Well, there you have it guys. All five of the goals Liverpool scored were solely the fault of Russell Martin. If we didn't play him we would keep a clean sheet every game.

WTF do these guys get paid for? "So what do Norwich need to do?" "Norwich need to buy better players" Well there we have it chaps the font of unending knowledge has spoken. Seriously who designed that set? They look like they're on a camping holiday in a caravan at a Haven site.

I love the bit Norwich where they slag Norwich off but then conveniently forget that we also scored 4 goals today but we'll gloss over that eh? These pundits are just crap they really are utter plonkers

I get the impression that being a pundit is more about thinking highly of yourself with regards to what you think you know about football rather than what others think of you.

There are some good commentators out there like Pat Nevin and Norfolk's own Chris Goreham but when national media pundits talk about Norwich...

Danny Mills did the coverage for radio yesterday and like Chris Sutton, clearly has no 'soft spot; for one of his old clubs. Which is fair, I guess, he has a duty to tell it exactly as it is. But then why do they get Lee Dixon and Martin Keown to summarise Arsenal matches?

Lee Dixon is one of my least favourites. The kind you would discribe as an 'ITV pundit'.

What's more, I feel if Rodgers were still Liverpool manager the Liverpool fans and the media would be ripping him apart even after the 5th goal.

No it didn't, that's absolute rubbish. Martin was at fault for the fourth goal, clearly, but I can't see how he can be blamed for the three that we conceded before that, or the one that robbed us of a point at the death. I was watchng Martin closely all game on Saturday (not just waiting for him to make a mistake like most of our fans appear to) and for the first 60 minutes (in my opinion) he was having an excellent game. He made some good blocks and tackles, he got into good positions defensively and his passing was absolutely top notch. And then he made that calamitous error for the fourth goal (still not sure what he was thinking) which open the floodgates for him to be the scapegoat for everything that went wrong and then suddenly it's ALL his fault.
    Rubbish.

Brady was at fault for at least two of the goals, and in my opinion his header back in the middle of the penalty box in the 95th was almost as calamitous as Martin's error - what was he thinking? Head the bloody thing anywhere but there! I can only imagine how much stick Martin would be getting had it been he who had done that.

I also keep reading about how brilliant Pinto was, and I've read hardly anything critical of him either, despite the fact he was caught out of position so many times it was ridiculous. I agree he looked fantastic going forward, looks classy and has a great touch, but surely he can't play behind Redmond too often leaving us that exposed too often can he? Especially against a side like Liverpool, just seems to be suicidal to me. Again if Whittaker had put in that performance he would be getting pelters today.

And why Mulumbu didn't get on the field at all I have absolutely no idea. When I saw the starting line-up I just couldn't believe how little cover there was for our defence and said to my mate that this was going to be an absolute goalfest. Probably the most attacking lineup I've ever seen us start with at this level, a hell of a gamble and one that ultimately failed. The big turning point was their second goal, if we cold have hung on at 3-1 until the 60 minute mark then I would have expected AN to have been looking to bring Mulumbu on for either Wes or Redmond to shore us up a bit, but we conceded pretty much straight away which put us on the back foot and we then caved in. And when we did make the changes why on earth did Jarvis come on?? He did absolutely nothing apart from give the ball away, why we didn't add a bit of steel in the midfield by bringing Mulumbu on again I have absolutely no idea, but for me it was a mistake by the manager, and not the first one he had made that day. So with Brady and Pinto at full-back, both of whom players who instinctively want to get forward, and no DMC holding the midfield we effectively started (and finished) the game with only two what you'd call out-and-out defenders, and apparently the defeat was all the fault of one of them. Again, rubbish.

Despite the fact the first 60 minutes was amongst the best I have ever seen us play (certainly in the past 20 years or so anyway) at this level, and despite the fact we scored four goals against Liverpool and witnessed some excellent individual and team performances (the way we passed the ball around their midfield and showing some superb touches and movement in the first half was a thing to behold) I'm afraid we were ultimately undone by a series of mistakes, and whilst the dreadful one by Martin is the one that grabs the headlines and ire of our fans, for me the mistakes by Brady in the 95th minute, and those of our manager were just as, if not more costly on the day.

But of course that's just my opinion, and I don't for a second expect anyone on here to agree with me.

Not in so many words, no, but it's clearly what everyone is alluding to and if you can't see that then I'm not sure what you're on about. But if you are looking for a direct quote then just look at the one in bold in the above post <ok>

    Fair points, Munky <ok>
I agree with the blame resting mainly at the gaffer's door, for not opting to have more of a defensive shield in front of a(nother!) hastily re-jigged defence.
Mulumbu may not be the answer, holy Moses, we've not seen enough of him to judge, whereas the coaching staff have, but with O'Neil's dumb-arsed suspension and AT's illness why did AN consider Dorrans the answer??
And, as been said by many on here and other threads, there's a burning desire to see Brady at left mid rather than left full back. Problem being, of course, that Olsson can also be fragile defensively and has been caught out of position many times earlier this season.

Question in closing - do fans of all teams need a a scapegoat, somebody to put in the stocks and pelt with rotten fruit...or is it just NCFC? :emoticon-0112-wonde

Equal split for me, Brady was at fault for the first, clearly fell asleep and didn't step out with the rest of the defence, and the fifth ! Why he headed it back into the mixer only he will know?
Rusty, well the back pass, enough said, the third he came across when we had two yellow shirts going to the winger and he followed in leaving Ferminio on his own & for Hendersons goal he and Bass just switched off between them high lighting Naismiths gripe that no communication was happening!
Clearly that's a problem that needs addressing asap and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Naismith get the arm band very soon.

Just to add to the scapegoat-ness, Martin received a horrendously low match rating on WhoScored (4.7 ).
I don't think I've seen one that low in a long time.

    Good post Munky.

You are spot on that it is important to have balance and accept that Martin was also excellent at times - I think Neil made a brave and tactically astute decision picking him at CB, it just didn't work. A part of me thinks fans talk it up - it was almost as if 75% of Carrow Road were begging for Martin to make a mistake just so they can shout "I told you so" to the manager. Ultimately, though, I think everyone accepts that his blunder not only cost us the lead but also led to heads dropping and the defeat.

I have to disagree with you somewhat on Pinto though. Not that he wasn't caught out of position - he certainly was. But his delivery was excellent and was an essential part of the set piece threat we posed on Saturday which I feel we have been missing when a right-footer is needed (i.e. not Brady). So attacking fullbacks like him will get caught out frequently, but usually you would expect a DM to be covering - as Naismith said after the game, the whole team left the defenders exposed and failed to communicate. I think Pinto wouldn't have looked so fragile defensively if Tettey had been on the pitch, but we already know that missing Tettey was the problem and how important he has been to us! Finally, while there is no doubt that Pinto got turned inside out a number of times in the first half and really struggled, but he isn't the first and won't be the last to look foolish against Ibe - what I thought was impressive, though, was that he picked himself up and improved considerably (helped by Ibe tiring, sure) and when Pinto was out of position he sure as hell bust a gut to get back and he is rapid. <ok>

I think we actually mostly agree on Pinto Rob. I also thought he was brilliant going forward, looks classy with great touch and composure and certainly looks like he will be a good addition to our squad. However I also share your views that he got exposed too many times on Saturday - particularly with Redmond in front of him - and I also totally agree that Tettey (or another DMC) would have helped him out and given him at least a modicum of cover when he pushed forward. So basically he was excellent going forward but did expose some defensive frailties - sounds quite a lot like the much maligned Stephen Whittaker to me that does! (not a direct comparison, from what I saw on Saturday Pinto is clearly a better footballer than SW)

At one point we had 5 players surrounding a single Liverpool player out on the right wing, Martin was one of them, that single player still got into our penalty box. It's the captains job to organise at the back and he failed on that and many other occasions. As to the back pass, once again extremely poor decision making and in my opinion a responsibility dump, he didn't even look up, it looked like he just wanted to pass the responsibility to someone else without even looking or making a call. Scapegoat, no he shouldn't be, as it's a team game, but leader/captain/centre back NO. Never again please.

...and (I'm assuming my maths isn't letting me down here) that means there were four others surrounding this single Liverpool player - are you going to call them out at all, or did it remain purely Martin's fault?

Not trying to excuse him for the backpass as it was a very bad error, are you going to mention the incident in the first half where a careless backpass from Wes almost cost us a goal? No? Oh, you do surprise me.
