May be this topic is already beaten to death.

IMHO - Championship, League one etc play offs are absolute tosh!!

HTF - Wednesday get a chance against Brighton, who are 15 pts & 3 places above Sheff??

HTF - Barnsley get a chance against Walsall who are 10pts & 3 places above Barns??

This is a easy route for teams finishing 6th build up momentum and do a smash & grab.
Luck is the only way. No justice served to better league form. Might as well change league format to Knock out brackets <doh>

Ideal play off should be played only if the points separating contiguous teams is less than or equal to 3 pts!!

Or change it like American footy Wildcard as first round in play off.
This will be more accurate to the league form.

Wildcard R1 - Winner of 5th (Derby) vs 6th (Wed)
Wildcard R2 Winner of R1 to play 4th (away at Hull)
Play off Final @ Wembley - Winner of R2 to play 3rd (Brighton)

    What you say??

... I look at it is slightly differently - the play-offs give many teams the incentive to keep playing right to the end of the season ... yes it does seem a bit harsh on the third place team ... but the reality is that they were not good enough to get in the first two ... every team knows the rules at the beginning of the season ...

I don't suggest to take out 6th spot from play off position. Every team will have the incentive to push for.
Just that FA should think about changing the format FFS!!

Stupid 2 leg tie and 1st leg away for the 3rd placed team at 6th placed team - WTF is that??
Tie is over for a top team away at a bottom team due to this ridiculous format. No need for 2nd leg. <doh>

Let 6th place earn their right by playing additional play off matches against 5th & 4th placed teams before laying glove on 3rd.
    That is my point.

I like the playoff format , give a spot to an exciting finish to the season with a surprise maybe .
You don't make the top two , two bad ...playoffs bound .
If I was made to change something I would make it top 5 teams only . Top 2 promoted . 4 and 5 play a one game winner at Wembley to see who plays 3 in the final .

Agreed - something like this will serve Justice.
Yesterday & Today are dire for 3rd placed teams against 6th place in Championship & League one.

Have 3rd play 6th, and 4th play 5th, the teams in the 3rd and 4th positions get home advantage, one leg only.

I like this idea, a bit like the Scottish system but keeping the same amount of league places in a position for potential promotion to keep teams battling but giving third an advantage. Add Accrington to your list, them, Walsall and Brighton all lost out on automatic promotion on the last day and it destroys them mentally for the playoffs

I wouldn't change anything, big of fan of the playoffs. Usually up there with the most exciting games all season, particularly the Championship final.

I like it the way it, teams will play to the end of the season to get a top 6 place.

Also did you know the Championship final is the richest football game in the world

I think the teams that finish higher up should have an advantage. Playing at home in a one leg tie seems fair. But that would impact on gate receipts and advertising income. It's all about the revenue!

The teams who finish higher get the advantage of the second leg being at home.

3rd and 4th place should play at home. 1 leg, extra time and penalties if required. Give 5th and 6th place an incentive to pull their fingers out of their arses instead of knowing it does not matter even if you are 15 points behind. Whether you know the rules or not at the beginning of the season is irrelevant. You don't have the power to change them and you are not going to decide to drop out of the season. That is their bread and butter so whether you know the format or not is irrelevant. It is still a **** format by a ****ty organisation.

Yea I agree, the team especially in 3rd are busting their nuts to try and get automatic promotion while the teams below can just "rest up, take it easy" with view to being as fresh as possible for a knockout competition. It's not totally fair but hey ho...

Every team knows from the start of the season of the layout and every team are happy with it.

Agree with your point but I would go further. Just bin them altogether. We have the FA Cup and League Cup to keep us busy as far as entertaining, dramatic cup ties go. The entire premise of a league is that consistency from August to May places you in your deserved place in the football league structure.

I know everybody knows the rules at the start of the season, and I know 'it keeps the incentive for teams to play til the end' but frankly that doesn't wash for me. it has never sat right that a team can be promoted to the premier league at the expense of a team who finished over 10 points ahead of them.

They won't be got rid of, of course, because they are a highly financially lucrative event that make a tonne of money and entertain us neutrals. But what entertains me and what I think are right are not necessarily the same thing.

PS I do not have a dog in the fight this year, I am not referring to any specific team - I actually couldnt even tell you who are in the play offs (as embarrassing as that sounds - normally I would I just havent kept up with it) - I am speaking very much generally.

PPS I actually think in some seasons not having playoffs would improve the entertainment, as teams would no longer be able to settle for finishing in 6th and putting everything into the playoffs - the 4th, 5th and possibly 6th placed teams would be going hell for leather for the last 2 months of the season to fight for the 3rd place. I know this would not always be the case, just providing an alternative scenario..

And after resting up - 6th get to play at home & destroy already worn out 3rd. FFS FA <doh>

These above <ok>. FA take note FFS!!

In 99% scenarios tie is over after First leg. Useless Advantage tbh.
Read first post in this quote!!

It is a well known stat that - 6th finishing teams get promoted more than 3rd & 4th both put together!!
That is a disgrace. So with 1st, 2nd - 6th get promoted more than 70%.

So if you are not top 2, try finishing 6th rather than 3rd, 4th or 5th!! Some way to make leagues interesting FA <doh>
