke really has tested positive Camelot's triple crown bid was defeated by a drug cheat. Coolmore are going to have something to say.
