Queens kicked off their pre-season with a comfortable 4-0 win over local side Dalbeattie Star.

It was literally a game of two halves with Queens swappping all 11 players at half time and scoring 2 goals in each half while taking the opportunity to give the new summer signings and some of the U20s some game time.

The two first half golas were scored by Dale Hilson. The first, on 22 minutes, a looping header from a Brotherston cross and the second, on 35 minutes, a neat finish after retrieving a deep Anderson cross and turning back inside before firing past the keeper. Had it not been for the home keeper the scoreline could have been a lot worse for Dalbeattie.

The two second half goals were scored by Owen Moxon, on 49 minutes, with another header and Aiden Smith who finished the scoring, on 67 minutes, when he rounded the keeper after Lyndon Dykes slid a perfect ball through the defense into his path.

Last Tuesday afternoon Queens beat Carlisle United 3-2 at their training ground at Brunton Park. It was a difficult test but a fine performance from the side who raced into a 2-0 half time lead thanks to goals from Dale Hilson and Steven Rigg. The Cumbrians mounted a second half come back, with Reggie Lambe scoring before Danny Grainger equalised. However another former Carlisle player came back to haunt them when Owen Moxon grabbed the winner.

Annan 0-4 Queen of the South

It was another comfortable pre-season win tonight as Queens scored 4 without reply against local rivals Annan at Galabank.

The visitors started with a strong lineup and had the majority of the play in the first half but could only register one goal. That came on 21 minutes when Hilson twisted and turned out wide before playing in a low cross which Rigg stooped to head in at the near post. The two strikers combined again shortly after, this time Rigg was the provider but Hilson could only watch his shot cannon off the post. Brotherston also hit the woodwork late on in the half with a dipping long range shot and in between those chances Dowie should have done better with a free header from a Hamill corner.

It was all change again at the half for Queens, with only Robinson, Marshall and Brotherson returning for the second half.

Again, it was mostly Queens in possession and they went further ahead on 68 minutes with a well worked goal between Lyle and Smith. The youngster intercepted a poor clearance, laid it off to Lyle who then played Smith in through the inside left channel. Smith showed great vision to spot his strike partner making the run into the box and cut it back perfectly for Lyle to finish from 6 yards.

And it was Lyle who got the third goal just a couple of minutes later. This time Millar was the creator when he cut out a poor clearance by the Annan keeper before sliding the ball into Lyles path just inside the box. The veteran striker cut inside a defender before placing the ball past the keeper into the net.

Lyle also had a big hand in the fourth, and final, goal of the night. He held the ball up on half way before playing a lovely through ball to Connor Murray down the right. The youngster showed great skill and speed to tear down the wing before delivering a brilliant cross into the box for Aiden Smith to guide home at the far post.

There is one more friendly, tomorrow (Wednesday) at Penrith before it all kicks off again with the Betfred Cup on Saturday, away to Queens Park. And dont forget the first home game of the season is just one week away when Airdrie are the visitors in the same competition.

    Queens Team (1st Half) : 1. Robinson 2. Hamill 3. Marshall 4. Dowie 5. Higgins 6. Pickard 7. Anderson 8. Tapping 9. Hilson 10. Rigg 11. Brotherson

    Queens Team (2nd Half) 1. Robinson 15. Jacobs 3. Marshall (23. Brannan) 17. Hooper 16. Brownlie 14. Millar 19. Moxon 20. Dykes 11. Brotherson (24. Murray) 12. Lyle 18. Smith

Young Queens Side Edge Out Penrith 4-3
please log in to view this image

It was a very young Queens side who made the journey to Penrith for the final pre-season friendly following the game at Annan the previous evening. Jim Atkinson and Scott Hooper, at 21, were the veterans of the side which included a 17 year old in the starting eleven and two 16 year olds on the bench.

A low key first half gave little indication of what was to come but the home side led 1-0 at the interval after breaking the deadlock when a loose ball was blasted home from 12 yards following a corner kick midway through. Just before the interval, Ross Fergusson picked up a minor injury which was to have a major effect on the game as he was replaced for the second half by u20's striker Jay McInally.

The second period was only two minutes old when McInally drew Queens level with a "worldy". Gaining possession down the left channel he made good ground to the bye-line and then, with everyone expecting a cut-back, smashed the ball high across the goalkeeper into the top corner from an almost impossible angle!

On the hour mark Penrith took the lead again when a high and fairly aimless bouncing ball into the box was missed by everyone and somehow managed to bounce its way directly into the far corner of the net. It was a clumsy goal to lose but kicked off a crazy five minutes or so which saw another three goals. First Owen Moxon's excellent free kick delivery to the back post saw Bob Murray climb highest to head another equaliser via the goalpost, and then a careless loss of possession in defence saw the home side break forward 5 against 3 and capitalise on their extra numbers to tap home from close range. On 66 minutes we were all square again though at 3-3 as Jay McInally seized on a through ball down the right side of the penalty area this time and hammered the ball past the goalkeeper again from 10 yards or so.

A succession of subs made the side even younger but it looked like there would be no further scoring until, in the 90th minute, Owen Bell's pass sent that man McInally bursting into the box again. A desperate defensive challenge brought his run to an end but at the cost of a penalty kick! Unfortunately, though there was clearly no malice in the tackle, Jay's foot had been planted and he was badly hurt in the process. There was a long delay while he was treated and stretchered from the field. He later attended Carlisle Hospital but the good news was the early indications are that nothing was broken. Back on the pitch meantime, after the delay the penalty seemed almost an irrelevance but it was still to be taken and Owen Bell stepped up to do the honours. His kick was blocked by the goalkeeper but the rebound fell straight back to him to knock into the net and clinch the win. The final whistle blew as soon as play was re-started.

That completes the pre-season fixtures and competitive action begins on Saturday when we are away to Queen's Park in the Betfred Cup. Please remember that the match has been moved to Airdrie due to problems with the playing surface at Hampden.

    Team v Penrith:
    1 J Atkinson, 2 J Brannan, 3 R Evans (S Glean 69), 4 O Bell, 5 R Murray, 6 S Hooper (J Thompson 69), 7 C Murray (R Miller 15), 8 O Moxon (A Uphill 67), 9 R Fergusson (J McInally 45), 10 A Smith (R Hogg 65), 11 R Nelson

Queens kicked off their League Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Queens Park at the Excelsior Stadium. First-half goals from Jake Pickard and Andy Dowie put The Doonhamers in easy streets and the result never looked in doubt as Queens had several chances to extend their lead throughout the ninety minutes. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Hampden Park but after the national stadium was deemed unplayable on Wednesday, due to the grass being damaged from several concerts in the past month, the match was moved to Group E rivals Airdrieonians ground. <cool>

Queens followed up Saturdays victory over Queens Park with another win in the newly formed Betfred league cup as they defeated Airdie by the same two - nil scoreline at Palmerston tonight.. The win helped Queens consolidate their position as Group E leaders, and following a convincing first forty-five minutes in which they scored twice and could have easily scored as many more, the home side were largely untroubled and saw out the game comfortably.

With a run of 3 games in 8 days it was quite surprising that Queens boss, Gavin Skelton, limited his selection changes to just the one with the inclusion of Derek Lyle starting ahead of Steven Rigg being the only change to the one that kicked-off against Queens Park. Visitors Airdrie included former Queens players Ryan Conroy, and Iain Russell, and for once, Russell failed to find the net against Queens which must go down as something of a surprise!!!
The first competitive home game of the season was also the chance for many fans to see the new additions to the squad, and all were included as Queens lined up in a 4-4-2 formation. Jamie Hamill, Grant Anderson, and Lyndon Dykes all started the game, whilst the returning Lee Robinson lined up between the posts.
Before the kick-off both sets of players and fans stood in silence to respect a minutes silence for former Queens player, Chris Mitchell, whose life ended so tragically.
The home side almost got off to the perfect start when Dykes found the ball at his feet some 10-yards from goal, but his scuffed attempt was comfortably held by Airdrie `keeper Ferguson. Having settled slightly better, the away side might have opened the scoring themselves after some tidy play involving the two former Queens players, but from Russell`s clever pull back,McLaughlin`s effort was well off target.
The opening goal was not long in coming and when it arrived on 9 minutes it gave all the momentum to Queens. Dale Hilson found Anderson wide on the right and the former Raith man delivered a cross of pin-point accuracy that was guided home by the head of Derek Lyle giving the striker the honour of scoring the first home goal for season 2016-17.
As the game progressed the home side assumed almost total control and with Jamie Hamill and Grant Anderson combining well, they racked up several chances to add to their lead. An Anderson cross caused panic in the visiting defence and although Hilson was unable to capitalise, Queens looked likely to score almost every time they attacked. They went close again on 17 minutes when Hilson`s pass to Hamill set up another crossing opportunity, but the cross was a fraction to close to the `keeper who took the ball only just ahead of Anderson`s jump. The visitors should probably have drawn level when Faria headed straight at Robinson from a corner, and from almost being level, they paid the price minutes later.
The second goal was coming and after 24 minutes Queens doubled their advantage and what a well worked goal it was. Hamill and Callum Tapping exchanged passes before releasing Jake Pickard and just as it seemed as though the youngster was running out of pitch he delivered the ball to the near post where Derek Lyle was on hand to flick the ball home from the tightest of angles. There was some debate whether or not Lyle had reached the ball before Airdrie defender Gorman, but for me, it`s another one towards that magic total of 100 Queens goals for Lyle.
Airdrie hadn`t posed too many problems for Queens during the opening 30 minutes or so, and a strong, solid challenge from Andy Dowie put a halt to Ryan breaking beyond the home defence as the away side tried to find a way into the game.Moments later Queens could have really put the game to bed when they went close again. Tapping found Dykes and although his shot was blocked, the ball was delivered to the far post where the unmarked Anderson crashed a drive into the side netting.Further chances came and went as Anderson and then Lyle tried their luck.
The impressive wing play of Lyndon Dykes on the left was pleasing and on several occasions only the final ball let him down after he skipped past various Airdrie defenders all of whom had difficulty in containing him, and minutes before the interval another excellent run saw him cut the ball back into the path of Hilson who was unlucky to see his shot blocked away. A low drive from Pickard looked to be goalbound but was blocked, and the youngster was involved in the action seconds later as he became the first Queens player to be booked following a tussle with Iain Russell, who was also cautioned and the half came to its conclusion with Queens thoroughly deserving their two goal advantage.
    HALF-TIME QUEENS 2-0 AIRDRIE
Queens made a change at the break as Jake Pickard was replaced by Kyle Jacobs and the second period had a somewhat sort of stop start begining due to a couple of incidents.Firstly a fan in the Airdrie section was taken unwell - we wish them well and hope all is okay - which caused the referee to call a halt to the game for some minutes, and then when the game re-started Airdrie player Faria took a blow to the head which required him to be substituted. When the game finally settled it was more of the same really with Queens carving out some very decent chances although they will probably feel that they should have scored more.
Dale Hilson broke clear after gaining possession in his own half and after getting in behind the defence his pass across goal looking for Lyle was slightly over hit and although Lyle was able to knock the ball back in for Dykes, there was no power in his shot. Hilson then made way for Aiden Smith, and Steven Rigg made his first home appearance replacing two-goal Derek Lyle.
Both substitutes might have added to the scoreline had they been an inch more accurate with their respective chances that came their way. Firstly Rigg reacted brilliantly to smash a loose bouncing ball against the bar from 10-yards out, and then Smith was extremely unlucky to see his well placed shot come back off the near post after good approach play involving Dykes, and Rigg had created the chance.
As the chances continued Chris Higgins got in on the act. Winning possession deep in his own half he carried the ball forward before releasing Tapping on the left and racing ahead for the return pass. However Tapping elected to goal for goal himself seeing his shot deflected away for what was Queens` first and only corner of the game. The corner was well defended by Airdrie and following a quick break down the left it seemed as though they might snatch a late consolation goal, but having done virtually nothing all game, Robinson showed good reactions to block away a shot at his near post to preserve yet another clean sheet.
Sponsors Betfred gave their man-of-the-match award to Grant Anderson, and the majority of the crowd of 1036 went home still very warm, but also very happy after what was a pretty decent performance from their team. The result means that the top two teams in the group will go head -to-head this coming Saturday and the watching Partick Thistle management team will be aware that Queens have played some good stuff in their opening two Betfred fixtures.

Queen of the South recorded their first Championship victory of the season with a comfortable home win over Ayr United.

Derek Lyle opened the scoring for the hosts with a right-footed strike before Stephen Dobbie doubled the lead just before the break.

The Doonhamers extended their lead further when Lyle found the net for the second time.

The visitors managed to pull one back through Kevin Nisbet before Lyndon Dykes sealed the victory for the hosts.

Two wonderful strikes from Stephen Dobbie guided Queens to a second successive win as they climbed into third place in the Championship table with victory over Falkirk. In a game largely dominated by the visitors - especially in the opening half - two fantastic strikes from Dobbie lit up Palmerston as the striker showed that he has still retained his ability to do something special. Before kick-off Derek Lyle was presented with a momento to mark his 300th appearance for the club, the milestone being reached against Ayr last weekend.
