Just seen the Echo article. Can't really believe we would go for a 36 year old heavy like Davies, surely there is better and younger out there? It isn't what I expected from PDC.

Why are we continuously linked to people that past managers have wanted?

    Won't happen, utter bollocks.

    God no!

BOLTON Wanderers’ battering ram attacker Kevin Davies has been linked with a surprise switch to the Stadium of Light.

The 36-year-old looks to be on his way out of the Reebok Stadium this summer after a decade’s sterling service to the North West club.

Davies was one of the major contributors to Bolton’s Premier League longevity with his muscular forward play, eye for goal, and tremendous work-rate proving immensely influential.

He is a fading force now, but still competitive, and Sunderland have been suggested as potential buyers by the Sun on Sunday.

The striker would cost little to recruit and would have the same function in the Black Cats’ squad next season as Louis Saha did at the start of the last one – the veteran forward putting his Premier League nous at his team’s disposal.

Davies managed 38 Championship games last season and still has mileage left in him.

But he scored only six goals and Di Canio is looking for more prolific forwards.

Hull, Blackpool and Wolves are also credited with interest in the former England striker.

But his most likely destination is expected to be Davies’ home-town outfit, Sheffield Wednesday, who are managed by his former boss at Southampton, Dave Jones.

Would rather pull my own finger nails off with a pair of rusty piers than pay good money to watch him play for us.

If we did, would peoples love in with PDC take a bit of a hit?

Mon was slated for having an interest 18 months ago?

Sunderland have been credited with an interest in a player they tried and failed to sign 18 months ago.

In January 2012 Martin O’Neill had a deadline-day bid rejected for Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies.

And now the 36-year-old has been released by the Trotters, Paolo Di Canio is said to be taking another look.

After a terrible season in front of goal, Di Canio is anxious to shake up Sunderland’s attacking resources. And while it would almost certainly only be as a back-up, Davies is one of the options he is thought to be considering.

The notoriously physical frontman won one England cap, under Fabio Capello.

But Championship side Bolton deemed him surplus to requirements last season, and staying in the division seems the most likely outcome, with Sheffield Wednesday also thought to be interested. Davies is a Sheffield lad, although he grew up supporting United rather than Wednesday.

The Black Cats have already lined up two new strikers, in Le Havre’s El-Hadji Ba and Altrincham’s Duncan Watmore.

But Ba is only 20 and Watmore 19. Mikael Mandron, who has been on the bench for all Di Canio’s games in charge, is just 18.

The latter pair in particular are seen as players for Sunderland’s future rather than their present.

Di Canio will want more experience in his frontline, but new director of football Roberto Di Fanti may have to wheel and deal to get him that.

Sunderland have had four goals in return for the combined 10m-plus Steve Bruce paid for Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-won two years ago.

Ji is expected to attract interest from Germany after five goals in 17 appearances on loan at Augsburg in the second half of last season.

But 8m signing Wickham failed to catch the eye on loan at Wednesday.

Di Canio would also like to move on Danny Graham.

Meanwhile, defender Carlos Cuellar last night denied that he could join Celtic.

The Spaniard, who spent 2007-08 at the Hoops’ Old Firm rivals Rangers, said via Twitter: “Rumour about I've signed for Celtic isn't true”.
