What's the general opinion of people from Hull, according to other Englishmen? Are you seen as greedy? (Freaking Scots! ) Posh? (Highly doubt this one ) Etc etc! Edit: General opinion, not average (I suppose)
That really is more Grimsby. Until going to university I lived in Hull and I loved every minute of it. The only thing I didn't like is that the people are very standoff ish. If you disagree with them or look at them funny, you get started on. I once met a chap in Queens Gardens and he called me a "****in' ****" and asked "what I was going to do about it". So I kicked him in, then suggested he shouldn't wear burberry and drink beer at 11am. His response was to call me a "posh ****" (despite what had JUST happened about 90 seconds previous). I informed him I grew up in Skirlaugh, that I was also a heavyweight boxer (a passion I had to sadly give up) and that he was "a very silly sausage" (complete with patronising tone). Just outwit the locals and it's fine. I love the city and the heritage, suppose HRI could be better, but that's what Castle Hill is for I guess. I was distraught to find Yankee Burger has changed/shut down. They used to do really nice hotdogs!
Thick, lazy, inbred, patriotic, proud, Yorkshire through and through (proper Yorkshire, not like them Westies who are fake Mancs), tight as gnats chuffs' and thick! Ooooops! Said thick twice! And they'd be right!!
Unmotivated, whilst being quite happy to use the fact that Ze Germans bombed the city until it resembled the ****hole it is today as an excuse not to better themselves.
If it were possible, ask Alderman Sir Leo Schultz (and his henchmen) why Poulson never got a look in when it came to council corruption. ....and it wasn't because Hull was run by saints. It's always been 'pigs at the trough' when it came to running the City.
Most people down South have never been anywhere near Hull so have no real opinion, they probably think the North is populated by the cliched characters they see on TV soaps. As a person visiting Hull I would avoid public transport especially the blue buses unless you want to be very disappointed by some of the less educated folk in the city, other than that walking around it's quite nice these days in the town centre, 100 percent better than 20 years ago.
Only Fool and Horses - To Hull and Back The closest most have been. NB. I never liked that episode, I could never understand why the 'canned laughter' was excluded (or at least from the DVD, it was).
Reading the replies from people supposedly from the City I'm proud to be from makes me despair. The City gets a bad press because of the unrealistic nature of the boundaries meaning any stats are skewed compared to anywhere else, unfortunately the ****ty local media churns the negative nonsense out so often some people think it's true. If they spent a bit of time away in another City with organised crime, no go areas and ghettos, they'd perhaps not only be more appreciative of what we have here, but also more prepared to defend Gods own acres from the envious outsiders.
I lived in Hull/East Riding for many years, but have now moved away due to uni and then work after that. I thoroughly enjoyed living in Hull and am still proud to say its my home town. I agree that most people who have a very negative view of the city and its people have never even been. I would describe the people as (in general) proud and down to earth on the plus side but insular and suspicious on the negative side.
The OP said the opinion form people from out of Hull, not people from hull. These are just what people have mentioned about us when we have visited other cities etc. I believe that Hulls a nicer place than people believe, but i ave noticed that there aren't many tall buildings compared to others. Anyone have any idea why we are so, how can i put it, flat?
Didn't Philip Larkin say it was "a dump" and that it's “very nice and flat for cycling – that's about the best I can say”.
