FA Chairman Greg Dyke seems hell bent on reducing the number of foreign players in the Premier League in the hope to improve the fortunes of the English national team and his latest proposals could see severe new restrictions on individuals from outside the European Union.

Various sources report that Dyke wants to drastically cut the number of non-EU players by next summer through new regulations regarding visas.

The former BBC chief outlined his vision for the future of the English game in May and his new proposals, if approved by "stakeholders" and the Home Office, will see the complete end of the current visa system for non-EU players.

If the changes to the rules are made, then the number of 'worldwide' players in the country could be halved by 50% within 12 months and there are a number of stipulations that would come into force.

Under new regulations, only clubs in the Premier League would be allowed to apply for work permits for non-EU players and only those individuals from the top 50 FIFA ranked countries will be automatically given visas if they have played enough competitive internationals, rather than the top 70 which it is now.

Players from the top 30 FIFA nations would only have to play 30% of competitive internationals to be eligible for an automatic work permit, allowing for the greater number of players from countries like Brazil and Argentina.

Visas will also be granted for 'Elite' players that cost a minimum of £10-15m, but appeals against rejected applications will now only consider errors in the process itself rather than the existing method of case-by-case judgement on perceived player ability.

Perhaps most importantly, no non-EU player will be permitted to go out on loan, meaning that clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham will have to significantly alter their methods of talent scouting.

The measure is designed to stop certain clubs unfairly stockpiling talent and any players over the age of 21 would have to be included in 25-man Premier League squads or else be completely unused. For those under 21, if first team opportunities do not exist at their club, the only option for development would be in a reserve team setting or a permanent move elsewhere.

Discussions and talks are set to begin with various footballing bodies across the UK in the coming weeks, but there is likely to be strong opposition.

I think it's only right. I'd make 8 of your team English or 20 of your 25 man squad.
Champions league used to be about playing foreign players. Now all the elite English teams are foreign players.
    Holds no interest for me.
I know it won't go back but hey ho progress eh

    I'd agree with this.
Maximum of 3 foreign players in every team, but this has to be across the board.ie. In every league in Europe.

The whole thing is a bit pointless really. Vergini and Alverez both have Italian passports. South American players get around it by getting Spanish and Italian passports and make a mockery of the EU quota.

    Stupid idea.

As long as English players are less skillful than their international counterparts, English teams won't play them. Its not rocket science, bring in regulations from grass roots and up that will improve the quality of English players coming through the system and the number of "worldwide" players will reduce naturally.

EU though... foreign is foreign as far as I'm concerned, if they're from Spain or Congo makes no odds to me, the emphasis should be on English players not European players.

Agreed, I know it's much quoted by them but Celtic won the European cup with all the players born within about 30 miles of their park.
Until we get more skilled kids coming through we'll be in the doldrums as a national side, limiting number of foreign players should be the right way but not sure how that fits with Bosman and EU working rights, it'll be more like 2066 before we win the world cup again.

I don't think any sort of restrictions will ever happen! Waste of time if you ask me! Ideally you should be forced to have at least 6 English players in your starting 11! I would rather watch slightly poorer football with Englishmen than slightly better with foreigners, out of principle!

    The third point...

So basically the top 6-8 can spend silly money getting in the top south american players however when it comes to teams like us we arent allowed the cheaper players?

Just more looking after the top teams

    The FA are a joke

All of this makes no difference if the players get an EU passport from another country. You can buy one from Malta for 546,000 pounds.

Problem is that no other country will enforce it. Greg Dyke only cares about England and the national game which is why he's trying to do this bullshit exercise. I only care about Sunderland. Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini will never bow to something the English FA think of - they hate us passionately and they will see Dyke's plan as a way of exerting global footballing dominance over the English clubs.

I also can't see many clubs going for this either. Any rule change has to be passed by a certain percentage of votes from english clubs - how many do yoou think are going to say "Yeah we'll get rid of David Silva or Philipe Coutinho or {insert foreign name} and promote some English lad from the junior squad just to fit in with the rules."

It won't happen - I also think it's against employment law to try to force organisations to employ a high percentage of citizens from their own country

Instead of all this s**te why don't the FA invest some money in the game? Open pre-club academies around the country with the facilities and the staff to get kids to a better standard before the clubs pick them up. Getting Schools involved and setting up fa county leagues in the winter then holding a national tournaments in the summer instead on relying on private football youth teams to bring them through. An Fa Academy of Excellence in every county with access for all facilities. That will raise the standard, not robbing them of the chance to learn from the best in the world at a later stage.

Foreigners are vital to the game in this country imo. the only reason there's so many average overseas players playing in premiership is because there isn't enough good to average English players being produced. Produce more English kids to a better standard and you'll get less average overseas player playing here. Dyke hasn't got a clue, the problem is way earlier in the chain. Ive said this time and time again on this very forum, our county is ****ed Bri.

How many sets of lads do you see kicking a ball against a garage door nowadays, or jumping about in the mud down the park to pretend they're Peter Schmeichel? None. Cos they're all inside playing XBox because their parents are terrified that some paedo will snatch them or some knife weilding burqa-clad mentalist will cut their head off.

This country has changed, into a **** tip where everybody has to be equal... in schools kids won't be allowed to be better than other kids at things anymore incase Muslim kids get offended, this country is ****ter than it's ever been, we'll probably have one of the worst national teams in the world in 20-30 years time.

    Cheshire... obviously!

If you have a good heart and a good open mind, you can find the gems amongst society, so I'm told.

On a more positive note, the way things are going, I'll have a **** kid who can't kick a ball straight but he'll be playing for England and on £7m quid a week!
