How is everyone getting on? Anyone made any changes to their day to day activities?

We made the tough decision today to keep the kids off school (10 and 7). Its not something we do lightly. The wife has MS and asthma, so although there are no cases at school we need to protect her as well as possible. I am not convinced that it was the correct decision but safety first I guess. One of my son's friends mum is a nurse af Tameside hospital who had their first victim at weekend. Strange times.

They're letting us go half hour earlier each 12hr shift to avoid others yet there are morning/afternoon shifts

Mrs has had all holidays cancelled by NHS and they could be turning the hospital into a Corona isolation unit with staff confined and eating sleeping at work.

So up to now I've been quite lucky really :D

Joking aside i think a bit flu has been blown way out of proportion by governments and media idiots.

I dont disagree mate. However, a normal cold can send my mrs bedbound for a couple of days. I do worry what a slightly stronger strain of flu will do.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_flu_pandemic

It is estimated that 11–21% of the then global population (of about 6.8 billion), or around 700 million–1.4 billion people, contracted the illness – more in absolute terms than the Spanish flu pandemic,[3][6] with about 150,000–575,000 fatalities.[7] A follow-up study done in September 2010 showed that the 2009 H1N1 flu was no more severe than the yearly seasonal flu.[8]

In Abu Dhabi they have closed all restaurants, there are no concerts, no big sporting events etc. We are currently worried that they might close the golf club..although that hasn't happened yet. That said, my time in the UAE is just about over so I'll have to worry about the situation in the UK in about 2 weeks.

I’m cracking on as normal. albeit with extra awareness and care . My worry is that no matter how well I look after myself, we are still in danger from those who won’t . Too many people who will just not care , be too lazy to wash etc and will believe that they are above having to take notice and act upon advice and instruction

Well it's lockdown time here in Italy as you all know. I've got next to no work which is a worry financially although I have savings.

My routine on a Saturday is to follow the English football in the afternoon (obviously not possible this week) then go out for a walk for an hour and pop into the supermarket. This time I was the only person on the streets. The supermarket had two customers in it, the staff were wearing protective masks & gloves, with one-metre spaces marked on the floor on the way to the check-out. All other shops closed. Hardly any traffic about. A mate in a larger town said it's the same where he is and it's "like something out of a science fiction film".

Why would you use a couple of individual cases to make a whole argument though? It's already been highlighted that between 80-90% of the people who catch it will only experience mild symptoms. So those examples will be the case for most people who catch it.

The problem isn't even really the significantly higher mortality rate (it's between 20 or 30 times more fatal than the flu).

The fact that it is much more contagious than the flu is a big concern - epidemiologists are suggesting that 20% of the world's population catching it at some point is possibly at the lower end of the scenario, with 60% being the higher end. Add that to the fact that there is no cure yet, and any cure could be a year away, means that this is likely to continue for a while. I believe a Japanese woman has now had the disease for a second time which means that there's a chance that you're not immune after infection. The longer it spreads also increases the chances of it mutating and becoming more efficient.

Again, on its own, it's not an end of world scenario. But this has the potential to completely overwhelm our health system which means that people will be more likely to die from all other issues as well as we will struggle to cope with the fallout. Waiting lists will dramatically increase, supplies will diminish, staffing will be an issue.

Governments are very sensibly looking at the bigger picture. It's not about avoiding infection and killing the virus (that's not possible right now), it's about slowing down the rate of infection so that our health service continues to be able to deal with the crisis.

The CDC and WHO both are very clear on the dangers of COVID-19 and it seems to me that it would be irresponsible for people and governments not to follow the advice given by the experts.

My grandson lives with us, a mother of a classmate of his posted on facebook that the her child had Coronvirus....it was also in the Northern Echo (received a fee presumably ). It has not been confirmed.

My wife helps one morning a week with reading in the school, she helped this child on Tuesday.

I have sick 90 year old mother in hospital atm...chatted with the ward and they advised stay away.

The pupil at the school should be tested and I would like our family to be also. Apparently this is not possible?

There's almost 7,000 deaths caused by Covid-19. Are you actually suggesting that they all have other issues nothing to do with it?

I thought children could not get this as their Lungs are still growing and the thing this virus latches onto is not present in children's lungs

But they can be carriers that's why school's are being closed

Here in France it's all very strange.

Weve been shopping this morning and it was like a zombie apocalypse movie ...

... hordes of shuffling masked figures eyeing each other suspiciously.

We stocked up on what we needed for a month. We'd usually shop once a week but we can now avoid all human contact for four weeks. I'm sure some people thought we were panic buying but we think it's quite responsible.

Everything but essential shops are closed including our bank. The pharmacy was operating a 'one out - one in' system so everyone was standing around outside.

I decided that, as Sunderland aren't playing for a while, I wouldn't need any blood pressure tablets <laugh>
