Now Rangers say they have got a replacement....

Rangers say they have replaced Mark Warburton as manager with under-20 coach Graeme Murty ahead of Sunday's Scottish Cup tie with Greenock Morton.

The Scottish Premiership club say they have accepted the resignations of Warburton, assistant David Weir and head of recruitment, Frank McParland.

But Warburton, who took charge at Ibrox in 2015, told BBC Scotland he was unaware of the statement.

And the 54-year-old Englishman is consulting his legal team.

He had taken Rangers' training on Friday as normal ahead of Sunday's fifth-round tie.

Warburton, who took charge at Ibrox in 2015, had earlier in the morning defended McParland's record of signings after media criticism of the Glasgow club's recruitment.

Rangers lie third in the Scottish top flight, but they are a distant 27 points behind city rivals and reigning champions Celtic.

And the club say in their statement that under-20s coach Graeme Murty will take interim charge of the team on Sunday.

"Rangers has accepted the resignations of manager Mark Warburton, assistant manager David Weir and the club's head of recruitment, Frank McParland," said Rangers' statement.

They are more of a basket case than us!!

3rd place for Rangers is unacceptable these days, especially with Celtic unbeaten and walking it. They have only just restructured after going bust, it's a long road back but they obviously haven't learnt their lesson. Perhaps the 'Moneyball' system of recruitment doesn't work in Scotland. Good luck on Sunday Steelmonkey...

He just bought them up and they are third, and not happy. Some right plonkers are allowed to run football clubs aren't they. Don't they realise that over the past few years, as Rangers have worked their way back up through the divisions...Celtic have been pushing forward to be further ahead at the top.

just wonder whether the Joey Barton incident at Glasgow Rangers has had some bearing in all this and has "cost" someone their job

Imagine your employer thought you had resigned and you thought differently? Something is seriously amiss here. I think they want rid of him and have found some excuse to get rid of him on the cheap.

Rumour is Alex McLeish is going back that - what a joke <laugh><laugh><laugh> gonna be some upset teddy-bears tomorrow if Morton turn them over.

Apparently some of the loanees they had, had clauses that they had to be picked if they were fit, and Warburton wasn't happy with that (what decent manager would be?)

Heard a news report suggesting he'd been to meet Forest and was offered job; told Rangers what was happening and they put out the release before contract was issued. Contract didn't come, Warburton said he wasn't resigning and it ended up where it is.

Can't believe he'd look at Forest and their owners, but if true, you never act until the papers are signed and in your hand.

It says a lot about Scottish football that he would trade his job for that basket-case...
